As ‘Punishment,’ Los Angeles Clippers Bigot Donald Sterling Could Make $1 Billion
The Daily Beast ^ | 04/28/2014 | Robert Silverman

Posted on 04/28/2014 11:00:46 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The NBA will likely suspend L.A. Clippers owner over his racist remarks and ‘encourage’ him to sell the team—and it’s not inconceivable the sale will earn him a $988 million profit.

It’s only going to get worse for embattled Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. On Sunday afternoon, Deadspin released a longer version of everyone’s least-favorite lecherous, reptilian, slumlord billionaire airing his so-called thoughts on race to his (presumably now former) girlfriend, V. Stiviano.

Feel free to listen to more of this poisonous dreck, if you really need to hear how Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp gets dragged in, some very weird and very wrong ideas about “black Jews,” and, of course, the Holocaust.

Unless the tape in question is somehow proved to be a fabrication of such maliciously doctored skill that it’d make Gennifer Flowers blush, Sterling will receive what has to be the largest fine in National Basketball Association history, be suspended, and then be “encouraged”—à la Marge Schott —to find a nice, non-racist fellow .01 percenter to sell the team to.

But even if the league eventually has this pustulant boil of a man forcibly removed, it’d be perfectly understandable if you were driven to pound nails into the floor with your forehead when you start thinking about the gargantuan pile of ducats that will be his ultimate “punishment.”

I’d do everything I could to convince one “Rush Limbaugh” to buy the Clippers!

Marge Schott made her comments public ally, to a reporter. From what I've heard this guy's statements were made in a private conversation. Or at least he thought it was private.

The Clippers’ value will never get much higher and the hassle just isn’t worth it now. Sterling should sell up and sleep at night on top of a pile of money with many beautiful ladies.

I don’t see what was racist about Sterling’s comments. To the contrary, it sounded to me as if he was tired of his girlfriend using black people as some sort of decoration. It was her actions then that were racist as she was using her ‘black friends’ to make herself look ‘diverse’ when it sounds to me like Sterling knows her better.

On what basis could they fine him? Right, wrong or indifferent, his comments were personal and had nothing to do with his ownership. If he influenced the hiring or firing (within the confines of law), is that not a prerogative of ownership?

What set off Sterling was that pic of his girlfriend with Magic, makes me think there is MUCH more to this story..Magic is known for being a womanizer, maybe he was having an affair with this woman(Who is known for swindling rich men and has multiple aliases) and Sterling was afraid he would get AIDS..ya never know, it is possible..notice how Sterling didnt make a fuss about Matt Kemp being in a photo, it was only Magic in that photo that made him so angry

The speech police is at it again. Private conversations and/or private political donations (Mozilla) are subjected to financial penalties if the speech/donation violates the sensitivities of the politically correct crowd. Of course the NBA has an unblemished record of hiring only model citizens.

Picture similar situations say between the Jets and Giants or whomever or whatever is one’s chosen sport, Redsox and Yankees and so on.

I haven’t heard the tape, but from headlines and comments you’d think this guy was worse than Hitler. He said some derogatory things about blacks and Jews? So what? Was he planning to kill them all? That would be one thing, but not liking them? Again: so what? FTR, I have no idea who this guy is and could not care less for basketball.

I honestly read it as Sterling found her hanging around with athletic young studs known for many sexual conquests as embarrassing and humiliating, punctuating that he’s an old fool with a woman he can’t satisfy and control.

He had no problem with her privately seeing these men, even noting he didn’t care if she had sex with them.

She’s more of a decoration for Sterling, in that context.

Reid is sulking in his office wondering how come he wasn’t involed in deals like this so he could line is pockets with more money. Why does Donald Sterling get to make more money than him, ever though reid is a corrupt crook he never makes money like that and thar’s not fair.

So let me get this straight:

1. A gross, entitled, creepy rich guy got drunk and said crappy/racist things to his entitled, creepy, skank gold-digger “girlfriend.”

2. Creepy, entitled, skanky, gold-digger “girlfriend” taped him, in a creepy, skanky, gold-diggery sort of way in some sort of revenge after he trades her in for a new model.

3. We’re supposed to care?

Sorry, I don’t care. They deserve each other.

Because he is in breach of contract. Pro sports Leagues have rules/obligations you must follow to be permitted to own a team. Essentially, it’s a club with a contract. They can get rid of you in many ways for “conduct detrimental”.

Free Speech etc does not apply as this is not a government action.

I can understand the contract issue but do not see how that falls into the conduct arena. But I suppose it all comes down to what is stipulated in that contract.

That would be amusing: NBA takes punitive action against Sterling, he slams them back with an ADA suit alleging discrimination based on his age and age-related cognative functions ...

He is entitled to “reasonable accomidations” if he is suffering from cognitive impairment, right?

And, thus, my question in post #15.

I'm old enough to remember when Earl Butz, who was a pretty decent Secretary of Agriculture, got ridden out of town on a rail for telling an off-color joke which quoted a turn-of-the-century politician.

Not one empty suit nor empty skirt in the media would print or repeat the joke which was supposed to be so offensive so we could judge for ourselves.

Is this the case here?

She's being sued by Sterling's old(er) lady Rochelle. More info here.

Rochelle and Don Sterling

I found it odd that the name Stiviano is very scarce across these 50 united states. It turns out in 2010 she had her name legally changed to V. Stiviano from Maria Vanessa Perez for the stated reason that she had not "yet been fully accepted because of my race."

As to the tape, she denies releasing it. It's possible a third party knew about their taping their conversations and leaked a particularly good one. It's also possible she is simply lying.

I was 16 or 17 when the Earl Butz thing happened. I knew the "joke" then, and can remember it to this day. Don't know why you didn't find out what he said. If I knew it, everyone did. The print version may have used a lot of *&# letters but it was obvious what he said. It was pretty offensive. Didn't he tell it to someone sitting next to him on a plane? Just dumb.

Do you happen to recall who that turn-of-the-century politician was? I'd always assumed the joke had originated with ole Earl.

Butz also gets credit for another joke, referring to the Pope and reproductive rights: "He no playa the game, he no maka the rules." Cardinal Cooke demanded an apology. "I'ma sorry I speaka dat way."

Never heard it attributed to anyone in particular. Probably just a folk saying.

The ‘No playa da game...’ quote was popularized by Vice President Spiro Agnew.
