Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has named Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), a second-term Republican and former federal prosecutor, to head a new House select committee investigating the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012.
Gowdy was the preferred choice of Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) to take on what will be a high-profile assignment for the GOP over the next several months. The deep-voiced South Carolinian is known for his prosecutorial style in questioning witnesses at hearings as well as his impassioned floor speeches.
Trey Gowdy is as dogged, focused, and serious-minded as they come, Boehner said in a statement announcing the appointment on Monday. His background as a federal prosecutor and his zeal for the truth make him the ideal person to lead this panel.
I know he shares my commitment to get to the bottom of this tragedy and will not tolerate any stonewalling from the Obama administration, Boehner continued.
I plan to ensure he and his committee have the strongest authority possible to root out all the facts, he added. This is a big job, but Rep. Gowdy has the confidence of this conference, and I know his professionalism and grit will earn him the respect of the American people.
The Speaker announced on Friday that he would appoint a select committee on Benghazi after the release of a White House email that Republicans say is a smoking gun showing that the Obama administration misled the public in the days after the terrorist attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans.
House Democrats denounced the Speakers decision and have not said whether they will participate in the select committee, which they say is a move by Boehner to gin up the GOPs conservative base ahead of the November midterm elections.
Gowdy will likely replace Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) as the face of the House GOPs Benghazi investigation. He serves on Issas Oversight and Government Reform Committee as well as the House judiciary and education panels.
Issa praised the decision, saying in a statement that Boehner "could not have chosen a member more committed to getting the full truth about the before, during, and after of the Benghazi terrorist attacks than Congressman Trey Gowdy."
House Republicans have not released further details on the structure of the select committee, although a House vote forming the panel could come by the end of the week.
What was the President doing, and why was he doing it?
Get that boulder rolling faster towards the cliff.
Fantastic choice and a high-class response from Issa. Break out the popcorn.
Great idea-it makes perfect sense to have a trained prosecutor head up such a committee. I don’t know if Issa is an attorney, or not...
Great choice!!! Trey Gowdy is da man!!! This is going to be something to watch!!! I hope and pray the Democrat Party sticks with their plan not to participate in these hearings. It will be the political blunder of all time!!! The game is up.....Dems.....force Obama to resign or go down with him come November, 2014!!!
And.....to all voters that can vote in Pubbie primaries....get and out and vote right now!!! The onslaught of primaries begins tomorrow!!! And.....then when November rolls around....get out and vote once again. Destroy Obama and the entire Democrat “traitor” party!!!
Great news. The next and most important decision will be whom to hire as the committee’s lead counsel. I second Hugh Hewitt’s nomination of Andrew S. McCarthy, the former Assistant US Attorney (Southern District of NY) who put away the blind sheik, Omar Abdel Rahman and his whole crew.
I hope that when the Dims start ‘editorializing’, changing the focus and damning the authority of the committee, he just tells them...’You can ask the witnesses questions pertaining to Benghazi only, if you have no questions or won’t have any during these hearings, you are welcomed to excuse yourself from participating’.
What do you know, Boehner did something right for a change.

I must now stab my mind’s eye with an ice-pick!
The Republicans just raised again. Let’s see how much the Democrats are willing to lose.
Good no Democrats appointed would be a great victory. They would add nothing but obstruction and obfuscation to the process. I bet that they will have one ‘token’ RAT in the proceedings just to be present to obstruct whenever possible.
