I don’t see a downside in any American refusing to transport Chinese goods.

No employers want employees nowadays...

They're viewed as heavy luggage, a liability, too expensive...Make them all independent contractors and just stick your hand out and collect $$. Let them worry about all the insurance, maintenance costs, tires, gas, taxes, health costs etc...

Watch for retailers to start renting out space and cash registers for independent contractors...No joke..

This is a pantload. I work in the logistics business. The truckers are union truckers and upset because the ports want to open up pick-ups and deliveries to non-union lines, which are the fastest growing part of the trucking business.

Cost is only part of the reason that non-union truck lines are eating the unionized truck lines lunch. The other reason is that big shippers like our plant prefer working with non-union lines. Their drivers actually know how to pick up a pallet jack and help load the truck, are familiar with cross-docking and don't expect to be treated like royalty who are doing you a huge favor by showing up to deliver or drop a load.

Do what everyone else is doing, go to independent contractors, and no need to worry about unions, trucks, maintenance, gas, tires, all the insurance, payroll taxes workers comp and on and on... etc, etc, etc...

Nice in theory, but a large number of dockside warehouses are locked into long-term contracts with unions. The longshoreman and unionized trucking lines conspired together to keep out the competition in RICO fashion.

The west coast longshoreman's union are planning another strike after June 30 to enforce their grip on commerce. We've already moved our inbound shipments to the east coast, which is also unionized but nowhere near as thuggish as the west coast.

Sure, I know it’s the Teamsters, but if they stop the flow of cheap Chinese crap that helps to fund the Chinese military then I really don’t care who’s doing it.

It’s kind of like how I’m okay with the Sierra Club protesting Democrat politicians. I don’t really care who does it, I’m content with the result.

“Their drivers actually know how to pick up a pallet jack and help load the truck, are familiar with cross-docking and don’t expect to be treated like royalty who are doing you a huge favor by showing up to deliver or drop a load. “

We have the same problems with our teamsters lazy ass drivers. They won’t even come out of the truck once they dock.

There’s your problem: you count on your enemy to stop your enemy.

I’m not just talking about truckers and the port...I’m taking where all this has been going for years now and that’s independent contractors...

From truckers to taxis, to construction workers, and everything else...They’ll eventually put the longshore unions out of biz...

Private sector unions are dying and have been for years. In fact there are now more unionized government employees, than in *all* of private sector America....

They won’t even come out of the truck once they dock.

Exactly. And it runs both ways-- our warehouse workers only load them when they have nothing else to do.

Old Dominion, ABF and other non-union lines, meanwhile, are in and out of here while those jackwagons are still waiting to get serviced-- and they don't seem to take the hint nor give a damn.

The truckers contend many of the companies wrongly classify drivers as independent contractors rather than employees

Was Obama care mentioned as a factor here. Seems like it..."independent contractors?"

It’s not a problem to me when two of my enemies fight each other.

It’s like watching Hamas fight Hezbollah, I just don’t know who to root for.

No, your problem is when you cheer for one enemy over the other. You might think there’s no “cost” to it, but it is a fabrication of your own mind.

Okay then, I consider the People’s Liberation Army to be a worse enemy than the Teamsters.

You have a good point. The walmart super frieghters are lined up bumper to bumper across the Pacific to Communist China, bring in Chinese products by the millions of tons per day.

All while everyone on the ground here trying to dominate and control the unloading and moving all this foreign crap...

So now the question is, if you consider the PLA to be a worse enemy than the Teamsters, how badly do you wish to punish the Japanese, Taiwanese, Australians, New Zealanders, Singapore(ese), et. al., for it?

I don’t mean to sound like Rick Perry, but please bring your business to Houston’s port. We are growing by leaps and bounds all around Houston. Please bring your business, no state or city income taxes. Please come and grow.
