White House sets out looming climate risks for U.S., calls for 'urgent action'

Flooded rail lines. Bigger, more frequent droughts. A rash of wildfires.

Those are some of the alarming predictions in a White House climate change report released Tuesday, part of President Barack Obama's broader second-term effort to help the nation prepare for the effects of higher temperatures, rising sea levels and more erratic weather.

"Climate change, once considered an issue for a distant future, has moved firmly into the present," the National Climate Assessment says, adding that the evidence of man-made climate change "continues to strengthen" and that "impacts are increasing across the country."

"Americans are noticing changes all around them," the report says, echoing a draft version from last year. "Summers are longer and hotter. ... Rain comes in heavier downpours."

In a statement released to coincide with the report's publication, the White House called for a rapid response.

"The findings in this National Climate Assessment underscore the need for urgent action to combat the threats from climate change, protect American citizens and communities today, and build a sustainable future for our kids and grandkids," the White House said.

Obama and his administration have long said that climate change is already affecting communities. More than 300 experts helped produce the report over several years, updating a previous assessment published in 2009.

If it weren’t for the thousands and thousands of drooling toads in the news media and government bureaucracy who are nodding along with every obvious lie he spews we could afford to just laugh at Obama.

Life is a mist. I said that when I was twenty five. I’m 60 now. It’s even more of a mist. I’m still as active as I was in my 20’s, but I understand the wisdom of Paul when he said, “...to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

I am trying to communicate a lot of different perspectives when I say that this life is like a video game. I respect it as such when it comes to the things I can not change.

How can that be?

He told us during the campaign cycle for this first term that just by electing him we would see the oceans recede, blue skies, and butterflies. He was to be the one that we have been waiting for.

What the hell is going on? this is his second term and we have not seen any of this stuff.

Look at all of the hurricanes that hit this country in the past few years. Devastating!! Or, wait, was there any???

Can any of the Glo-Bull warmers explain this from the past?

Droughts in the Southwest in the Chaco Canyon area.

1125-1180AD.

1270-1274AD.

1275-1290AD.

In 1831 a massive drought hit the Western Kansas area and the water holes all dried up. Mountain Man Jedediah Smith was looking for water for his wagon train on the Santa Fe trail when he disappeared, believed jumped by Indians.

Not far from where Smith disappeared, back in the 1880s Clayton NM was hit with a massive snow in the late summer or early fall, then in 1914, a massive flood hit Clayton NM.

Maybe it was Bison passing gas, Indians hauling their logs to Chaco with CO2 producing human labor, or those motorized covered wagons.

I've got a few more years before I'll be able to look at things so philosophically, I'm afraid.

But I'm trying.

All those horrors AND more will happen if Republicans and their ‘friends’ don’t get MORE money for Unicorn research...

“Urgent action” —> “investments” —> TAXES

Dead on.

Obama’s honesty, and the fantastic job they did on legislating /implementing health care, we should make sure everyone knows how successful these hoaxers will be with leading the great masses on how to solve globull warming.

(pssst - They are trying change the subject /seize the agenda as their handlers in the media wing can no longer contain the extraordinary dishonesty, incompetence, corruption and failures of these clowns.)

What’s really weird is that I am having an absolute blast now. I sincerely believe that the nation will not survive Obama, but I know the Lord is going to handle this in whatever way he sees fit. It may mean a horrible future for me in this life. Heck, most of the apostles died a horrible death - but I know the Lord provides and eventually it will be Game Over no matter what happens. So it’s all good.

To amplify, just a short story: One day I was bicycle commuting and attacking the worst uphill of the ride. Suddenly this philosophy bubbled to the surface: God put me in this body and I have the luxury of experiencing electrical impulses from all over my body and can interpret them any way I want but, ultimately, each one means that I am alive.

I stood up on my pedals and powered up that hill, yelling, “I’M ALIVE!” and knowing it with every “pain” coming from my legs and lungs. It was invigorating.

I learned something that day.

If such urgent action is necessary, then it’s time to cut the travel budgets of federal agencies by 99%: it’s for the children.

“People are noticing (extreme weather) all around them...”

Okay, let’s see what the prez might notice, here is the official report from DCA yesterday:

High 66 Normal 73 Record 94 in 1928 (hmmm)

Rain .38” Record 3.24” in 1953

Yeah, things are really spiralling out of control.

Yes, watching something as big as a nation circling the bowl can be fun in a way.

It’s not that it’s fun. It’s that I ignore it. I’ve said to people that I feel like the Bruce Willis character in The Twelve Monkeys, when he’s visiting the past shortly before it comes undone. I see it almost like it is a “happier” past than the future I’m from and I’m truly enjoying it.

And I moved to an area where the bad stuff still has little effect on me. I’m dead serious when I say if feels like I’ve stepped back in time 50 years here, but with modern conveniences. It’s in the little things like seeing a pickup go by with six kids in the back - and nobody cares.

Hopefully, you have a woodstove and a well with a hand pump. I believe the electrical grid will tend to collapse with the rest of the country.

Yep. I also have two streams running through my property. I bought this two weeks before the 2008 election and moved here in Aug. of 2011.

I agree... On the other hand if they wanted to do something OTHER THAN steal from taxpayers and scare the gullible, they could plant trees in urban centers... stop the ‘heat sink’ effect. Or fund Unicorn research which would be equally relevant...
