The end of Sarah Palin: An Obama-era-novelty. As O's tenure ends, so does career of Sarah Barracuda
The Week ^ | April 29, 2014 | Michael Brendan Dougherty

Posted on 04/29/2014 7:20:30 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

After this weekend, it's probably safe to say that Sarah Palin is done. Like Jesse Ventura or Ross Perot, she may show up every once in a while to hurl red meat or use stunt cameos to remind us a little of her awkward charms. But recent events seem to confirm that she is an Obama-era novelty politician — and not much else.

First she gave a speech to the NRA in which she joked that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists, offending people who otherwise make up her base. Next, Robert Costa reported on the ever-smaller crowds that have been greeting Palin in Iowa.

When Palin took the stage at the Hy-Vee Conference Center under a banner that read "Heels On, Gloves Off" on Sunday at an event for Senate candidate Joni Ernst, the ballroom was half-full, with a couple hundred attendees scattered in clumps. [Washington Post]

If the politically engaged seem bored with Obama, they have all but forgotten Sarah Barracuda, the manqué of anti-Obama populism. After years of halting appearances on Fox News, gaffes about Russia, and a parody by Tina Fey that nearly eclipsed the original, it may be hard to remember the whirlwind national introduction to Sarah Palin, which culminated in her galvanic speech to the Republican National Convention in 2008. Sarah Palin wasn't a joke back then — she was a live threat. In a few days, with the help of an ace stylist, an ace speechwriter, and sheer novelty, Sarah Palin almost transformed that election.

It later became a reason to knock Palin's vanity and ambition, but Lisa Kline's work as a stylist gave Palin a frontier glamor — that red leather jacket, the military-cut coats — that put starbursts in commentator's eyes. She was an idealized image of a hockey-mom governor from the endless Alaskan wild. Obama was new, but cool and aloof. Sarah seemed relatable and engaging.

Until the introduction of Sarah Palin, the 2008 election had been almost entirely framed as one of "change" vs. "experience." But speechwriter Matthew Scully must have discerned a kind of frontier populism in her accent, history, and politics, and wrote a convention speech that gave the election a completely different cast.

Here's how CNN summed up the speech:

She slammed Obama for "saying one thing in Scranton and another in San Francisco," argued that he had written two memoirs but never authored a major piece of legislation, and asked what he would do "when those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot," a reference to the stage where Obama gave his acceptance speech last week. [CNN]

My personal favorite line was this: "The American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of 'personal discovery.'" You could almost hear that punch landing.

Palin gave what many in the Republican base had been craving all along. It was no longer McCain's long résumé against Obama's promise of change — it was a more primal election of "us" versus "them." She humblebragged, "I'm not a member of the permanent political establishment.... I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion."

And there on that convention stage we saw a preview of the "summer of rage" over Obama's health-care reform and the Tea Party rebellion of 2010.

For Republicans in 2008, alas, it became apparent that the McGovern presidential coalition had waxed in the past 40 years, while the Nixon coalition had waned. And for Palin, it's basically been all downhill since the convention: Saturday Night Live, a disaster interview with Katie Couric, an election loss, a boring reality television show, a number of her endorsed candidates flaming out, a clash with Roger Ailes, and one too many appearances on Fox News in which she seemed on populist autopilot or totally anodyne.

My theory is that Palin will have trouble finding a niche in the post-Obama world. She was the right minoritarian foil for the White House. The president is a brainy, cool-tempered, wonkish Hawaiian; he is a bit like the man from nowhere. Palin was slashing, heated, and defiantly Alaskan.

As his administration comes up more and more lame, what role will Palin play? Maybe none at all. The Obama-Palin dynamic may go down as a Pacific Ocean holiday from the Clinton-Bush rivalry that is the natural embodiment of our two-party, two-family American political system.

I so want to post on that thread, but Disqus disappeared.

I think he was getting a lot of "feedback" and yanked it.

Reports of her demise are greatly exaggerated. It’s the first rule of propoganda, repeat a lie as often as necessary for it to become accepted as true.

If she was truly as irrelevant as they all say, they wouldn’t keep beating the dead horse.

Dogerty is a lefty stand in.

They wish Palin was "done." They are scared to death of her. So is the RINO led GOP.

Romors of her demise are very much exaggerated.

The facts speak for themselves:

Sarah Palin is the hope of our nation. She is a self made politician, had no silver Republican spoon in her mouth, her shadow never graced the vaunted halls of liberal ivy league academe. That is a HUGE plus.

She has the skills gleaned from her youth, of a frontier woman. She has common sense, reflects the values of our nation of steadfast patriotism, frugality of budgeting, compassion for the unborn, all the positive attributes of a Mother of our nation. She has faced corruption in her own state government and within the Alaskan Republican party and cleaned it up, and supported the defense of a Senate candidate who faced bogus prosecution designed specifically by democrat prosecutors to usurp the will of the electorate.

Sarah scares the left and also the whining RINOS who now call themselves Republicans. Anyone who looks at Sarah Palin as other than a gift of leadership and hope for a traduced nation has got to have moonbat syndrome plus.

