Sheriff’s Office: Winston Issued Citation For Shoplifting $32 Worth Of Crab Legs

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBS Tampa/AP) — Florida State’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston has been suspended from the university’s baseball team after being issued a citation for stealing crab legs.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that Winston was caught shoplifting at a Tallahassee Publix Monday night and was issued a citation.

Major Michael Wood said during a press conference that Winston told authorities that he just forgot to pay the $32 for the crab legs and other seafood items.

“Jameis Winston has not been arrested for any crime. He was issued a civil citation,” Wood said.

Wood added that Winston was very cooperative with authorities.

Winston must complete the pre-diversion program or he will be facing a petty theft charge. He also must complete 20 hours of community service.

“I am confident he will complete his community service obligation and the situation will be resolved soon,” FSU baseball coach Mike Martin said in a statement to Baseball America.

Football coach Jimbo Fisher says he supports Martin’s decision.

The 20-year-old Winston was investigated last year when a fellow Florida State student reported that he raped her. But prosecutors said there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him. The Associated Press reports Winston was among a group of players questioned about their involvement in a BB gun battle and Tallahassee Burger King employees complained Winston was among players stealing soft drinks and making a mess in the store.

Winston’s reported citation comes as the NCAA approved to expand meal allowances for all athletes.

Division I schools are now allowed to provide unlimited meals and snacks to all athletes, including walk-ons.

The move came after Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier complained during the Final Four that he sometimes went to bed “starving” because he couldn’t afford food.

Schools were previously allowed to provide three meals per day or a stipend for those meals to scholarship athletes. The new rule now allows walk-ons to receive the same allowances and allows schools to provide more meals and snacks, too.

Winston is a relief pitcher for the Seminoles and recently earned his first win of the season.

When I was a teenager, I would put the bacon strip on a hook, tightly wrapped, and use a rod and reel to catch blue crabs. They seem to grab on to the bacon and tenaciously hold on until you reel it in where you can scoop them up with a net.....................

If only he were paid . . .

Do they not serve steak and crab to athletes at FSU???

What is the cost for out of state tuition at FSU?

If a 19 year old named Tray went into Publix and shoplifted some pricey shellfish and the cops looked at his record and saw that Tray had some previous acquaintance with police, would Tray be issued a citation and given community service? Just curious.

Here’s where I got my ‘name’:

I work for a company that makes ‘stuff’ for the NSA in DC.
In the mid 90’s I had to go there to do an installation.
Since I was a contractor and not a government schlub, I had to wear a ‘red badge’ everywhere I went and had to be accompanied at ALL times by an assigned agent, even to the toilet.
Whenever I had to go thru a classified area, the agent would stop me at the door, flip on a switch that turned on a red rotating beacon like on a cop car, and announce in a very loud voice: RED BADGER IN THE AREA! Three times. Then everyone in the room had to turn off their computer monitors or cover them with paper so I could pass thru............

Blue Crabs make sense then.

Now I understand why my dog (a "village dog" from the Eastern Shore - part Chessie) is genetically predisposed to be attracted to raw bacon...

I live up the street from a Publix.
I wonder if they’d let me off with a ‘citation’ if I went in there and forgot to pay for a bunch of crab legs?............

So, do you subscribe to the LSM "red" being applied to Americans and (true) "blue" to 'rats?

I still refuse to buy into that labeled division.
