LA Mayor: Donald Sterling Will Put Up 'Long Fight' To Keep Clippers
The Jewish Daily Forward / Reuters ^ | May 4, 2014

It's Jew Vs. Jew as Battle Over Team Heats Up.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said on Sunday he expects Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling to put up a “long, protracted fight” to retain ownership of the team after being banned for life from the National Basketball Association because of racial comments.

Garcetti, appearing on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” program, was asked about a potential boycott of Clippers games if Sterling balks and said, “I would certainly keep that arrow in my quiver.”

Last week NBA Commissioner Adam Silver fined Sterling $2.5 million and imposed a lifetime ban after the revelation of taped conversations in which he told his friend, V. Stiviano, that he did not want her to bring black people to Clippers games or pose for pictures with them.

The NBA Board of Governors is expected to meet within the next two weeks to vote on forcing a sale of the team.

Sterling, who built a fortune estimated at $1.9 billion through Los Angeles-area real estate holdings, bought the Clippers for $12 million in 1981 and the franchise now is valued at $430 million by Forbes magazine....

I honestly don’t think this will hit the courts. I think the NBA will make him a very profitable offer. If they have to fight this, everything about every other owner is going to be exposed for consumption from the masses, including stadium deals that were made with each individual city.

OK, this guy was indeed successful...at being an absolute pig, he made a lot of enemies (it IS apparently possible to be successful AND respected), and it finally caught up with him. And, given his health and age, he won’t be putting up a very long struggle at anything.

I really don’t think that there is anything political in this.

“Nothing political?” Do you by any chance reside in Colorado?

So if I don’t meet your standards of morality, diversity, decency or professionalism, I should have to sell off my private property? FRiend, that ain’t America, that’s Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia or worse...

I think the NBA wants it to get to court. They came down hard on Sterling just to make the story go away, and I suspect the league would be perfectly happy if a court overturned whatever penalties they imposed. That way they save face by kowtowing to the professional malcontents, but nothing really changes in the long run.

This is all politics, if he were black and held black-only parties and joined an organization that claims all whites are evil that the NBA would give a crap??

No they wouldn’t

I wish someone would force me to sell something for a billion dollars. Poor Sterling.

If you had a business partner who went crazy and started ranting about how sharia law should be imposed on the U.S., you might not try top force him out of the partnership?

Adam Silver shot the NBA in the foot. If he’d just fined him and suspended him the rest of the season, the marketplace would have determined whether Sterling would have remained an owner. Now he has the opportunity foir a legal fight.

This was never about race; it was about being embarrassed that his gf was seeing guys who were generally considered better -- ahem -- lovers. There, I said it. Somebody had to.

LA being LA, this should all blow over quickly. Sterling isn't going to sell, and certainly not to better -- ahem -- lovers, though a few blacks have been considered possible buyers. Including Oprah, which might work out OK. Doesn't she own a plantation somewhere?

Most public people, even movie stars, have enough sense to behave well. And, when given the keys to a SPORTS FRANCHISE he GIVES UP a great deal of his right to behave like an idiot. This is true of membership in ANY group, sports league (check the rules of MLB, the NFL, etc.) or not. He is more than welcome, I’m sure, to take the team “private” and start his own league. I’m sure, with the respect that you seem to have for private ownership, you can understand this freedom.

Then, he can do or say anything that he darned well pleases.

I strongly disagree with this. The ONLY thing that a sports league has supporting its license to print money is the support and respect of its fans. Anyone who endangers that will be immediately jettisoned like yesterday’s dog doo-doo by the other owners.

Sterling may be old, but he’s not being unfaithful — and as we all know, infidelity is anathema, anathema I say, to the NBA community — after 50 years of marriage because he’s on death’s door. The NBA might be able to make him sell the team, but it would be starting a bloodletting that would, in the words of the late Jim Morrison, make the whole ####house go up in flames.

Sterling’s been doing it his way for a long time now, but it still is no surprise that the NAACP was set to give an award to both him and to the racist riot-inciter Al Sharpton. The difference between the two men is that Sharpton is a racist in public AND has his own TV show to disseminate his racist views. Sterling was chewing out that plastic surgery (non-) success story he apparently calls his girlfriend, in private manner, and was surreptitiously recorded, probably by her.

You don’t get how a franchise works, do you?
