OPINION: Russia Could Station Missiles in Europe in Response to NATO Moves

Russia could deploy short-range Iskander missiles in the country’s westernmost Kaliningrad region if NATO decides to strengthen its military presence in Eastern Europe, Lt. Gen. Yevgeny Buzhinsky told RIA Novosti.

“Russia is a nuclear power,” he said. “If NATO becomes more active, we will deploy a division of Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad Region,” added Buzhinsky, who previously headed the department of international agreements in the Russian Defense Ministry.

US Air Force General Philip Breedlove said Tuesday that NATO will consider permanently stationing troops in parts of Eastern Europe following the increased tensions over Ukraine, Reuters reported.

“I think this is something we have to consider and we will tee this up for discussion through the leaderships of our nations to see where that leads,” he was quoted as saying.

A move like that would put serious pressure on Poland and Germany, who this message is obviously intended for. The bear is reminding them that it really does have fangs.

Take note of this:

Franz Klintsevich, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense, told RIA Novosti that deployment of NATO infrastructure in Eastern Europe and in the Baltic States endangers these countries and Russia should diplomatically deliver this message to the leadership of these states.

“A serious object in the Lithuanian territory, any modern nuclear weapon – means Lithuania basically doesn’t exist anymore, and politicians should understand that, this is a serious issue,” Franz Klintsevich said.

Smooth move by Obama canceling missile defense in Eastern Europe.

Russian leaders will post junk weapons, but they’ll beat their chests and shout to the world about it in advance.

It isn’t the weapons the are important. It’s the message it sends.

It does appear that the Russians feel threatened by Obama cancelling missile defense. Who knew that Obama is a master of foreign affairs?

And what message does it send that the military annexation of the Crimea does not? Message received. No one is impressed.

It’s obviously time to update the scrapped Pershing missiles and put them in Poland.

Interesting. Kaliningrad is that funky little Russian enclave on the Baltic between Poland and Lithuania.

You threaten us, we threaten you.

Remember “Just a regional power”?

So, in your opinion, invading another country with agents provocateur, special forces, and stuffing ballot boxes during a "referendum" which you use as a pretext for a military invasion is actually less threatening than shuffling some missiles around when The NeoSoviet® Empire has plenty of missiles that can hit Europe where they already are.

No wonder you post all this piffle. You haven't the sense that God gave lettuce.

And if they put missiles or bombers in Latin America? And there is always Cuba.

Can you make an any more circular argument, that still means nothing? It says a lot that you miss the entire point of the article.

What does “invading another country” have to do with move/countermove international diplomacy?

I’ll hold my breath waiting for a LOGICAL answer. (Not so much...)

And if they put missiles or bombers in Latin America? And there is always Cuba.

They already have ballistic missile subs off our coasts. Land bases are superfluous, except to deter invasion. No Latin American country is going to offer up its people as a human sacrifice, and even if all of them did, what's the point? Subs can get closer and are not subject to being overrun by local troops, which will happen if locals disagree with Russian policies. Cuba offered to host the missiles because it was afraid (and for good reason, at the time) that the US would invade.

And when I say the locals disagree with Russian policies, I mean if the Russians attempt to use them for anything other than preventing American invasion of the countries in which the missiles are based. The fact is that basing these missiles outside of Russia makes them a lot easier to disable, given that locals can be cajoled, bribed or threatened in a way that Russia cannot.

"How dare NATO keep provoking Russia."

And if Russia was building serious military infrastructure in Cuba, how would the US react if it had a real President?
