Putin calls for Ukraine's troops to withdraw from eastern and southern regions

DONETSK, Ukraine – Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that Ukraine should withdraw its military units from the eastern and southern regions of the country, where anti-government insurgents are seizing buildings, but hours later, Ukraine's acting president ordered the military draft be renewed as the unrest intensifies.

Although Ukraine last year announced plans to end military conscription and transfer to an all-volunteer force, Oleksandr Turchynov said in his order that the draft must be renewed in light of "threats of encroachment on Ukraine's territorial integrity and interference by Russia in the internal affairs of Ukraine."

Moscow has consistently denounced Ukrainian security forces' largely ineffectual "anti-terrorist" operation against the eastern insurgents and warned they shouldn't commit violence against civilians. In a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Putin said the removal of military units from the south and east was the "main thing," but it was unclear if that could be construed as an outright demand.

This is it, the moment Bubba in prison says "bend over and pick up the soap" either you knock him out or you are his special lady from now on. Putin is not even going to give Ukraine the dignity of a war, like Crimea he is just going to walk in and tell them to get lost. Looks like he is gonna grab a third of Ukraine without firing a shot.

My heart goes out to the Ukrainians, they wanted freedom and payed dearly for it. That said, the weaknesses of the new government are obvious. The police in the East are underpaid, corrupt, and perfectly willing to cross over to the enemy when going gets tough. The military seems to be in shambles, with whole columns stopped by unarmed mobs and forced to surrender their arms, or outright turning cloaks and joining the separatists. When Crimea was taken with barely a shot, that was a bad sign.

On top of this there is definitely atleast a large minority in the East (and South?) that welcomes and participates in the Russian led rebellion. I guess they are nostalgic for the Soviet Union.

I hate to say it, but it look like the bad guys are winning. I do not see any outs short of a NATO invasion, and that is simply not going to happen.

You seem unhappy the Ukrainian police/military is reluctant to open fire on their own people.

They will have to bring the war to the Russians somehow. Putin launched a civil war in the Ukraine, but he probably is only counting on Ukranians dying. He would probably be very surprised is he finds Russia, or his own position, at risk.

I think this rebellion is not a civilian protest, it is a special operation by a foreign army. Polls show that the East is at best split about relations with Russia, a majority opposes splitting Ukraine, and a large majority don’t want to be annexed by Russia. This insurrection would not be happening without Russian instigation, and the constant threat of Russian tanks streaming across border.

There is a very good chance that this could spiral out of control very rapidly. On the other hand, Putin could withdraw and look quite the statesman.

The best example of I’ve seen recently of this kind of thinking was an interview with a “journalist”, I forget what network — one journalist interviewing another “journalist” — and the interviewee was an American woman of Russian descent working for some US news network, speaking clear and perfect English but spewing pro-Putin propaganda word-for-word in a sickening display of mock-objectivity.

Putin has been peddling and disinformation for years now and his reach is deep into western media now. These staged photos of him shirtless are a great example.

He has set up an entire Internet smear / propaganda network that the Brit papers have written about while...

The US media spends it days working with Pres Jarret spinning alternative fantasy world they create for the Muslim Puppet while Putin marches into Europe .

Scary world.

I’m not ‘peddling’ anything doofus, except ‘restraint’ in the face of a massive US government propaganda campaign.

The bearded Russian special op photos published in the NYT turned out to be a hoax didn’t they?

If you have evidence the insurrection in eastern Ukraine isn’t being run domestically present it.

A translation of a comment I thought was insightful, from an Eastern Ukrainian. I got this from a very popular Ukrainian forum. (Donbass is the far eastern region of Ukraine)

I'm from the Donbass.

Let's be honest. Not Russia took Crimea, and Russia went to Crimea. You shall not covet this Crimeans themselves, hell would that Russia failed. I sincerely regret that I left the Crimea. But I completely understand Crimean why they did so.

Be different, be a Russian conquest, now would be to the east and Ukrainian troops introduced not really thinking. But why it is not in a hurry. And because in the east in the same Donbass completely different situation than in the Crimea.

In the east, strong pro-Russian sentiment, but it is more reluctance to war with Russia, on the contrary to be friends. Just be friends without going to Russia, while remaining a part of Ukraine. But while remaining part of the segregated. And the reasons for this are many. Fundamental differences from western Ukraine: language, religion, revered (and nepochitaemye) heroes, look at the history and relations with neighbors. Well, all this plus the constant accusations that the east all of a subsidized. Edakii dependent All Ukraine. Well duck flag in our hands. Enough to feed us, we will stew in their own juice and survive on their own.

West calls us constantly anyone: scoops miserable, morons, idiots, etc. According to them in the east live exclusively blunt hardworking proletarians, the fate of which stick to the hosts. Great - the inheritance of western Ukraine. East in your opinion - a kind place for lepers.

Even now, when the country was on the verge of collapse when people are broke and have adopted the methods of the maidan, the authorities are trying to pacify the old ways. And you support.

Your decision now - order east lay down their arms and settle down, threatening the use of force. Rather than negotiate and find a way that will save Ukraine. Keep up the good work, and tomorrow those who now only for federalization, very likely will be replaced by more radical views. God forbid that happen.

IMHO

“You seem unhappy the Ukrainian police/military is reluctant to open fire on their own people. “

You seem to be happy that a country is being overrun and systematically disintegrated. Why is that?

Yes, very scary world. Especially since so many Americans are totally oblivious to what’s out there (and coming here). They live their comfortable lives in their comfortable neighborhoods working their comfortable jobs... totally oblivious to the fact that it can (and might) all come crashing to an end.
