Bush’s fault!
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
We’re all Floridians now.
DANG!
fracking!
Just a slightly larger than normal pothole.
Already banned in MD, iirc.
(But just imagine how much worse it would have been if they hadn't!)/sarc
is miss his humor - great line
Do you honestly think, with the berm already pronouncedly tilted towards the railroad tracks, that moving the vehicles could even be a remote possibility. The houses across from the tracks (behind) the cellie filmers, were already evacuated, and the ground was shifting quickly. The poor judgement/error was allowing the idiots to stand there filming. The ENTIRE area should have been blocked off.
Now if someone HAD been valiantly trying to “save” their vehicle, how many first responders would have to risk their lives to try and pull those vehicle owners to safety? Or what would the ultimate loss of life been? The public safety decision to NOT allow a mad dash to “save” cars probably saved a lot of lives.
Let me answer that for you: No.
And they are unwilling to go find anyone who does. A decent geotechnical engineer could have properly enlightened them in just a few minutes.
Disregarding the safety aspect of the situation, did you see the angle at which those cars were sitting before the retaining wall fully gave way? Driving those cars out would be like trying to drive up over the ridge on the roof of a house; the angle is too steep.
“Weird” story in Fredericksburg VA paper this AM.
Seems a Family of Coal Miners from KY relocated to VA in 1994 and rented (with option to buy) house along a river bank.
This week, for the 3rd time, house was underwater.
When trouble started, father and family members who lived in house called oldest son who lives about 15 or so miles from him, he came to house, got them out, salvaged what few possessions they could, also had extended family living in ‘trailer’ on property which was also destroyed.
Eldest son, who owns a construction business, was back to scene, is arranging to move a couple of travel trailers to site for temporary quarters and plans on getting to work on rebuilding the house.
NOW, granted, we can say maybe he should move, but for whatever reason (father slowly succumbing to cancer), sense of ‘home’, ‘pride’ or just plain stubbornness, the family is apparently looking out for itself.
Pictures show the family leaving the area in a canoe, all seem to be ‘smiling’....
MY POINT BEING (other than a seemingly ‘throwback’ to ‘back in the day)
I thought the ‘new’ way was to rent a house for peanuts in a ‘dangerous’ area, then when the inevitable SHTF, sit on your roof and wait for the helicopters to come rescue you, DEMAND to be put up in a FIRST RATE MOTEL/HOTEL or DEMAND Government provide you with new quarters IMMEDIATELY - and don’t try to push a FREE HOUSE TRAILER for me to use while waiting FOR MY MONEY from the GOVT.
How unique, this family ‘bonded’ together and are taking care of the situation.
(GRANTED, I have no idea if these people are going to ‘milk the system’ for all they can BUT that is just the cynicism people have me showing, just by their actions/reactions waiting with their collective hands out)
Note to self / “Pick up some touch up paint at pep boys on way home.”
Gawkers and rubberneckers are a strange breed. Sure would have been an interesting video if the section that gave way would have been a 50 feet further back. No wonder there is never a shortage of Darwin Award candidates.
You can hear them over and over again complaining that for three years, the city has neglected to properly repair some damage leading to the collapse.
Yes, they keep saying that here, but it’s more technically a landslide!
Wow, indeed! I didn’t even know (should have) about the whole retaining wall collapsing at once - bam! Thank God no train was moving down below at the time!
“sinkhole” is more dramatic and scary because it implies something you absolutely couldn’t predict.
Agreed! I wonder how close those people were to being pulled down with it. It’s hard to tell. People just standing there w their phones making videos, I’m surprised the copper didn’t tell them to move away.
