California Mileage Tax Would Charge Drivers Based on Distance Driven

Sick of the gas tax?

What about a tax on every mile you drive?

A new bill going through Sacramento would tax drivers for every mile they are on the road.

The state gasoline tax of 52.9 cents per gallon could be replaced with a "miles driven fee" of $0.05 cents or so per mile driven, under state legislation proposed by a Bay Area lawmaker.

State transit officials note that there's not nearly enough money available to fix the many bridges and roads in California that are in desperate need of repair.

A federal highway fund, based on taxes on fuel, is expected to run dry this summer.

“We've got to figure out how to pay for infrastructure,” state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) said. “One philosophy is, if you use it, you should pay for it.”

Under SB 1077, introduced by DeSaulnier, a still-to-be-determined California city would begin taxing motorists in January 2016. The longer your commute, the more you would pay.

That may yet be a tough sell, but a $0.05 per mile fee could raise over $100 billion for roads in some parts of the state, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.

This is so BS. There is so much money in the road funds that they are working off of the interest being accrued. In fact I have heard repeatedly that CA pulls money out of the gas taxes to pay for many special interest projects that are suppose to be paid for out of the general funds.

Roger that. It ain’t that far to Truckee for me to go get some tax free gas. Of course even tax free, Cali gas is probably still gonna be higher than in Reno.

Close the borders.

Deport the illegal half of the population.

Use the savings for infrastructure.

If the thieves in government didn’t steal the money meant for the roads to pay for their socialist spending schemes the situation wouldn’t be so bad. But here in California where the demonrats rule, rather than cut spending they just steal the money from other areas and throw it into the general fund and spend us into poverty.

I have a better idea. why doesn’t the government just take all your money and then just give back what they don’t use.
it will save on paperwork.

they spend it on mass transit and bike trails and eco projects.

Yes there is that. But it is a small percentage compared to highway maintenance.

We already pay per mileage driven,

It’s called GAS taxes on every gallon...

this is just a thinly disguised excuse - another one - to track our every move - to track how much we each drive. (And down the road, they’ll decide how MUCH we can drive, individually - like x-amount of miles allowed for work, groceries, etc - and then we’ll get our individual ration books - based on the ‘carbon footprint’ they deem we should be held to.

NOT being factitious.

Why is it the answer to just about any problem, for a liberal, is “we need more money and power.” ??? Why isn’t the answer, we should re-prioritize money we are spending elsewhere. The only time they want to do that is when they think they can take it from military spending.

“with GPS they can track how many miles you drive and where you go etc”

Yes, that’s the plan.

If you drive in another state, they don’t charge you for it, but they can report that mileage to that state, so you can be billed for that, too.

After a while, when the mileage tax doesn’t solve the revenue shortfall, they will gradually bring back the fuel taxes.

They can/will also have a highway tax at each annual registration. This one would be highest for electric vehicles.

$0.05 cents

Way to go, NBC writer. It is either $0.05 or it is simply five cents.
