By fifth grade, or age 10-11, Asian-Americans "significantly outperform whites," and the peak difference is reached by grade 10, or age 15-16.
"Overall, these results suggest that the growing achievement gap can be attributed to a widening gap in academic effort rather than to differences in cognitive ability."
Asian-Americans tend to be motivated by cultural teachings that instill the notion that effort is more important than inborn ability, researchers said.
They also endure "greater parental pressures to succeed than in the case of comparable white peers."

The left hates success and successful entrepreneurship, and individualism.
They hate whites for the same reasons. Leftism is a religion of self-loathing and perpetual victim-hood. Misery loves company, it’s who they are.
You can provide leadership without abuse and you can abuse without leading. That applies to both children and adults. Too many people confuse the two as either a reason to avoid leading or an excuse to abuse.
Abuse is violation of the roles that the parents and children play in the society. Parents are expected to facilitate learning in their children. Methods vary across cultures.
The catch is that children are not as sophisticated as adults; you cannot guarantee that a mere talk will convince a bad student to become a good one. This is why many societies approve physical punishments of children - it's something that children understand well. Even a smart kid, who heard the talk and logically understands that his parents are right, may be unable to restrain himself in some situations. Fear of punishment is a backup control mechanism. Children still learn from their own mistakes; however guidance from parents helps them to survive until adulthood. Too many Sons of Obama manage to stop a bullet with their bodies before they figure out that gangs and crime are not such a good idea.
My comment was largely facetious and meant to be humorous.
Yet, there is truth in it.
The psychological abuse is the greater issue.
It’s somewhat complicated in that instilled discipline is a good thing.
We used to have that in the US. Because we’ve lost our way, we look with a loss of objectivity to Oriental culture because it has a semblance of what we used to have.
But there is a difference between a work ethic and filial piety.
As an American, old time from pre-Revolution immigrants and Cherokee from way back, I know a lot about East Asian culture due to my marriage and extended family and friends.
There’s good and bad in this “trying harder”.

If we removed Ritalin and various other medications from kids who are just high spirited (and their mentally fragile parents can’t handle it) we would have a lot more success.

This study shows nothing new. 20 years ago, when I was taking Education classes, several studies showed that grades were inversely proportional to time spent watching TV: the more time watching TV, the lower the grades. And Asian-American kids watched the least TV, about 1/10th as much as other kids. Moreover, when I was studying Psychology, at least one study showed that the more time spent doing homework, the higher the grades earned. Again, Asian-American students spent more time on homework, 2 or 3 times as much.
Asian kids get beat pretty good. Scarring included.
Years ago I was talking to some Chinese students at a college bar; they said they did better than Americans because they had no social lives. They really did simply spend more time studying...

For starters, the same simple basic reason that also puts Asians ahead of whites: intact homes.

Imagine a group of people easily distinguished by their physical appearance who came to America as slaves. They were denied education by law and suffered horrible racism by law even after being freed. Finally, after time a critical mass of African Americans built up successes in business, science and medicine to create a real African American middle-class, built on Jim Crow segregation. Then government meddlers came along and forced desegregation on a resistant general public. Desegregation worked well in the military, but that’s a unique environment.
So the natural achievement driven integration that eventually ends racism and ethnic segregation is destroyed by government action, for a good purpose. What happens next is that urban Democrats, the natural party of manipulation and control, uses racism to control cities. As this manipulation grows you have people at the mercy of the government, ending with Johnson’s Great Society programs and a massive expansion of the welfare state.
Faced with that and the origins of the black family which could be broken up by their masters as slaves, the black family was placed on a path to extinction, for a good purpose. At what point would black families have developed into an engine for education and achievement?
There was a half century in which real achievement and strong families were being built. It was sandwiched between two times when government intervention made blacks slaves. Apply that logic.
The Chinese are notorious cheats. They cheat like crazy in school and expect their teachers to either help or look the other way. It’s pretty hard to make racial generalizations, especially because the idea of race is totally artificial. Culture is real. Try calling a Chinese Japanese or a Mexican Guatemalan.
Whites outperforming Asians happens all the time.
Not much, only based on the few Asian families I know, but I would also like to know what YOU know about it.
Of course there are Europeans who outperform some Asians. But on average, east Asians do better than Europeans academically.