You bet the Dems are afraid of Palin, and so are the patriarchs of the Republican party who want to keep bleeding the nation with pork piled bills for their relatives and patronage, while refusing to listen to their own constituents who cry " NO." These RINOS even refuse to secure the nation by enforcing current immigration and illegal alien laws.

The continuous campaign to dis-empower Palin through bogus ethics complaints, baseless negative commentary in the media , much of it of a personal nature, is a horrible exercise in the self destruction of a nation. When Palin is attacked, every ordinary , hard working , patriotic American is attacked. And we should take that attack on each of us as being VERY personal.

Sarah has a PAC, and I support it. If she had enough funding she could go on the attack herself against her crooked critics, and file ethics violations against Democrat attorneys who seek to use our system of justice to achieve political ends that they know they cannot achieve at the ballot box should Palin run her own presidential campaign. She could even hire an Anne Coulter as her manager and loose her on those who make these scurrilous attacks on her.

You bet the Dems are afraid of Palin. She is the bolt and the arrow that will pierce Obama to the heart, and bring the light to a nation now in the dark, suffering under the tyrannical ministrations of a nationalist socialist president and his apparatchik running dogs.

Go the Sarahs PAC and donate. No better action can assure the eventual destruction of Obama and his politics, and Sarah means to do just that. She has no use for he Republican elite, but she will become so powerful that they will have to address her as a genuine candidate for the office of president. She certainly has far more experience and patriotism that the current poseur who now occupies the office.Sarah Palin has the ability to oust Obama, and to undo all the damage he is now doing. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see THAT. Even the most iggied Dem nationalist socialist blivet sees THAT, and piddles in their sordid little cod piece in rabid, reactionary fear.Palin gives them all a serious case of the shakes, because as she lives and breathes, she represents the TRUE America, not the Utopian Socialist disaster which a generation of whackos have sought to ram down the throats of decent Americans.

And the RINOS see Palin's potential too, and stand in her way as ensconced good old boy bullies, but Sarah knows how to handle bullies, and has proven THAT time and again.

Clear the decks for Palin folks. She is on the move, get behind her by contributing to her PAC.

Short of heading to Washington with pitchforks, no more effective action can be taken to oust Obama and his circus of freaks.Donate and allow Palin to become a power house of American truth, light and decency.

*Gov. Palin Facts on Free Republic

*The most popular governor

Governor Sarah Palin’s Accomplishments that garnished her a whopping 92% approval rating:

Energy Independence, Development, and Environmental Stewardship

*Governor Palin’s cornerstone accomplishment is AGIA (Alaska Gasline Inducement Act). During the Palin administration, TransCanada and Exxon formed an alliance to build a natural gas pipeline from Alaska to the Lower 48. Under Governor Palin’s governance, the project was expanded and revised from what previous governors had proposed with an open policy process for the Alaskan people. More progress was made on this effort than in the previous 30 years. This is the largest private sector infrastructure project in North American history and helps put us on the path to energy independence.

*Governor Palin’s administration opened up drilling for oil and natural gas at Pt. Thompson for the first time in decades.

*Governor Palin created the Alaska’s Petroleum Integrity Office to oversee all aspects of energy development and to make sure oilfield equipment was safe to operate and a Climate Change Subcabinet to comprehensively and honestly evaluate climate change.

Fiscal Conservatism

*Governor Palin reduced earmark requests for the state of Alaska by 80% during her administration, requesting only earmarks that would benefit the country as a whole.

* Governor Palin reduced spending in her budget for Fiscal Year 2010 by more than one billion dollars from the previous governor’s Fiscal Year 2007 budget, a 9.5% real reduction in spending. Her FY2010 budget was $10.57 billion compared to Governor Murkowski’s FY2007 budget of nearly $11.7 billion. At the same time, she fulfilled her campaign promise to forward fund education, allowing districts greater flexibility and predictability in their planning.

*Governor Palin opposed much of the “stimulus”, wanting only to accept 55% of the money allocated to Alaska, specifically only dollars dedicated to infrastructure [projects. Although the Alaskan legislature ultimately overturned her veto, she stood firm on her commitment to help Alaska to become more self-sufficient while not adding to not add to the skyrocketing national debt.

* Governor Palin invested $5 billion in state savings.

Walking the Walk on Fiscal Responsibility

*Governor Palin sold the private jet purchased by the previous governor. She state it was an unnecessary financial burden on the state and was unable to land on many of the state’s landing strips.

* To cut costs that would be incurred by continuing to use a personal driver like previous governors, the governor drove herself from Wasilla to her office in Anchorage. She also dismissed the governor’s personal chef stationed in Juneau, Alaska’s capital.

Sarah Palin was Commander of the Alaska National Guard. Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the first line of defense unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. It’s on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units in the United States. As governor of Alaska, Palin was briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism daily.

