House Democratic leaders are urging their members to vote against holding former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner in contempt, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said on Monday.
The Maryland Democrat said leadership would oppose the contempt vote, which is scheduled to reach the House floor this week, on grounds that it is “political messaging.”
Lerner, who retired from the IRS last fall, was responsible for the agency division that targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny as they sought a tax exemption. She has repeatedly refused to answer questions from House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa’s panel, prompting the contempt vote.
"We’re going to express our opposition certainly to the Lerner [vote],” Hoyer said.
Speaker John Boehner has previously said Lerner would face a contempt vote as long as she refused to testify and Republicans are hoping a court will determine that she waived her Fifth Amendment right not to self-incriminate after giving a short speech before the Oversight Committee last May.
Hoyer said he predicts any court will side with Lerner. “People want to read the Constitution right up until the time it makes them uncomfortable with providing people with the rights that they don’t think they ought to have,” he said. “I think if it passes, the courts will sustain Ms. Lerner’s claim of Fifth Amendment privileges.”

The long line of democrats in congress outside Lerner’s door hoping to sick her agency on their enemies is long. Nobody wants that side of the story coming out.

there must be emails connecting Hoyer to Learner, DOJ and the Whitehouse then.
Through Elijah Cummings, most likely. He and Hoyer are top dogs in the Maryland delegation.
“If in fact IRS personnel engaged in the kind of practices that have been reported on and were intentionally targeting conservative groups, then that’s outrageous. And there’s no place for it,” Obama told reporters.
“And they have to be held fully accountable. Because the IRS as an independent agency requires absolute integrity, and people have to have confidence that they’re ... applying the laws in a nonpartisan way.”

The drumbeat that needs to be started — because it’s completely true — is that Barack Obama has DESTROYED the traditional Democrat Party. The mainstream press has lately been presenting articles about division amongst “Republicans” and “Tea Party Conservatives” in the 2014 elections. Don’t let them get away with that.
The big story should be how many “traditional” Democrats realize their party has become some sort of Fascist/Communist group they NEVER would have belonged to if given the choice. If you read the “mainstream” — ie: Democrat — media these days, you can tell how much their “Republican” vs. “Tea Party” stories mask their growing awareness that what Barack Obama has wrought does not, and will not, appeal to the “traditional” Democrat base. They’re in BIG trouble.
The RATs own the federal bureaucracy. Of course they aren’t going to go against their own.
