It's Jew Vs. Jew as Battle Over Team Heats Up.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said on Sunday he expects Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling to put up a long, protracted fight to retain ownership of the team after being banned for life from the National Basketball Association because of racial comments.
Garcetti, appearing on CBS News Face the Nation program, was asked about a potential boycott of Clippers games if Sterling balks and said, I would certainly keep that arrow in my quiver.
Last week NBA Commissioner Adam Silver fined Sterling $2.5 million and imposed a lifetime ban after the revelation of taped conversations in which he told his friend, V. Stiviano, that he did not want her to bring black people to Clippers games or pose for pictures with them.
The NBA Board of Governors is expected to meet within the next two weeks to vote on forcing a sale of the team.
Sterling, who built a fortune estimated at $1.9 billion through Los Angeles-area real estate holdings, bought the Clippers for $12 million in 1981 and the franchise now is valued at $430 million by Forbes magazine....

He may not have long?
I hope he makes them pay so bad they will cry like babies when he is finished with them.
I honestly don’t think this will hit the courts. I think the NBA will make him a very profitable offer. If they have to fight this, everything about every other owner is going to be exposed for consumption from the masses, including stadium deals that were made with each individual city.
OK, this guy was indeed successful...at being an absolute pig, he made a lot of enemies (it IS apparently possible to be successful AND respected), and it finally caught up with him. And, given his health and age, he won’t be putting up a very long struggle at anything.
I really don’t think that there is anything political in this.
“Nothing political?” Do you by any chance reside in Colorado?
So if I don’t meet your standards of morality, diversity, decency or professionalism, I should have to sell off my private property? FRiend, that ain’t America, that’s Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia or worse...
This is all politics, if he were black and held black-only parties and joined an organization that claims all whites are evil that the NBA would give a crap??
No they wouldn’t
I wish someone would force me to sell something for a billion dollars. Poor Sterling.
If you had a business partner who went crazy and started ranting about how sharia law should be imposed on the U.S., you might not try top force him out of the partnership?
That’s the way I see it.
Adam Silver shot the NBA in the foot. If he’d just fined him and suspended him the rest of the season, the marketplace would have determined whether Sterling would have remained an owner. Now he has the opportunity foir a legal fight.
They should change it to “Democrat vs Democrat” guess Sterling didn’t give to Garcetti’s campaign
This was never about race; it was about being embarrassed that his gf was seeing guys who were generally considered better -- ahem -- lovers. There, I said it. Somebody had to.
LA being LA, this should all blow over quickly. Sterling isn't going to sell, and certainly not to better -- ahem -- lovers, though a few blacks have been considered possible buyers. Including Oprah, which might work out OK. Doesn't she own a plantation somewhere?
“So if I dont meet your standards of morality, diversity, decency or professionalism, I should have to sell off my private property? FRiend, that aint America, thats Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia or worse...”
Most public people, even movie stars, have enough sense to behave well. And, when given the keys to a SPORTS FRANCHISE he GIVES UP a great deal of his right to behave like an idiot. This is true of membership in ANY group, sports league (check the rules of MLB, the NFL, etc.) or not. He is more than welcome, I’m sure, to take the team “private” and start his own league. I’m sure, with the respect that you seem to have for private ownership, you can understand this freedom.
Then, he can do or say anything that he darned well pleases.
He was given the keys?
I thought he PAID for them
“This is all politics, if he were black and held black-only parties and joined an organization that claims all whites are evil that the NBA would give a crap??
No they wouldnt”
I strongly disagree with this. The ONLY thing that a sports league has supporting its license to print money is the support and respect of its fans. Anyone who endangers that will be immediately jettisoned like yesterday’s dog doo-doo by the other owners.
Sterling may be old, but he’s not being unfaithful — and as we all know, infidelity is anathema, anathema I say, to the NBA community — after 50 years of marriage because he’s on death’s door. The NBA might be able to make him sell the team, but it would be starting a bloodletting that would, in the words of the late Jim Morrison, make the whole ####house go up in flames.
Sterling’s been doing it his way for a long time now, but it still is no surprise that the NAACP was set to give an award to both him and to the racist riot-inciter Al Sharpton. The difference between the two men is that Sharpton is a racist in public AND has his own TV show to disseminate his racist views. Sterling was chewing out that plastic surgery (non-) success story he apparently calls his girlfriend, in private manner, and was surreptitiously recorded, probably by her.
“I thought he PAID for them”
You don’t get how a franchise works, do you?
If you own a FRANCHISE rather that a pure private business then indeed you meet the standards set by the people in charge of licensing franchises. It’s very American, we’re the country that perfected the franchise system.
