‘Beezin’ Craze Can Injure Eyes

Teens are using Burts Bees lip balm to enhance a buzz.

Teenagers are finding new ways to get high and this time it’s by applying lip balm to the skin around their eyes.

It’s called “beezin,” named after the brand Burt’s Bees. Users say that it intensifies the feeling of being high or drunk.

Health officials say the peppermint oil in the lip balm increases tear production, causes swelling to the sensitive areas around the eyes and could cause some dangerous medical conditions.

“The appeal of using this lip balm towards the eye is because of the permeability, it being very instant,” said Certified Nurse Practitioner Tammy Todd with Minute Clinic. “It can cause a buzz to occur in young children.”

Anyone who has tried “beezin” and experiences pain or redness should seek medical attention.

Well, I called that one didn't I? lol

I am a Tibetan Buddhist and there is a TB smoke offering practice that involves making copious amounts of juniper smoke. After the summer of 2012 when we had three separate forest fires within 30 miles of here (2 within 5 miles) I decided to forgo it for a while as people are a little jumpy when they see smoke now.

It can also be done indoors using small amounts on a charcoal disk. There is a lot of juniper, two species, in the foothills around here but only a couple of scraggly specimens on my small lot. I'd love to plant more of some nicer varieties but nursery prices for trees are killer.

That will make you nervous about smoke alright-happened here a few years ago, too-there had been several forest fires about 30-40 miles away, and an unattended trash fire on the next road got loose and burned about 27 wooded acres before it was put out. Because part of that was a county park and trails, the person who left that fire unattended was fined for every tree over a certain size, in addition to the other damages. Every VFD was on edge for the better part of two years.

I do buy the charcoal discs on sites on the net sometimes, but out here, there is always oak charcoal for sale for grilling, and it can be gotten instantly...

Ah, yes, I bought some Royal Oak hardwood charcoal by accident thinking it was briquettes. Never grilled with it before but it does a nice job. It would make good incense coals, thanks for that thought. A million times cheaper than those disks I reckon.

2012 made us edgy about fires and last fall we had the "thousand year flood" so now rain is going to make us sleepless for a while. I'm hoping 2014 gives us a break from natural disasters. Aiyeeee!
