Knox County cop fired immediately after photos show brutal choking of student

Usually, after charges of police brutality, police officials take their time reacting while they follow procedure to determine who did what. But this episode in Knoxville, Tenn., was so extreme and well-documented that the local sheriff fired the officer immediately.

Frank Phillips, a Knox County Sheriff’s officer, was fired Sunday night after a series of pictures taken by photographer John Messner were published in the Daily Mail in Britain. They showed an officer identified by the Sheriff’s Office as Phillips grabbing 21-year-old college student Jarod Dotson around the neck and squeezing him until he fell to his knees.

Yes, why?
It doesn’t justify in any way the behavior of the officer.
So why bring it up?

“...too many incidents where “good cops” have stayed behind the blue wall...”

When cops stop thinking it’s “us versus them” towards people...

.... then maybe people will stop thinking it’s “them” against the rest of “us”.

Some of them seem to forget who they work for.

But for the British press, and pictures, and the fact that the victim had a spotless record, this cop would have continued along his merry way. The cops who were also there and said nothing should also be fired.

Curious to see if anyone else will come forward now, who may have had similar “breath-taking” experiences with this badged clown.

The photo montage is kind of chilling. He’s staring at the kid while he’s choking him out, and appears to be smiling slightly.

Sadistic.

What gets me is that these Nazis will attack someone like this, THEN they add “resisting arrest” to the charge list when the person tries to breathe or exercises some other involuntary action. I cannot stand pigs like this. They are a direct assault on the Constitution, and their contempt for our land deserves our fullest prosecution.

“..began to physically resist officers’ instructions to place his hands behind his back, and at one point grabbed on to an officer’s leg...”

The photo montage shows otherwise.

“..Where I come from we teach our kids if a police officer gives you a command you follow it immediately and without question..”

Do you teach your kids what to do if they’re being choked unconscious by a guy who’s supposed to be “upholding the law”?

Where I come from, choking someone is called “aggravated assault”.

I don’t care if he has a badge or not - you don’t put your hands on my neck. At that point, I’m supposed to rely on your sense of mercy?

Not a chance. That goes into “Life or Death Struggle” in my book.

That kid was helpless to do anything at that point. And if he WAS resisting, there were still THREE large cops on him. He wasn’t going anywhere.

I sometimes feel society would be better off with all citizens armed, and no cops.

Thread winner. I agree completely.

“Brutal choking” as opposed to gentle choking?

“Do you teach your kids what to do if they’re being choked unconscious by a guy who’s supposed to be “upholding the law”?”

Generally speaking we teach our kids to not come into contact with LAW ENFORCEMENT where they are on the wrong side of the law and to not find themselves in a situation where they NEED to be handcuffed. Usually a polite “yes, sir” goes a long way. But we are now considered “old school” for teaching such radical morals, ethics, and how to behave in public.

So it’s okay in your eyes to choke out someone because they came into contact with law enforcement?

“So it’s okay in your eyes to choke out someone because they came into contact with law enforcement?”

No! People come into contact with law enforcement all the time. It’s what one does once the LEO gives the person a command that will determine how the rest of their day is going to go.

Funny, your posts seem to be saying that it is okay to choke this man out despite his compliance with officers.
The young man this fat sadist choked out did not resist.
Your post 25 is erroneous.

” It’s what one does once the LEO gives the person a command that will determine how the rest of their day is going to go.”

The young man was complying with those commands.
Yet he got choked out.
What about that?

“...But we are now considered “old school” for teaching such radical morals, ethics, and how to behave in public....”

Well... I’m old school too. And first off, I want to apologize to you if I came off confrontational with you, because it wasn’t my intent. I was p*ssed off when I wrote it - SO badly PO’d, more than I can say without getting banned. One of my posts already got pulled.

Where I grew up, before my neighborhood turned to crap, we had a beat cop who walked the neighborhood, knew all the families, knew all of us kids by name. The FARTHEST image in my mind’s eye is of that cop choking out a kid.

He was a “Peace Officer”, and it showed.

This sadistic clown is an embarrassment, and a danger to ordinary people. It’s good he’s been removed from the department, and he needs to NEVER be able to wer a badge again.

A badge is not a consent to operate like a savage; it’s a sign that society trusts you to exercise good judgement, proper restraint, and proper caution in dealing with folks. If the guy is SHOOTING at you, by all means, return the fire. But when a person - a drunk KID - is standing in front of you, handcuffed, with two other officers hanging on to him, and you walk up and intentionally put your hands on the kid’s neck... well, that just shows you can’t be trusted with any kind of authority.

Over the last decade or so, something changed with LEOs, and it’s not for the better.

It was from the Washington Post. And they wrote;

“Dotson ignored repeated instructions to go inside, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported. Deputy Brandon Gilliam wrote in the official report that Dotson “began to physically resist officers’ instructions to place his hands behind his back, and at one point grabbed on to an officer’s leg.”

Pictures show otherwise.
He placed his hands behind his back.
There was no need for officer jabba to he way he did.
