Oprah Winfrey interested in Clippers bid: WSJ
Market Watch ^ | 04/30/2014

Posted on 04/30/2014 1:01:51 PM PDT by AngelesCrestHighway

Oprah Winfrey is joining with entertainment mogul David Geffen and Oracle Corp. chief executive Larry Ellison in hopes of buying the National Basketball Association’s Los Angeles Clippers. The future ownership of the Clippers is in question after team owner Donald Sterling was banned for life from the league on Tuesday by NBA commissioner Adam Silver. The ban was in response to a recording of racist comments that the league said were made by Mr. Sterling, who acknowledged it was his voice on the tape, according to Mr. Silver.

I actually hope she buys it for several hundred million dollars and then demands that the lesbian amazons of the WNBA be allowed to play.

If I were Sterling, I would just give ownership to my son and shoot the middle finger at Magic, Oprah and the rest of the racist gotcha crowd.

It’s possible, but I suspect this is more Oprah Winfrey grandstanding. She’d have to scrape together... what?... like a billion? That’s not chump-change even for somebody as wealthy as her thigh-ness. That would take a financial re-organization of her assets that would take months, or even a year, before she could execute the purchase.

Maybe Sterling or the NBA would agree in principle to a sale within a year. That’s possible... But near-term? No way.

If 20 owners agree the NBA can strip Sterling of his ownership and run the Clippers until they sell them. I assume Sterling would then get the money but you never know. In any case they're not going to let the Clippers go at fire-sale prices because that would drag the value of their franchises down. They'll sell them at fair market value and there will be any number of people willing to buy the team.

Closer to half that, and she's worth close to $3 billion alone. If she and Geffen and Ellison are working together they could buy the whole NBA.

Magic wants the Clippers.
Kareem wants the Clippers.
Jordan wants the clippers.

And I think the guy that runs the evil racist Clippers organization also wants the Clippers.

One's dead and I don't think he's close to the remaining two. His estranged wife has talked about taking over the reins but I thing Silver want's the whole Sterling family out of the NBA so I think he's willing to do the nuclear option and push to have his ownership stripped. Silver's only been in the job a few months and he needs to take a stand early on if he's going to have any control over the owners.

The circumstances, the hatred, invasion of privacy, the blow up to way above what Kerry did, above JPII’s canonization, and the results, the wait out to drive down the price.

Why we ascribe virtue to these media moguls is a mystery

In Memphis or Minneapolis maybe. But not LA. Too much money and too many people willing to pay to be a sports mogul there. The Clippers are worth upwards of $600 million. If they where the Columbus Clippers or the Kansas City Clippers with the same record they'd be worth half that.

If Sterling transfers ownership to his wife or surviving kids, the NBA can’t do squat. He wouldn’t technically be the owner anymore and thus couldn’t have his ownership stripped.

It seems there is one person we forgot that may make a bid for the Clippers: Henry Samueli, the owner of the Anaheim Ducks and a very rich man himself. He could easily buy the Clippers from Donald Sterling for US$700 million and move the team just “down the road” to the Honda Center in Anaheim, which is the home arena of the Anaheim Ducks and easily configurable for NBA games.

Maybe the Obama administration can come in and takeover the Clippers in order to “save jobs”. The administration can purchase them with taxpayer dollars and then later sell it at a loss after hiring players based solely on their offcourt behavior.

They might be able to ban sterling, but they can’t ban everyone related to him. Guilt by association would never in a million years stand up in court.

Under the league rules the NBA has to approve the sale or transfer of a team to a new owner. Since transferring ownership to Sterling's wife or to his kids would be an obvious ploy to sidestep the league's sanctioning of him then there is no way the owners would allow it and no way a court would overrule them.
