Health Care Politics In One Sentence
New York Times ^ | April 28, 2014 | by Paul Krugman

Posted on 04/28/2014 2:43:29 PM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

The politics of Obamacare are clearly starting to shift. It’s not that the public is coming to love it — not yet, anyway. But it’s less and less of a bogeyman, with polls suggesting a majority of the public against flat-out repeal. So there’s increasing pressure on Republicans to lay out an alternative — and continuing surprise about their inability to articulate one.

But this is an example of why it sometimes helps, even in straight political reporting, to understand how policy works. Here’s the essential fact about health care policy, which in turn fundamentally shapes health care politics:

Obamacare looks the way it does because it has to.

Republicans can’t offer an alternative because there isn’t one (aside, that is, from single-payer). Their plan, such as it was, was to wait for the plan to implode, so they would never be put on the spot; since that isn’t happening, Plan B is to bob and weave and avoid the question until the midterms. That’s all there is.

Krugman was an arrogant moron decades ago, completely enamored of his dreams about how the world ought to be and divorced from the reality of facts. He hasn’t changed, beyond becoming more arrogant and more divorced from reality.

The alternatives are to repeal Medicare or single-payer.

I don’t think LBJ thought it would take this long for Medicare to destroy the system. But destroyed it is.

He’s also become quite a bit richer.

I thought that was a no-no for dyed in the wool libs.

The hypocrisy is mind boggling.

*sigh* Krugman... how can I put this delicately... you’re an idiot. You’ve always been an idiot. Everyone who has read this article now has a lower IQ.

NYT propaganda. Only the whores in DC claim to like it and they aren’t even subject to it. Every government propaganda machine ought to be scorched.

How about “HSA’s for everyone, tort reform, only a VERY high deductible policy mandatory (like $100K) so people can vote with their wallets unless the insurers offer policies at actuarially sound prices”?

Oh, and don’t forget “Death penalty to anyone disclosing any medical information, including medical financial information, to ANY third party without prior permission (and no exception for the biggest privacy thieves of all, like there is in HIPAA)”?

I seriously doubt the premise that the majority is against repealing it. They probably asked the question in some obtuse manner. Remember, this is Krugman and the NYT talking.

Somebody had better tell Krugman to switch hands or he’s going to get carpal tunnel syndrome.

Of course “Repeal” is off the table.

Besides Ted Cruz, no GOP leader will even mention the word.

The only time “Repeal” comes up is when GOP leaders attack Conservatives for wanting “Repeal.”

Waiting for it to “implode” was another GOP lie.

After claiming that was the GOP strategy for 2014, Boehner and McConnell voted to fully fund ObamaCare for two years.

That funding included bailout money to any insurance company that lost money on ObamaCare for two years.

ObamaCare - Signed, sealed, and delivered by the GOP leadership.

The two are not disconnected, either.

[If you want to have community rating without a death spiral — that is, if you want to keep an acceptable risk pool — you have to have an individual mandate. If you want to have an individual mandate, you have to have subsidies for lower-income Americans. And that’s Obamacare: a three-legged stool, with all three legs essential.]

The leg of the stool representing subsidies—of which most enrollees qualify—is not a leg but a crutch exposing another Obama lie that ACA would be “revenue neutral.” ObamaCare is insolvent and will remain so. That makes it an entitlement. As such it would be simpler to reform and expand Medicaid to cover those who can't afford or are denied insurance. That would be more compassionate. But ObamaCare is not about compassion. It is about creating another monolithic federal bureaucracy employing unionized, card-carrying Democrats.
