Employers Eye Moving Sickest Workers To Insurance Exchanges
Kaiser Health News ^ | May 7, 2014 | By Jay Hancock

Can corporations shift workers with high medical costs from the company health plan into online insurance exchanges created by the Affordable Care Act? Some employers are considering it, say benefits consultants.

"It's all over the marketplace," said Todd Yates, a managing partner at Hill, Chesson & Woody, a North Carolina benefits consulting firm. "Employers are inquiring about it and brokers and consultants are advocating for it."

And the health law might not prohibit it, opening a door to potential erosion of employer-based coverage.

"Such an employer-dumping strategy can promote the interests of both employers and employees by shifting health care expenses on to the public at large," wrote two University of Minnesota law professors in a 2010 paper that basically predicted the present interest. The authors were Amy Monahan and Daniel Schwarcz.

Move just the SICKEST workers and not all of them?
That’s not what Comrade Obama had in mind.

Their care will deteriorate greatly since the exchanges have narrower networks.

A sure-fire investment (although not one I find ethically appealing) is stock in any pharmaceutical company that manufactures opiate-based pain-killers.

That’s all these people will be getting in a few years. Too bad about all those kids who become opiate addicts because of this.

And as an example of sheep mentality:
the state of NJ has started a “wellness” program for employees; if employees provide their health info, such as weight, rate of exercise, Body Mass Index, AND they authorize their doctor to release info to the state, the employee can earn “up to” $250, divided as “up to” $150 the first year and $100 the next. Why would the state need that info a cyncial employee asks? Why are they bribing employees to provide it? Why are employees running to sign up? This article answers the first 2 questions.

Thanks for posting it.

Step #1 employers dump the sickest
Step #2 the rest of us are then forced on to subsidize those in step 1

It’s difficult to believe that Obamacare, with its 2000 pages doesn’t block that ploy.

that’s the ticket. the’re just medical units after all. it’s just a simple transaction. a cost benefit analysis. these people just get very good at draining the morality from all their decisions.

This, of course, was all predicted right here at FR.

“It’s difficult to believe that Obamacare, with its 2000 pages doesn’t block that ploy.”

Are you serious? The corporate interests who are planning on using this any many other aspects of the Affordable Health Care Act to make piles of money are the very people who wrote this bill.

they know the total dollar amount of your claims.

if they see 100K worth of payout in a calendar year they
can conclude that you have a serious illness.

if you are less than 65 and lose your coverage and are in this situation, well, vaya con Dios.

Time to copy/paste my standard response to this:

When I lose my policy, I will not sign up for the exchanges. When they send the fine, I will not pay it. Eventually, they MUST issue a warrant to arrest me for not paying the fines and when they do, I will ignore its command. Eventually, they will have to act to enforce that warrant and then they will knock on my door, when they do I will not answer it. Eventually, they will be forced to kick the door in and when they do they will be met with resistance and they will pay a price.

Of course, I know that I will pay the ultimate price, but they must be willing to shoot me dead in order to mandate their health insurance utopia. It is that way with every one of their desires, but this one is my bright line.

It is hard for me to imagine that folks would sell out for such a pittance, however you are right and many will.

Move just the SICKEST workers and not all of them?

You know that the retirees will be moved first. But to offer employer health insurance benefits to some employees but not others (the sickies) might be illegal.
