WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The average age at which U.S. retirees report retiring is 62, the highest Gallup has found since first asking Americans this question in 1991. This age has increased in recent years, while the average age at which non-retired Americans expect to retire, 66, has largely stayed the same. However, this age too has slowly increased from 63 in 2002.

I’m a Realtor and I like what I do. I plan to work well into my 60’s and beyond. I’ve met waaay too many retired guys who are bored stiff and micromanage.
Avoid interest payments, pay cash, live within your means save $1 as if it were $100 the retirement age is 40.
Maybe it's like golf, where you want to be below average???
Below average here, I retired at 54 and have never regretted it.
All of those unionized government employees who retire at 52 bringing down the average.
I bailed at 60. Don’t regret it.
Left the “rat race” at 50. They have begged me and bribed me to come back and cannot pay me enough. Been seven years now and I do not miss it a bit.....
Do not think I will ever retire retire because I enjoy working too much. This work consists of working my land, building stuff for myself and the ranch. Raising pullets for sell to people as laying hens. Put in a greenhouse for better year round vegetables for private and to sell.
Everything is dealt on a cash basis as much as possible.
Leave when we want to.

I see too many "retired" young oldsters who are frankly, quite limited and quite boring...
I retired last month. Not my choice. The company I worked for went out of business. I’ll be 63 in August. I’ll probably find something to do and work a little longer.

Congrats to you. You have built a nice life for yourself in retirement. It’s nice to hear stories such as yours.
Scaling back is one thing. Quitting active life and camping the house is another thing entirely. Retirement is unnatural, IMO, barring enfeeblement of mind and body.
Not another cent of income tax from me other than IRA withdrawals. IRA keeps us going as long as we watch things. We eek that out to minimize the tax hit.
I love it, especially after the last job with a buffoon of a retired navy occifer for a boss that knew nothing of engineering but wanted to "manage" it all regardless.
Could it be that you know a lot of retired guys who have little in the way of imagination and/or like to have someone to tell them what to do all day?
