Inside Scoop: Tillis ad gets tough with Brannon (NC)

For most of the NC Senate GOP Primary race N.C. House Speaker Tillis has tried not to spar too much with his Republican opponents, to instead position himself as already running against incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan.

But as we close in on the May 6 primary we're seeing the toughest direct-mail ad Tillis has yet run against his closest competitor in the primary, tea party favorite Dr. Greg Brannon.

The ad, which hit mailboxes this week, calls Brannon "the Democrats' candidate of choice" and says "liberal Democrats are spending millions to help elect Greg Brannon in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate."

In bullet points, the ad enumerates a number of PR problems the Brannon campaign has faced, saying:

"Brannon failed to pay his own property taxes until widely reported by the media."

"A Superior Court jury ordered Brannon to pay nearly half a million dollars for defrauding his own friends in a failed investment scheme."

"As required by federal law and Senate rules, Brannon failed to file an official ethics statement, disclosing his financial interests."

"Brannon relentlessly attacks U.S. Senator Richard Burr - ranked as one of the most conservative senators in the country."

The ad concules "Greg Brannon doesn't share our values, shouldn't be trusted and he sure can't defeat Kay Hagan in November."

Tillis has spent money hitting Brannon in the campaign before - a mailer sent out last week mentioned the unpaid taxes.

But Tillis hasn't been throwing this kind of fire in the campaign so far, despite Tillis getting scrappy with him in several televised debates last week.

With the primary being decided next week, the Tillis campaign may realize this is their last chance to get over the 40 percent hump that would let them avoid a bloody and expensive July run-off with Brannon.

Greg Brannon doesn't share our values

That's a plus in my book, that he doesn't share Tillis' values.

Burr has been an adequate senator. Not a good one, but better than Hagan.

Tillis would be the same, better than Hagan, but nothing special.

Brannon, however, would be someone who I'd wholeheartedly support. God knows that we could use more true conservatives in DC.