“If you had a business partner who went crazy and started ranting about how sharia law should be imposed on the U.S., you might not try top force him out of the partnership?”
There might have been a clause in the partnership where “forcing” wouldn’t be necessary. I’d say that endangering/sabotaging the very survival of the business would probably be one of those clauses.
Buttin’ in — I wouldn’t be in business with a muzzie business partner in the first place, but in your hypothetical scenario (perhaps an ad hoc conversion to Islam), my partner would die young of natural causes.
Problem is if the marketplace decided against Sterling that would take money out of ALL the franchises hands. An NBA team is like a McDonald’s, you can’t just let one sink without it damaging the whole.
(A) Mr. Sterling was taped without his knowledge, which is, I believe, a felony in California (B) it was almost certainly done at the behest of Magic Johnson, who has been rebuffed in the past by Mr. Sterling in his attempts to buy the team so he almost certainly hatched a plot with the mistress to catch Sterling in a racist rant. Tell me, would you feel fine if EVERYTHING you’ve said in private in the past was broadcast to the world?
“If you own a FRANCHISE ...”
Well, put, but a legal/technical point; you are describing a “franchisee”. They “own” nothing but whatever was agreed to, (for example, an exclusive license to operate in a particular area) and they definitely don’t own the franchise. The “franchisor” does.
Ah, but we don’t know what the franchise rules are in this situation, do we?
What color is the sky in your world?
“Ah, but we dont know what the franchise rules are in this situation, do we?”
These are probably published in the case of a major league team. For example, it is known that the MLB has the “in the best interests of Major League Baseball” clause, which is incredibly broad. The Commissioner of Baseball has a great deal of power.
I really don’t think he should sell it, I think he should find some way to make those players and the league pay.
“It’s Impossible to Bring the NBA into Disrepute”
OK, I concede this point.
I never said he was Muslim. That was just an example. The point is a lot of businesses have agreements in place if a partner/co-owner/franchisee does/says something crazy/illegal/etc. That’s a part of business. Whether it’s always the right decision is another question, but I think it’s crazy so many conservatives are becoming hard line anti-business.
I think technically they own a business and a license to tie it to the franchise system. He clearly owns the team, with all the responsibilities and access to revenue that implies, and he gets to make that team a part of the NBA. Franchise life is complicated, with a lot of revocable parts.
I thinks it's a safe bet that the NBA just lost about 90% of it's white paying customers.
Hope the "League" accepts EBT cards.
Do you have proof of A or B? I think A is a reasonable assumption, but it still needs to be proven, but so far B is pure conjecture. This is a leftist technique. I’m sure Sterling has decent lawyers to defend his rights.
The ratings since this all started say they lost nobody, they’ve even gotten a bit of a bump.
I oppose rent-seeking, anti-competitive businesses like those filling up the Chamber of Commerce. Conservatives favor free markets and competition, this does not mean we support businesses who do not favor free markets and private property rights.
I don't like it, but isn't that the world we live in? Very soon people will likely be fired because they post on sites like this one. I don't like it, but the question is how can we stop it?
National divorce is the only thing I can think of. Anyone else have any ideas?
Conservatives used to say there is a penalty for being stupid. Now the government should protect people from their stupid actions? I don’t know if Sterling knew he was being recorded, but I am not sure he didn’t, because his general actions suggest he probably would have done something like that. But it was pretty clear, that even a total idiot would have known she was baiting him into saying stupid stuff, and he obliged her very well. I am not totally clear about what their relationship was, but this guy was asking for trouble in a major way. And he got it. And it doesn’t even seem like he cares. He wanted it, he got it. Sorry.
Look in the stands next season and see how many white faces you see.
This is but a Pyrrhic victory in the lefts class and race war.
Free markets mean I can have agreements with my partners that protect us from one of the partners damaging the business.
You mean states succession? It won’t happen and it wouldn’t work anyway.
“Mr. Sterling was taped without his knowledge, which is, I believe, a felony in California...”
...probably unenforceable in the 21st century.
“it was almost certainly done at the behest of Magic Johnson, who has been rebuffed in the past by Mr. Sterling in his attempts to buy the team so he almost certainly hatched a plot with the mistress to catch Sterling in a racist rant.”
This is conjecture, but worth looking into and any evidence of this should be taken seriously.
How much is Sterling worth? One billion or two, maybe more?
This is about ego, not profits
Look he is 80 and has prostrate cancer, do you think he became a multi billionaire by rolling over to the guy across the table? He and his trust will win this battle no matter how long it takes.
Don't you just love a great cat fight?
