Federal judge orders halt to 'John Doe' investigation

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered a halt to the "John Doe" investigation targeting groups including Americans for Prosperity, here seen holding a pro-Scott Walker rally in Madison in 2011. The challenge brought in U.S. District Court in Milwaukee was filed by Wisconsin Club for Growth.

U.S. District Judge Rudolph Randa on Tuesday ordered a halt to the John Doe investigation that targeted the recall campaign of Gov. Scott Walker and “all or nearly all right-of-center groups and individuals in Wisconsin who have engaged in issue advocacy from 2010 to the present.”

In issuing his preliminary injunction, Randa sided with Wisconsin Club for Growth, finding the John Doe probe into alleged illegal campaign coordination is hampering the group’s constitutionally protected right to free speech.

The Milwaukee-based judge ordered prosecutors to “cease all activities related to the investigation, return all property seized in the investigation from any individual or organization and permanently destroy all copies of information and other materials obtained through the investigation.”

“all or nearly all right-of-center groups and individuals”

right-of-center groups.........who makes that call? It’s scary that people and or groups can be labeled like that.

Yet another example of judicial overreach.

This is a very poorly written article. It states: "Judge Rudolph Randa on Tuesday ordered a halt to the John Doe investigation that targeted the recall campaign of Gov. Scott Walker". It uses words such as these in several places.

This says, to me, that the judge ordered a halt to the investigation of left wing opponents of Walker. However, the context of the article says the opposite: the judge ordered a halt to the investigation of "right wing groups" supporting Walker. I believe the latter is true.

Seems the state prosecutor was on a blind witch hunt/fishing expedition against conservative groups in general. Like a crooked sheriff who pulls you over and bashes a headlight with his flashlight and exclaims, “looks like we got us an equipment violation here...”

Am I reading the issue right?

"Am I reading the issue right?"

I think you are. It seems that the "journalist" writing the article must have gotten D- in English classes from third grade on. (See the post just before yours.)

"permanently destroy all copies of information and other materials obtained through the investigation.”

Yeah, right, that stuff will start showing up when it is convenient.
