Type 2 diabetes could cause the brain to age by up to two years every decade a person has the disease, researchers have claimed.
It is the first time diabetes has been linked to a change in the size of the brain.
The study also found that, contrary to common clinical belief, diabetes may not be directly associated with small vessel ischemic disease, where the brain does not receive enough oxygenated blood.
'We found that patients having more severe diabetes had less brain tissue, suggesting brain atrophy,' said lead author R. Nick Bryan, M.D., Ph.D., professor of radiology at the Perleman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
'They did not seem to have more vascular disease due to the direct effect of diabetes.'
According the American Diabetes Association (ADA), nearly 26 million people in the United States have diabetes, and 1.9 million more are diagnosed with the disease each year.
Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes.
In type 2 diabetes, either the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin that is produced.
The ADA estimates that, based on current trends, as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes in the year 2050...

Coconut oil is supposed to provide the nutrients to fight brain aging.
Let me look into that. Any suggestions on types and brands?
The only recommendation I can make is to make sure it’s real coconut oil.

I looked for coconut oil at the grocery Monday, expecting something like olive oil, and what I found was something looking more like white lithium grease...
How can they call that “oil”?
Hmmm...Most brains age tens years every decade, but brains afflicted by this only age two years ever decade??
BTW, I think my brain shrinks when I watch TV.
That’s not the only thing that shrinks, but I can’t remember what the other thing that shrinks is.

Really? Even if sugar levels are kept in check?
There are different ways of processing that affect the end product but it has been too long since I did my research. I have found a brand we like so that’s what we buy.
I guess once you get diabetes - you are saddled with some of its consequences despite watching one’s sugar level.

I’ve had type II for the longest time, and I’ve never noticed any... uh... oh, what was I gonna say...?
When it gets warmer, it becomes a clear liquid. It just happens to have a higher solid temperature than olive oil.

Here’s a tip- stop eating all the sugar, and diabetes goes away.
Not a bad trade off - brain only ages 2 years in a decade.
I knew a woman who had Type 2 for many years, lived to age 90, and was sharp as a tack. Nobody told her that her brain shrunk.
Sounds like a good deal to me! My back feels like it ages for 20 years every decade.