Governor Palin was the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security’s counterterrorism plans. —From FReeper Fiddlstix

The reason Sarah quit the governorship was twofold. By FReeper OneVike–

First and foremost, Sarah had done everything she said she would do when she ran for office. For what was left, her successor could be just as effective. Second, the left started filling frivolous lawsuits against her, and unlike the other 48 governors, the Attorney General of Alaska does not routinely represent the governor when accusations and complaints are filed against the office holder under the operative ethics statutes. (This means that the governor has to personally pay for her or his own legal defense personally.) Basically she was sued out of office.

It is quite interesting the way her detractors forget how she was the darling of the Democrats before the national media knew who she was. What they conveniently forgot was the way Palin took the Governor’s office away from a fellow Republican and tough SOB, named Frank Murkowski. Yes, the father of Lisa (It’s my seat, mine, mine, mine) Murkowski. Back then the media and the left loved her because she tore into the corrupt good old boy’s, “Country Club” Republicans, and sent them packing. Many of them are now residing in State housing and wearing orange jump suits. Back then the Democrats reacted by skipping around the yard, throwing confetti and singing, “la la la la” (well, you know how they are). Name another governor in this country that has ever done anything similar to taking on their own party.

Now with the corrupt good old boys death grip on the state broken, there were fewer Alaskan politicians to protect the huge, giant oil companies. So Sarah constructed and enacted a new system of splitting the oil profits called “ACES” (Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share). Exxon, the biggest corporation in the world, protested and Sarah told them, “don’t let the door hit you in the derriere on your way out.” They stayed, and Alaska residents went from being merely wealthy to being filthy rich. Of course, the other huge international oil companies meekly fell in line. Again, give me the name of any other governor in the country that has done anything similar.

Another thing the Grizzly did when she walked into the governor’s office was she got the list of State requests for federal funding for pork-barrel projects. She went through the list, took 85% of them and placed them in the “when-hell-freezes-over” stack. She let locals know that if we need something built, we’ll pay for it ourselves. Maybe she figured she could use the money she got from selling the previous governor’s jet because it was extravagant. She even suggested that the money saved from the “Bridge to Nowhere” be given to Minnesota to help pay for the I-35 bridge that collapsed. Minnesota to help pay for the I-35 bridge that collapsed. Then there was the money she saved the tax payers by dismissing the governor’s cook, giving back the State vehicle issued to her, and dismissing her State provided security force. After all she was packing heat, but no one knew at the time, so I doubt that any attack on her would have been successful. Could someone please give me a list of governors who have offered money allocated for their state to another?

Now, even with her much-ridiculed “gosh and golly” mannerism, she also managed to put together a totally new approach to getting a natural gas pipeline built which will be the biggest private construction project in the history of North America. No one else could do it although they tried. If that doesn’t impress you, then you’re trying too hard to be unimpressed while watching her do things like this while baking up a batch of brownies with her other hand.

For 30 years, Exxon held a lease to do exploratory drilling at a place called Point Thompson. They made excuses the entire time why they couldn’t start drilling. In truth they were holding it like an investment. No governor for 30 years could make them get started. Then, she told them she was revoking their lease and kicking them out. They protested and threatened court action. She shrugged and reminded them that she knew the way to the court house. Alaska won again.

We have all heard how Obama wants the nation to be on 25% renewable resources for electricity by 2025. However, when was the last time you heard from the MSM that Sarah Palin went to the Alaskan legislature and submitted a plan for Alaska to be at 50% renewable energy by 2025. As of today, Alaska is already at 25%. I’m still waiting to hear from those who support the mainstream politicians on both sides of the aisle, about the list of names they have of other governors who can match what Sarah accomplished in just two and a half years as governor of Alaska.

PALIN MOCKED IN 2008 FOR WARNING PUTIN MAY INVADE UKRAINE IF OBAMA ELECTED Breitbart ^ | Feb 28, 2014 | By Tony Lee

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin warned that if Senator Barack Obama were elected president, his "indecision" and "moral equivalence" may encourage Russia's Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine.

Palin said then:

"After the Russian Army invaded the nation of Georgia, Senator Obama's reaction was one of indecision and moral equivalence, the kind of response that would only encourage Russia's Putin to invade Ukraine next."

Would you trust the supposed conservatives that spout the crap they do you have your back? Would you trust them?

Seriously. Imagine you had to pick the average PDSer at random knowing what they say here and elsewhere. would you trust that person around your kids? Would you trust that person to go to bat for you when poop got real?

Thats why I think she didn’t and likely won’t run...though I deeply wish she would. But having just been a participant in the PDS wars, I cannot imagine being the actual target of my own supposed base with the crap that comes off their keyboards. And I would tell them to go to hell.

There is no one on the conservative horizon that sends bladder emptying spasms of utter horror through liberal ranks like Sarah Palin. If they could burn her at the stake, they’d do it tomorrow like black plague inquisitors. I want to see a zillion 4” stencil graffitis of her face on every unguarded surface in America. Stencils are real easy and fun to make. Any conservative who can make a rag quilt or fashion a walnut monte carlo stock can do it.
