A progressive group in Maine has enraged supporters and opponents alike after it accused Republican lawmaker Dale Crafts of having No Spine and failing to stand up to the states governor.
Crafts has been bound to a wheelchair for 26 years as the result of a motorcycle accident.
Maine Peoples Alliance (MPA) circulated a leaflet designed to look like a medical prescription. On it was Crafts picture and his list of ailments, which included having No Heart and No Spine.
The left-wing group was attacking Crafts because he voted to deny health care to 70,000 Mainers and failed to stand up to Gov. LePages bullying, according to the flier.
MPA is upset that LePage and Republicans have continued to block Medicaid expansion in the state.
Earlier this year, the MPA created the website 157Mainers.com. It cited 157 as the number of Mainers estimated to die this year if Gov. LePage and the Legislature fail to accept federal health care funds. (RELATED: Maine Dem group blames governor for hypothetical deaths)
Republican lawmakers called for an apology from MPA for its flier targeting Craft, and Democratic leaders shared an email distancing themselves from the group, which lobbies heavily on behalf of state Democrats.
They are the heart and soul of the Democratic party, one Republican staffer told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
They may disagree with Dales political views, but these kinds of personal attacks are completely uncalled for and are inconsistent with Maines tradition of higher political discourse, said Republican Rep. Ken Fredette in a statement Friday.
I find it hard to believe that was a simple mistake by the MPA, said Republican senate leader Michael Thibodeau in a statement. This is a well-organized and well-financed group that has a history of launching unfounded, vicious attacks on their political opponents. But this is a new low, even for them.
In March 2012, MPA operatives stormed the state houses Hall of Flags to protest Republican policies. During the outburst, they shouted a group gathered at a multiple sclerosis event. Another MPA activist was caught shoplifting from a womans car while canvassing for the group.
Democrats seem fed up by the groups antics as well.
Weve only been out of session two days, and its not beginning in a good way wrote Democratic Rep. Brian Jones in a letter to fellow Democrats obtained by TheDCNF.
In fact, its pretty disturbing. Our allies sent a mailer attacking the Republicans for their votes against Medicaid expansion, continued Jones.
It isnt productive in helping the people of Maine make informed decisions by appealing to issues viscerally. Finally, even though the playbook might say that negative campaigning works, most of our constituents find it distasteful.
Jones urged other Democrats to email the Maine Peoples Alliance and voice your strong concerns over it.
For their part, MPA says it regrets the flier attacking Crafts.
The letter was distributed by volunteers in districts across the state and the stand up metaphor wasnt meant to refer to one legislator and certainly not to someones disability, Maine Peoples Alliance communications director Mike Tipping told TheDCNF.
We regret the unfortunate implication in Rep. Crafts case. I apologized to him personally yesterday for the inadvertent offense and he graciously accepted our apology.
The Maine Peoples Alliance is just a bunch of liberal windbags, said Crafts in a statement to TheDCNF.
I voted against ObamaCares welfare expansion because I go to work every day in my wheelchair, and I dont think I should be paying extra taxes just so able-bodied young men can get free Medicaid.
Mocking is a favorite tactic of the left. Did you see the WH Correspondence Dinner last night? 0 led the way at the Immaturity Hour.
Leftists are scum. The farther left they are the scummier they are.
“Another MPA activist was caught shoplifting from a womans car while canvassing for the group.”
Whatever she/he did, they sound like a lovely group.
Sure, negative campaigning works, but not this sort of thing. It’s just stupid and offensive and I’m glad that even the Dems had to condemn it.
The big 3 network newscasts will be all over this Monday evening....right....??
They really are hateful people. They deserve a large scale dress down.
Sounds like a Biden moment.
It’s only hateful when someone else does it
"The end justifies the means"
There’s nobody more vicious, in a juvenile way, than a progressive in a political campaign.
yep, reminds me of when Biden said “Stand up Chuck” to a wheelchair bound man.
Liberals are allowed to get away with things like this, so this won’t become a big story.
Some of us on the right at least aspire to improve our skills.
They mock because the Left have no ideas of its own. The only thing they can do is to hurl insults at their opponents. Like children in a kindergarten playground.
Liberals are so sensitive towards the disable. No spine...if a tea party person said it it would be front page and leads the news.
The left mocks anyone who they can’t gain points with politically..they only pretend to be on the side of the disabled and others when it benefits them..otherwise, these are their TRUE feelings..sickening..one day these liberal douche bags will have to face something called karma
Remember when Barackhole Obama mocked the Special Olympics on the Leno show by comparing his lousy bowling score to their disabilities?
A "blanket party" would do nicely.
I’m thinking a good ass-kickin’ is in order.
