On Friday, the U. S. Department of Education sent a letter to Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz, threatening to revoke the states waiver from No Child Left Behind because Indiana exited the Common Core national standards last month.
The letter states:
IDOE (Indiana Department of Education) met ED (Department of Education) requirements in its approved ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act/[No Child Left Behind]) flexibility request through the 2013-14 school year by adopting and implementing standards common to a significant number of States. Because the IDOE will no longer implement those standards, IDOE must amend its ESEA flexibility request and provide evidence that its new standards are certified by a State network of IHEs (Institutions of Higher Education) that students who meet the standards will not need remedial coursework at the postsecondary level.
The saga of NCLB waivers is further evidence of the administrations clear fingerprints on what is ostensibly a state-led effort.
In 2009, the U.S. Department of Education circumvented the normal legislative process (through which a law like No Child Left Behind would be amended and reauthorized) by offering each state flexibility waivers from some of the more onerous federal mandates in NCLB.

Speaking as a Hoosier: FO DOE!
You people have been dumbing down kids for far too long. It has to stop.
By dumping the FED motivated [No Child Left Behind])CommonCore program
I believe they have " dumped the chump " FED monies
for a move to ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE over Common Core mediocrity (lowering expectations).
It has been my contention that the education community hated NCLB so much they would be willing to do anything to rid themselves of it. So far it seems I haven’t been wrong. Common Core made it easy.
The Federal government is now a thug culture.
The federal government needs to get 100% out of education
Stay strong Indiana!
Abolish the Dept. of Ed. It is only an indoctrination program and has no pedagogical function whatsoever.
Wasn't this a M*A*S*H* episode?
Henry Blake: Captain Sloan here is with supply.
Captain Sloan: More accurately, I’m with the 375th Q. M. H. Q., COMSEAPAC, SEOULSEC REPDEP.
Hawkeye: Maybe I’ll have that drink.
Captain Sloan: Now, the business at hand is an incubator, that is if my lieutenant understood what your colonel said you captains want.
Trapper: And we need one as soon as possible.
Captain Sloan: Well, let’s see what the good book says.
Hawkeye: The good book?
Captain Sloan: The Manual of Supply and Requisition.
Captain Sloan: Um, “inhalator, indicator, innoculator, infusilator - “ Here it is: 437 - stroke - R2, incubator.
Henry Blake: Thar she blows!
