Skip to comments.Leadership Aide: Boehner 'Seriously Considering' Select Committee on Benghazi

John Boehner is seriously considering appointing a select committee to investigate the attacks on the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, according to a senior GOP leadership aide. The move comes after the revelation of an email from a top Obama national security official, Ben Rhodes, instructing Susan Rice to focus on an anti-Muslim internet video to explain the attacks.
The new emails this week were the straw that broke the camels back, says the aide. The Speaker was furious to learn that the admininstration withheld relevant documents from a congressional subpoena. Hes sick and tired of this evasion and obstruction from the administration, and wants a solution to finally force accountability, get to the truth, and provide justice.
Boehner, who has paid careful attention to the Benghazi developments since the attacks, has resisted calls to appoint a select committee, preferring to allow the various committees of jurisdiction to pursue investigations of their slices of the attacks on their own. Aides say Boehner continues to believe that the work of those committees has been valuable. The current committees investigating the attack have done good work, using their authority, including subpoena authority, to gather facts, interview hundreds of witnesses, and conduct dozens of hearings. But this weeks events demonstrate a new level of stonewalling and obfuscation by the administration that requires a new level of investigation.
The House Oversight and Reform Committee issued a subpoena for Benghazi-related documents in August of 2013, but the Rhodes email and a second set of talking points that originated with the White House were released to the public for the first time this week after Judicial Watch, a conservative research group, obtained them via a Freedom of Information Act request. For these reasons, according the aide, the reasons for appointing a committee now are straightforward.

Quick! Check for pigs growing wings!!!
Duh! Boehner is clueless.
I repeat something I posted earlier .... if true, it explains Boehner’s unconscionable foot dragging ......
Last year, after outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified in front of a Senate Committee about Benghazi, Boehner appeared on a radio show one day later and admitted to having knowledge about weapons being shipped to Turkey.
The question asked of Boehner had to do with an exchange between Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and Clinton, who testified that she had no knowledge of weapons being shipped from Libya to Turkey. According to Hershs source, not only was Petraeus overseeing an operation that was doing just that but the operation itself involved Hillary Clintons State Department, as evidenced by Stevens presence in Benghazi:
If Boehner had classified information about weapons being shipped to Syria from Libya, via Turkey as far back as January of last year, how long before that did he know about it? Despite a majority of House Republicans (185 38) who are calling for a Select Committee to investigate what happened in Benghazi, Boehner continues to refuse to appoint one. It stands to reason that if Boehner knew what was going on in Benghazi prior to the attacks, he wouldnt want the truth about Benghazi to come out now.

Oh Great! Another committee! /s
Obama Administration lackeys will visit Boehner with a bottle of Whiskey and straighten him out
Serious question: What would keep a select committee from being just as partisan as the Oversight Committee? Wouldn’t people like Cummings just keep bitching about the “witch hunt”?
He has to be dragged, kicking and screaming and pushed to do his job.
Or snowballs being thrown in a place down below, that is normally a tad on the warm side.
A valid question. Before Watergate could go forward, Republicans had to be convinced that there was a fire behind the smoke.
I have no idea if any Democrats are out there who will take of their blinders.
Gowdy’s gonna chair it!
LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR
Doesn't matter. Blinders on, or off, they are incapable of seeing.
Our side has to move on without them.
Fox just announced the select committee is a go. Boehner will announce today or Monday.
Gowdy takes no prisoners. (I just wish he’d get his grooming preferences sorted out).
Krauthammers Take: New Benghazi E-mail Akin to Discovery of Nixon Tapes

It is appalling that President Obama never was in the Situation Room the night of September 11, 2012, as our ambassador to Libya and three other men were being attacked, captured, and eventually killed after being dragged through the streets of Benghazi and tortured in hideous fashion.
Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, said that he: ‘Could not put forces at risk’ in order to rescue our men who were under Muslim terrorist attack in Benghazi.
An article in the Prague newspaper, Prager Zeitungon hit the bulls-eye:
The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their President.
If Trey Gowdy Chairs the Congress Select Committee to investigate Benghazi, this scandal will prove to be much worse than Watergate.
