One good thing about the Obama presidency is that it has completely shattered the myth of a post-racial society in the U.S. Sectors of the country believed (with legitimate optimism) that centuries of white supremacy and institutional racism would be washed away because of a black presidency. Instead, it tore open the scabs on the festering sores of racism in this country.
In many ways, the Obama factor has had the opposite effect bullets flying off the shelves since the 2008 election in preparation for a race war, an increase in white supremacy groups, openly hostile attacks on black and brown people from the president on down, etc.
All of this despite the fact the President Obama has intentionally avoided issues of race, of acknowledging his blackness and all the ugly realities that go with it to prove he is a president of all the American people. The truth that the president is finally forced to embrace is that no amount of suppression or moderation of race issues wins any points with the right-wingers who control most of the media airwaves and legislative halls.
According to Ronald Kessler, author of In the President's Secret Service, the rate of threats against the president increased 400 per cent under Obama from the 3,000 a year or so under President George W. Bush. Some sources say its an average of 30 threats a day. And it not just the president there have been threats directed at first lady Michelle Obama and even daughters Sasha and Malia.
We know about the plan hatched by top Republican leaders on the night of Obamas inauguration to take back the House in November 2010 and to make Obama, in the words of Senator Mitch McConnell, a one-term president.
Obama was successfully re-elected but the GOP did take back the House and have obstructed most of the presidents program for the country. The number of blocked appointments to government and judicial posts is unprecedented.
Then theres the barrage of racist slurs, comments and cartoons about the president which black folks understand is also directed at them.
The Cliven Bundys and Donald Sterlings of the world also keep us grounded in the reality of whether or not America is in a post-racial period. While they represent very different economic strata, their opinions about blacks are not that far apart.
Bundy has been leeching off the government for 20 years in unpaid grazing fees. His statements about Negroes being better off as slaves fit right in with Sterlings plantation notion of taking care of his black basketball Clippers: I give them food and clothes and cars and houses.
Lets agree that the U.S. is not post-racial, a delusion that keeps us from grappling with the real and tangible effects of racism. Lets put some serious energy into breaking the chains of inequality and injustice, held together by white supremacy, that have our communities in economic and political chokeholds.
I imagine Jamala is another one of those Amish people.
... HE is truly a great leader!
as opposed to the left-wingers who control most of academia and alphabet agencies? seems pretty balanced then.
centuries of white supremacyThats the point where one files the self-serving hit piece under G.
I seemed to miss the part about out-of-control black crime, black-on-white violence (knockout game, et al), special black entitlement and on and on under Emperor Zero. I’d be fascinated to see this authoress’ data regarding the explosion of white-on-black crime, white-on-black violence, and special white entitlements under Zero. Where might dat be at ?
Who ARE these right-wingers who control MOST of the media airwaves ? They’re doing a good job of hiding themselves and hiding behind mountains of left-wing propaganda.
“Jive Turkey” is spelled with a “J.” (Like “Jamala”)
Ya no kidding. How is it that all I had to do was see the name 'Jamal' and I knew what kind of idiotic screed this was going to be? Must be I'm a racist.
I guess the editors couldn’t be bothered with this opinion.
>> Lets put some serious energy into breaking the chains of inequality and injustice, held together by white supremacy, that have our communities in economic and political chokeholds.
This is bullshit. Both Negroids and Caucasoids are contributors to racism. Should we evaluate which race exhibits a higher percentage of the xenophobic condition? And not to ignore the crap dispensed by the author.
“All of this despite the fact the President Obama has intentionally avoided issues of race, of acknowledging his blackness and all the ugly realities that go with it to prove he is a president of all the American people.”
Evidence the author of this delusional piece lives in an alternative universe.
No mention of the racist knockout game, of racist Oprah, of racists calling for an all-black NBA, of Spike Lee’s overt racism, Sharpton...
This article proves me right
Probably. For people like Jamala who never see race as a two-sided issue, HER race will always be the aggrieved party. Even with a black President, black AG (who refuses to prosecute black-on-white hate crimes) and a host of others at the highest positions in government, the blame is still on white people.
It’s official. Racial inequity, or the feeling thereof, is engrained in their DNA. The claims will never cease, never ease up. Even with full power (the trifecta) we’ll still be hearing tripe like this where all the blame for everything is put on white Republicans. You cannot have a post-racial America when one half of that racial divide simply is incapable of moving beyond the now natural disposition to yell ‘racism’.
“Lets put some serious energy into breaking the chains of inequality and injustice, held together by white supremacy, that have our communities in economic and political chokeholds.”
These people need to grow up and take responsibility for the failures of their communities, the root of which is not “white supremacy” but their own values, behaviors, and the cult of victimization.
I think I missed the part where Bozo “tried to prove he was president of all Americans”. It must have been sometime before he declared “I won”.
“embrace is that no amount of suppression or moderation of race issues wins any points with the right-wingers who control most of the media airwaves and legislative halls.”
Now, there's a new piece of information for me. The things you learn by reading FR, truly amazing.
It won’t wash, Jamala, the rising generation knows damned well they aren’t racist.
From the “About” section of their newspaper:
“The St. Louis American newspaper has emerged as the leading, most-trusted voice of the areas African-American community, and has extended its reach to become a major multi-platform media entity in Missouri. In 2012, The St. Louis American became the single largest weekly newspaper in the entire state of Missouri.”
What else would one expect? “Racism” is a business model.
