Russia to revive May Day workers parade on Red Square
AFP ^ | April 30, 2014

Russian workers will parade on Red Square on May 1 for the first time since 1991, organisers said on Tuesday, the latest Soviet tradition to be revived as a wave of patriotism sweeps the country.

"Crimea has returned to Russia and the trade unions are returning to the Red Square!" said Sergei Chernov, president of Moscow's trade union federation told a news conference.

International Workers Day, or May Day, was a key date in the Soviet calendar, instituted after the Bolshevik Revolution.

The celebrations became increasingly elaborate in the later years of the USSR, with party bosses presiding over ranks of marching athletes, soldiers, farm labourers and factory workers from the Lenin Mausoleum on Red Square, awash with red flags.

In recent years, May 1 demonstrations have been relegated to a Moscow highway.

The decision to revive the demonstration on the iconic Red Square next to the Kremlin is the latest attempt to reinvigorate Soviet-style patriotism.

"This year the demonstration will also be anti-fascist, given the situation near our borders," said organiser Alexander Shershukov, president of the Union of Labour political party, repeating a common trope in the Russian media that neighbouring Ukraine has been taken over by "fascists".

Last year President Vladimir Putin used the holiday to revive a Soviet "Hero of Labour" medal that was handed out to especially productive workers by Stalin.

Organisers said they have invited Putin to attend the Red Square demonstration but have not yet received a response.

Blame Obama. Putin is a populist and all these tantrums from US government about Ukraine are weakening pro-Western fractions of Russian elites. So their government is shifting left to cut Communist agitation inside the country.

The Krauts have their torch lit parades and the Rooskies their mobile missile launcher drive bys.

Old world culture is so quaint.

“Above all, we should acknowledge that the collapse of the Soviet Union was a major geopolitical disaster of the Century. As for the Russian nation, it became a genuine drama. Tens of millions of our co-citizens and compatriots found themselves outside Russian territory. Moreover, the epidemic of disintegration infected Russia itself” (Vladimir Putin, Annual Address to the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, April 25, 2005).

"What should we do to fix all of the above?"

That would be best answered by two somewhat long replies that I wrote to someone else in this thread. In sum, I said that we should work more for ourselves (avoid unnecessary personal spending) and get ready to fight (survive against foreign buildups and aggressions). If that synopsis doesn't make enough sense, the commentary behind the link should.

By the way, on fixing things... In politics, social and business discussions, there have been demands and laws for fixing things—for example, “stop domestic violence.” Have the laws (for examples, the anti-Second-Amendment Lautenberg Amendment to the VAWA and the breaking of millions of families) stopped domestic violence? Have we stopped deaths from drunken driving?

Have we successfully used the anti-property rights laws and regulations of respected, false-alleging NIMBYs to stop clean, sober, G-d-fearing trash like myself from continuing to breathe? But those efforts have succeeded in delaying the efforts of many of us to rise to compete—the real intent behind such bipartisan laws and policies.

Unlike my hard working superiors, I can fix many different kinds of machines, buildings, situations that need a tech. design for correcting. etc. But sometimes, we can’t fix a situation involving the corrupt folks of the world. We can only try, and hope that G-d will fix it soon.

Members of Russia's Communist party carry banners and flags, including the
flag of the self-declared "People's Republic of Donetsk" (C), during a May Day
rally in Moscow May 1, 2014.

Participants wave communist flags near a statue of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin during an
International Worker's Day, or Labour Day, parade in Donetsk, east Ukraine May 1, 2014.
