The Georgia couple is described as "sweet as can be," and authorities are scrambling to unravel the mystery of how Russell Dermond, 88, was killed and then reportedly decapitated, and his 87-year-old wife disappeared.
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office is treating Shirley Dermond's disappearance from the Eatonton home -- where her husband was found dead Tuesday -- as an abduction, Sheriff Howard Sills said in a statement.
Police suspect that Russell Dermond was killed between Friday and Sunday.
The Dermonds' friends hadn't heard from them in days and went to their home in the upscale, gated, lakeside Great Waters community, where they found in the garage "what we are virtually certain is the body of 88-year-old Russell Dermond," Sills said.

I suspect the Amish.
Horrible! I wonder what happened.
As one ages it’s a good idea to keep one or more big dogs and one or more big, loaded guns around the house.
or doper son or grand kid
Jus a redstribution thang. Yall had yo time to spen dat money-we be gittin it now!
Darn Big Dawgs.
Possibly not. They lived in an expensive, gated community where Amish might stand out too much. I also live in a community where they might stand out too much and had a near brush with four probably illegal aliens who came to my door one late evening, knocked aggressively, and ran like Hell when they saw me approaching the door. I’ve never come so close with the Amish.
Just more illegal aliens doing the looting Americans won’t or can’t do. /s
I practice what I preach. My two DBDs are an 85 lb. Pitador and a 110 lb. Great Dane. And, before the Terrible Boating Accident . . .
We used to suspect Muslims, and I think in decapitation cases, we still do.
Did the wife recently join the local mosque?
I agree. Doesn’t sound like a typical Amish-type crime to me, what with the beheading. But it’s right up the alley for an MS-13, or one of their wannabes.
lots of amish are muslim. don’t forget.
I heard it was on a lake and police are investigating whether killer/killers came in by boat. FBI has been asked to help.
The head is still missing.
Some kind of ritual or satanic killing?
Very bizarre and unsettling.
The POS’sss who did this have a fiery eternal home awaiting for them. Some people live like the devil as if God is not watching.... how can they sleep at night doing such evil?
Boko haram ?
GA FReeper ping. This is ugly.
My three are Carolina Curb Setters.
These old folks seemingly were targeted murders. The dead man’s history will most likely reveal some cause for a murder’s vicious vengeance.
I do too.
Doper I could get. Grand kid I can’t. Decapitating is some really sick twisted crap or just outright hate.
It’s not enough. Going to get to the point where we need concertina wire over a fougasse pit, punjii stick traps, and remote-detonated claymore mines around the perimeter of your house.
BTW, while Reynolds is a gated community, there is no guard to stop someone from just driving into the area, most of the time. If a croquet match or riding event or golfing event is going, then the entry is guarded/controlled.
Dude! You mean you don’t already have that arrangement? Prep man, prep!
Most serial killers are in fact NOT amish.
Sounds like the Drug Cartel sending a message to one of these poor people’s kids or grandkids who are mixed up in drugs. They will kill your whole family and think nothing of it.
Did someone say this was a serial killing?
the drug angle could be viable...but I suspect the elders were simply collateral damage from some grandson’s drug dealing....like, we’re going to kill these people and we’ll bring you the proof, etc...
the thought of a bigger fence etc is fetching, but if you build a fort that no one can get into, HOW THE HELL DO YOU GET IT?.....you need to have open access to get out as well if SHTF..
You position these 'sally ports' in locations that give maximum chance to flank the enemy's likeliest direction of assault.
In a typical American home, this may be a side door leading from the garage to the front or back yard. These doors are often the portals into your home that home breakers/burglars/invaders use to gain access, so fortify them with deadbolt locks, a decorative metal security door fastened with lag bolts into the frame, or at a minimum a door brace.
Yes, it was a Terrible Tragedy. Fortunately, my tea cup love puppies were back guarding the estate, so I still have them.
Thank God for the tiny pups! Sometimes they are the best watch dogs. The best “watch” dog I have ever had is totally blind. He is a 15 lb JRT and he “hears” everything and lets me know about it!
My best guess: follow the money. Who profits by their death/disappearance.
Not true. The problem with yappy dogs is that they always bark - about everything or nothing. The constant barking doesn't signify anything except that the dog likes to bark.
The drug cartels do a brisk business in decapitations.
He doesn't bark at nothing, he barks at something, first.
Continuous noise doesn't alert anyone to anything.
Have you said anything to your neighbor?
My next door neighbors have 2 English Mastiffs, close to 400 pounds of dog flesh. The dogs were both in the house when burglars broke into the master bedroom and stole jewelry. They had to know the dogs were there and were not deterred
This is a gated, well patrolled, very rich community. This is an incredibly shocking incident for this area.
On more than one occasion. She apologizes for the noise, puts them in the house and they stop barking, and then she lets them out again 30 minutes later when the barking starts all over again.
I have never had a dog, big or small that barked constantly.
You obviously never had schnauzers. The neighbor has had as many as 4, but I suspect someone turned her in to the county (max three dogs without a kennel license) She usually has three, but sometimes only two. I keep a log so that if my wife agrees I'll turn her in to the county for harboring public nuisance animals. However, my wife doesn't want to "start trouble with the neighbor." I'd say that the neighbor has already sted trouble.
I tell my neighbors, if you hear my dogs barking outside then I am at home, because if I am not at home, my dogs are inside the house.
Exactly! My closest neighbor has 3 outdoor dogs who barked continually all night until I finally got fed up enough to politely notify him that his dogs were keeping my wife and I awake for hours every night. He now keeps them shut up in his basement for most of the night, but even so they still begin barking again at 7 AM when he lets them out.
My point is that those dogs couldn't possibly bark any louder or sound any more fierce even if his home was being invaded by a car load of criminal intruders.
