Obesity is Inflammatory Disease, Rat Study Shows

Scientists led by Dr David Fairlie from the University of Queensland, Australia, have found abnormal amounts of an inflammatory protein called PAR2 in the fat tissues of overweight and obese rats and humans. PAR2 is also increased on the surfaces of human immune cells by common fatty acids in the diet. When obese rats on a diet high in sugar and fat were given a new oral drug that binds to PAR2, the inflammation-causing properties of this protein were blocked, as were other effects of the high-fat and high-sugar diet, including obesity itself.

“This important new finding links obesity and high fat, high sugar diets with changes in immune cells and inflammatory status, highlighting an emerging realization that obesity is an inflammatory disease,” Dr Fairlie said.

“Drugs designed to block certain inflammatory proteins, as in this report, may be able to prevent and treat obesity, which in turn is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, limb amputation, and cancers.”

To make the discovery, the team discovered the first potent, selective and orally bioavailable small molecule antagonists of PAR2 and characterized their functional responses in inflammatory cellular and animal models.

They found that PAR2 expression is increased in vivo in adipose tissue from obese humans and rats, stimulated in vitro in human macrophages by the dietary fatty acid palmitic acid, and inhibited in vivo and in vitro by a PAR2 antagonist. This...

Inflammation is part of the immune system. PAR2 is quite different from ppar gamma, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) γ.

Obesity is Inflammatory Disease, Rat Study Shows...

So, watch out... Christie could burst into flames at any moment?

..highlighting an emerging realization that obesity is an inflammatory disease…

And such a cruelly capricious one too, as it only seems to randomly strike overeaters!

I've read the title three times now, I keep substituting Obama for Obesity at first glance. Subconscious mind I guess.

And all this time I thought it was chocolate cake and cheeseburgers that “inflamed” my midsection.

Oh, for Pete's sake.

Obesity is the result of eating foods that spike blood sugar levels: wheat, sugar, and starches are the primary culprits.

Cut those out of your diet and you'll be skinny as a rail. No expensive research needed.

Rather than trying to block the inflammatory biochemical process, why not try to avoid the inflammatory triggers?

Like cutting back on processed carbohydrates and the industrial seed oils and eating more actual food?

In my experience, PAR2 was a handy method of checking the integrity of archive files :)

They know what it is. They know what it does. They know its benefits. So I’m only half-joking when I say why not issue it as a drug straight away?

When obese rats on a diet high in sugar and fat

No idea why they would use a diet high in both sugar and fat simultaneously. Some believe that each is the cause of obesity, though the newest evidence clearly indicates that high sugar and other rich carbos are the cause of obesity.

Many fats are good for us.

100% true. Every word a winner. Insulin spikes tell the body to store fat and create cravings for more sugar and starches. It is not complex.
