Retiring after the election wouldn’t make much sense, if he had any such intention I don’t imagine he’d be running for reelection this year. Tip O’Neill was the last Speaker to leave the post voluntarily.

I agree. He should play king-maker and step aside now to let someone else grow in the position.

I've said the same thing about Mitch McConnell.

They need to groom the next generation now, instead of dying in office and letting others scramble for the seats later.
