Yes, Donald Sterling Sees His Basketball Team as a Plantation (The NBA's Plantation Problem)
Slate ^ | 04/29/2014 | By Josh Levin

--snip-- Bring out the word plantation in the context of sports, and you’re guaranteed to make a lot of people very angry. When Bryant Gumbel described former NBA Commissioner David Stern as a “modern plantation overseer,” Silver, the current commissioner, described those comments as “outrageous.” In 2011 Jeffrey Kessler, an attorney for the players during the league’s contentious labor negotiations, said the NBA was treating players like “plantation workers.” In response, Stern described Kessler as “the single most divisive force in our negotiations,” adding that his “conduct is routinely despicable.”

It looks like ALL the NBA owners should be forced to sell. Can the NFL be much different? /S

I can just imagine Silver’s attorney having a field day with all the other owners and the NAACP.

This is all so ridiculous. I don’t care if these owners get called “plantation masters” and I don’t care if Sterling asks his African American girlfriend not to bring African American men to his games. It is all hysteria.

I was realizing tonight - this guy didn't get where he is while being dumb or being a wimp. He has access to the best private investigators and the best attorneys. and he probably enjoys a knock down drag out skirmish.

If I were another owner and had a skeleton in my closet I'd be worried. If I were the skanky gal who publicized the calls I'd be very worried and if I was working with someone who wanted to buy his team I'd be buying life insurance.

Just another nitwit leftist scribbler trying to get in good with his fellow leftists and all the “poor and oppressed.” Say, I know how these poor and oppressed players can rid themselves of their shackles. They could go play in Europe and make decent money. But then the owners might still be evil, racist white people. Here’s a better idea...they can quit. Get jobs outside of sports. Yes, that would be much better. Make a lot of money with their non-athletic skills. (snicker)

He knows where the bodies are buried.. The first witness would be Al Sharpton. He needs to explain why he no objections about being honored the same night as Silver.

"all so ridiculous"

Just imagine Sterling was an old, black owner and you were a white player. Then Sterling's girl friend records him saying he doesn't want her to take young white studs to the games thereby showing him up. You're paid 10+ million dolllars a year. Are you going to be upset? I doubt I would.

I call BS. A plantation owner would demand a higher rate of return from his spread than Don Sterling has demanded from the Clips.

Plus in your example his girlfriend would be white too. So who cares.

I’m sorry but every racial comment is not the end of the world. It’s just that our media and politicians are such cowards.

Himmler didn’t get where he did by being dumb or a wimp, either.

Silver came off as a “Sports Uber Furher”. How can he ban a man from attending an open/public sporting event? Only a dictator has this power.

Sterling certainly is not a “sterling” person when it comes to racial tolerance, but he cannot be “banished” by some “sports czar” unless he’s an Obama “czar” (i.e. marxist ideologue).

Even schmucks have constitutional rights, except in the New World of “Obama, Holder and Silver”.

If they can do this to a billionaire, just image what they can do to you. (Ever hear of the IRS?, AFT? DEA? DHS?)

This entire mix of people and events has some bazarre elements. Note this from Sterling’s wife.

*******

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/04/29/some-key-facts-about-v-stiviano-woman-at-center-donald-sterling-scandal/

LEGAL TROUBLES

In March, Sterling’s wife, Rochelle, sued Stiviano, claiming she had received
more than $2.5 million in lavish gifts from the Clippers owner and they needed to be
returned. A big piece of the suit involves a duplex Stiviano purchased in December
for nearly $1.8 million with money that Rochelle Sterling claims Stiviano received
from her husband........

...... Stiviano has received a Ferrari, two Bentleys and a Range Rover from the Clippers’
owner, the lawsuit alleges. The vehicles are worth more than $500,000 according to the suit.

end snips

Yes it’s hysteria. But that’s the world we live in.

Say or do the wrong thing in relation to an officially recognized grievance group, such as blacks or homosexuals, and your life is targeted for destruction.

Examples — Paula Deen, the Duke lacrosse team, the guy from Moxila (sp?) who donated to Proposition 8 in California, the girl from the Miss USA pageant who had the audacity to say she believed marriage was a man and a woman, the guy from Chick Fill A who also said he believes in traditional marriage.

It can be just an offhand remark, or a statement in answer to a question, during an interview, or recorded conversations. It doesn’t matter. The politically correct crowd has such a stranglehold on this country, that you won’t just be engaged to debate your opinions. Instead you will be castigated for having the “WRONG” views of an issue, and because the politically correct crowd, aided and abetted by the media, decide what is “RIGHT” and what is “WRONG”, you are judged by them.

And such judgement is not limited to expressing disapproval of you. Instead, efforts are made to destroy you personally, and destroy whatever line of work or business you are in.

We’re in Orwell 1984 territory, folks.

Yes and I’m not picking Sterling as my poster child but in general people have got to fight back. All this is leading down a very bad road, and it is NOT a road free of racism. The left is basing everything on race, color blind as a goal is gone, and this can only lead to terrible hate and trouble.

Well said, I agree with you.

I can’t defend what Sterling said, as I disagree with it. But I think the reaction was way over the top. Being suspended for life, and then being compelled to sell the team, seems to me like a death penalty for a minor transgression.

I also can’t believe the rush to judgement here. This story hit the internet early Saturday morning. By Tuesday afternoon, the commissioner had made his decision. He took only three days to evaulate a complicated situation.

Why is it complicated? It’s clear what Sterling said, but there are other issues nobody is talking about. Such as, who is this girl, why was she taping conversations, were those tapes made legally? Who leaked them to TMZ, as the girl said she didn’t leak them. So, who else knew about the tapes, and who stood to benefit from all of this being made public?

Did the commissioner really evaluate all of the legal liability issues with the NBA attorneys before he issued his judgement? I find it hard to believe that he did, in such a short time.

It’s all about perceptions and political correctness anymore. This is modern day witch hunt time.

What’s with the left and this plantation business?

Hillary Clinton once said that Republicans ran the House of Representatives “like a plantation”, and “you know what I’m talkin’ bout” to a largely black audience.

Can’t the left come up with some new metaphors????

And don’t forget about the music business.

Friend of mine “discovered” an R&B group years ago, and took them to Europe to sort of get them started and more importantly, teach them how to behave in hotels and restaurants and the venues they would play. Nursery schools stuff, like always flush, this is what a knife fork and spoon are for, plus how not to go after every woman in sight….They had one song hit #1 and it went downhill from there. Unmanageable. Too bad, because they did have talent.

YOu’ll notice I didn’t mention race.
