Black California Lawmakers Call For Boycott Of Los Angeles Clippers Games After Sterling Remarks
CBS ^ | 4/29/2013

Black lawmakers at the California state Capitol are calling on fans to boycott Los Angeles Clippers games after alleged recordings emerged of owner Donald Sterling making racist remarks.

Sterling is purported to have told a woman not to bring black people to his games or associate with them.

State Sen. Holly Mitchell, the chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus, denounced the NBA owner’s remarks.

“We’re trying to hurt Mr. Sterling’s pocketbook so that he understands how offensive his comments are,” he said. “Asking somebody to not go to a basketball game is the least we can do when people paid a huge debt with their very lives, in terms of taking a stand against racism.”

The calls come despite a request from Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, acting as an advisor to the NBA Players Association, to wait until the league issues its decision on possible sanctions against Sterling.

“Let’s see if our issues are being addressed based on the information we’ve been able to gather,” he said.

But Mitchell says it’s important to send a message to Sterling now.

“He is exploiting the people,” she said. “Seventy-eight percent of the NBA is comprised of African-American players. A significant—the vast majority of his team is comprised of African-American young men, who he earns money off of their athleticism.”

Other members of the state Legislature’s black caucus blasted the comments attributed to Sterling.

Democratic Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown of San Bernardino calls the incident a reminder of a “pervasive permanence of hatred.” Her comments came on the Assembly floor Monday as she supported a resolution declaring Holocaust Remembrance Week.

Democratic Assemblyman Isadore Hall of Compton says Sterling’s alleged conduct is an “utter embarrassment” to the NBA and to Californians who believed the state had risen above racism.

The NAACP Los Angeles chapter is pulling plans to honor Sterling with a lifetime achievement award.

Donations made by Sterling, who has owned the team since 1981, will be returned, Leon Jenkins, president of the Los Angeles NAACP, said at a news conference Monday. Jenkins would not say how much money was involved.

“There is a personal, economic and social price that Mr. Sterling must pay for his attempt to turn back the clock on race relations,” he said.

Sterling, 80, had been scheduled to receive the honor on May 15 as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the Los Angeles branch of the nation’s oldest civil rights organization.

He had been chosen to receive the award because of his long history of donating to minority charities and giving game tickets to inner city children, Jenkins said. The NAACP has honored Sterling several times in the past.

The Donald T. Sterling Charitable Foundation gave $5,000 to the NAACP’s Los Angeles chapter in 2010, according to tax records, and Sterling was listed as his foundation’s only contributor. There were no records of further NAACP contributions in 2011 or 2012, the latest years for which records were available.

The NBA is expected to announce Tuesday what actions it might take against Sterling.

There has been no official confirmation that it is Sterling on the recording, portions of which were released over the weekend by TMZ and Deadspin.

So are these cowards calling for a similar response to Shaquile Oneal and his pathetic friends for mocking a physically disfigured man just days ago?

I would also add the example of basketball executive Larry Johnson whose recent comment suggests that he doesn't want to be associated with white people when doing business.

“Good idea but a more apples to apples response would be for white lawmakers to call for a boycott of the New Jersey Nets.”

Minor point: I am proud to say the Nets now play in Brooklyn and NJ, for all of its shortcomings, no longer has an NBA team. The usual gaggle of race hustlers tried to bully the Nets into Newark, but the Russian owner would have none of it and moved them to a place with a future.

What super-wealthy public figure sat courtside at NBA games for years, and also said:

1. I seriously wanted to pick up a gun and shoot blacks. The only way to resolve matters is by bloodshed.
2. The Obamas, man, they would lie on a stack of Bibles...I voted for Obama twice, but that’s over with.
3. Justice Antonin Scalia and Gen. Ray Odierno “think like blacks.”

Clippers owner Sterling, you might guess?

No, these comments, and many more like them, were made by the virulent racist Spike Lee, only about whites and “Uncle Toms” whom he despises.

So, on what day this week will the NBA issue a lifetime ban and levy a multimillion dollar fine for this hatemonger?

I would like to see WHITE people boycott all NBA games until the racial parity of team members is equal.

Agree. The Celtics were the last team that could put five Caucasians on the floor at the same time. I’d like to see a series of Fightin’ Whiteys teams in all pro sports. And while we’re on the subject, how does it look to have a bunch of white guys on the Washington Generals play and lose night after night to the Harlem Globetrotters? What kind of black racism is that?

You think these black politicians might want to address other pressing needs such as the high rate of black youth unemployment, black on black crime, and the large number of black children raised without a father. Instead, they have to keep heaping on an already (well-deserved) disgraced individual and add fuel to a simmering racial divide in this nation. Sad to say that race still is a winning issue for the Democratic Party.

Is this the theme for elections this year? 2012 was Trayvon was murdered by a white racist. 2014 is Jews want Apartheid.

I listened to someone on Coast to Coast yesterday. It seemed that the word "boycott" was used. This was seemingly to support common sense and decency. I presume he meant that kind of good old American common sense, which would just laugh off Sterling. Just call him all kinds of fool and let it go at that. I believe we would all be the better for it. Including some of the black citizens, if this had happened.

Now poor old down trodden whitey could wield an incredible power. If only there could be a sort of organized and peaceful boycott. There is absolutely no law against staying home. This is a weapon to be carefully used and pick the right targets.

Well, don't be surprised if Stirling names these "lawmakers" as co-defendents in his anti-trust suit.

Personally.

I would love to have a recorder on at some of the NAACP board meetings. I bet they’d shut their traps after I proved they are every bit as racist as any white man ever has been.

Brilliant.
While for decades now the California legislature's efforts have been destroying businesses with generalized confiscatory and regulatory law --- chasing them out of state (if in fact they are actually able to survive) --- now the lawmakers are ratcheting up, turning their venom on a specific business, advocating a boycott that can do nothing but destroy that business.
Simply put, Sterling should join the exodus and take his company into a state with a friendlier attitude toward job providing businesses.

MAJOR POINT: How soon before Kalifornia needs the rest of the nation to bail them out from their swaggering fiscal incompetence/stupidity?
And who's with me saying "FU-Kali !!!"?
