The Man Who Would Make Food Obsolete
The Atlantic ^ | April 28, 2014 | Roc Morin

Posted on 04/28/2014 8:06:48 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Rob Rhinehart invented Soylent—a beverage that he claims contains all necessary nutrients—as a food replacement. The first batch is shipping this month.

Rob Rhinehart, inventor of Soylent

I was 6 or 7,” Rob Rhinehart began, “and I guess my mother was serving salad. I was looking down at a plate with these leaves on it. I could look outside and see leaves on the trees, and it just seemed a little weird. It seemed a little primitive - like something an animal would do. On this nice plate, in this nice house, why would I eat this thing that grows on trees? I thought, ‘We can do better.’”

“Better,” for the now 25-year-old Rhinehart, is Soylent, a beige beverage that he claims contains every nutrient the body needs. With tongue firmly in cheek, he named it after the ubiquitous food substitute Soylent Green found in the dystopian science fiction movie of the same name. For 30 days, the software engineer turned kitchen chemist consumed nothing but Soylent and reported his progress on a blog. With the help of an enthusiastic online community, he honed his formula, raised $3 million from investors, and is now bringing his product to the market.

I sat down with Rob at a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles in January to talk about the future of food. He drank black coffee while I sipped Soylent from a chilled metal thermos he had brought.

* * *

This is pretty good. It tastes a bit like unsweetened custard.

What I’ve found is that a lot of people who like the idea, like the taste, and a lot of people who don’t like the idea are repelled by the taste. Because it has so little intrinsic taste, it pretty much comes from your expectation.....

I have often wondered how it would sell if somebody invented people food. Just like dog food except it is for people and caters to their taste.

You buy a 25 pound bag of people food and eat a bowl every day until you get tired and try another brand. I guess an MRE is in a way that but it is not just a single food.

It depends on how well it sits on the shelf. If it can sit there for years, and only need water and oil to use, it would certainly make a great emergency ration.

Having a custard-like taste wouldn’t be so bad in really bad times.

Yeah, but there are other needs besides pure nutrition. There's a certain atavistic satisfaction by loading up on black bean chili, cheap beer, and pickled eggs that have been at the back of the bar for six years, and letting one go in the middle of yer liberal auntie's fund-raiser for the Democrat party...

Here is the one that I do not understand.

How is it that you can get that anti-flea stuff, just put a little schmear on your cat (or dog I guess, but I’ve never had a dog) and for MONTHS the cat is protected from fleas.

Why can’t I get a little schmear of something to keep mosquitoes away? I’d be happy to use it daily, not a problem.

Please, can any explain the science of this to me?

This guy is SO in touch with his body that he is able to tell that taking X(2 or whatever multiple) of a mineral is giving him palpitations and shakes, etc... Then he says he went back to the recommended (govt. recommended) daily amount--which is also not totally scientific and accurate.

I hope this works, but I am not sure.

The flea drops kill any fleas that bite the animal, and also kill any eggs they’ve laid in the coat of the animal. If mosquitoes behaved similarly with humans, I have no doubt you would be able to develop the equivalent of Frontline for humans. But, they don’t behave similarly. You’d still get bitten. The ones that bite you would die of course, but there are plenty more where that one came from. Plus, I have my suspicions regarding flea treatments being carcinogenic over time, having loved and lost many dogs that lived fairly long lives. Cancer in dogs has become a near epidemic over the past decade. It wasn’t that common twenty years ago.

Although I am no longer allowing myself to eat mass quantities of cold breakfast cereal in multiple servings from a Jethro Bowl as I used to, I sure do miss it.

My wife could never understand how I could eat the exact same thing for breakfast day after day until the box ran out, then it was on to something else.

Heh, I guess I am one of those people who needs real routine in the morning. We are so opposite...this is my wife in the morning:

and this is me:

She would put her hands on her hips in the morning and just shake her head in puzzlement, while I shrugged my shoulders and said...I just liked it!

But how does the protection last such a long time from such a small topical dose? It seems almost miraculous to me.

I can’t make any comment re: cancer increase in dogs due to flea treatment. You could be right of course, but I almost wonder if, back in the old day, dogs got cancer and it was just never diagnosed. One thing seems true to me, as a cat person, it seems like dogs need to go to the vet a lot more than cats.

The flea drops are monthly and kill flea larvae much as the heart worm pills do. Dogs are more treatable than cats for a wide variety of maladies, is my impression, particularly cancer. That leads to more trips to the vet, and unlike cats who are very traumatized, have to be caged to get them there and sedated once there, dogs are good sports about it for the most part, they’re agreeable and their physiology is similar enough to humans that oftentimes the same cancer protocols work for them. Well, actually it’s the other way around, many if not most cancer protocols in use today came up through canine veterinary trials before ever being tested on people.

In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find

In the year 3535
Ain’t gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do, and say
Is in the pill you took today

In the year 4545
Ain’t gonna need your teeth, won’t need your eyes
You won’t find a thing chew
Nobody’s gonna look at you

In the year 5555
Your arms are hanging limp at your sides
Your legs got not nothing to do
Some machine is doing that for you

In the year 6565
Ain’t gonna need no husband, won’t need no wife
You’ll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube

In the year 7510
If God’s a-comin’ he ought to make it by then
Maybe he’ll look around himself and say
Guess it’s time for the Judgement day

In the year 8510
God is gonna shake his mighty head
He’ll either say I’m pleased where man has been
Or tear it down and start again

In the year 9595
I’m kinda wondering if man is gonna be alive
He’s taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain’t put back nothing

Now it’s been 10,000 years
Man has cried a billion tears
For what he never knew
Now man’s reign is through
But through the eternal night
The twinkling of starlight
So very far away
Maybe it’s only yesterday

In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find

In the year 3535
Ain’t gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do or say
Is in the pill you took today ....(fading...)

This Q&A is scary.

Q: So, I’m wondering how efficient you can get with all of this. If you’re consuming only essential nutrients and everything is used, it must cut down on bodily waste significantly. How close can you get to zero waste?

A: Well, there will always be something, because waste comes from other places too - dead red blood cells, for example. But if you were as elemental as possible, there would be a very, very small amount, primarily because most of the waste is due to fiber. It’s your gut bacteria. So, if you let those die off, there will be precious little waste. That’s basically what I did by consuming very, very little fiber. And, I felt great. But, when I would try to eat normal food again, it was very, very painful, because I didn’t have the bacteria to digest it. So, that was the trade-off.
