OPINION: Russia Could Station Missiles in Europe in Response to NATO Moves

Russia could deploy short-range Iskander missiles in the country’s westernmost Kaliningrad region if NATO decides to strengthen its military presence in Eastern Europe, Lt. Gen. Yevgeny Buzhinsky told RIA Novosti.

“Russia is a nuclear power,” he said. “If NATO becomes more active, we will deploy a division of Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad Region,” added Buzhinsky, who previously headed the department of international agreements in the Russian Defense Ministry.

US Air Force General Philip Breedlove said Tuesday that NATO will consider permanently stationing troops in parts of Eastern Europe following the increased tensions over Ukraine, Reuters reported.

“I think this is something we have to consider and we will tee this up for discussion through the leaderships of our nations to see where that leads,” he was quoted as saying.

" And I thought you Russians keep telling us the Cold War is over."

What, now I'm a Russian?

And I didn't say NATO is moving nukes closer to Russia. They don't need to, they're already there.

No, although I’ll admit that I jumped the gun with the Russian thing. Ron Paul supporters confuse me that way. Did you see what a great hit he was on Russia Today?

Didn’t you get the memo??

Anyone not swallowing and regurgitating the MaidanPR/OFA/SEIU-style propaganda is a “Paid Russian agitator” now.

Moscow Center needs to train its operatives to read and understand English a bit better.

No one is impressed by this "counter move." It sends a weaker message than the original NeoSoviet® invasion of the Crimea did in the first place.

How could anyone be under any illusions? The memo that was send out in 1937 is still in effect: Whomever is the current enemy of the NeoSoviet® Empire is a Nazi. They will be Nazi's until such time as they become friends of Mother Russia. Then they will be brother socialists, until it's time for them to be Nazis again.

It's very simple: Nazis are whomever the Kremlin designates to be Nazis today. They may or may not be Nazis tomorrow. And tcrlaf will write what his masters in The Lubyanka tell him to write.

No, the “paid Putinista propagandists” are at Russia Today. You should be familiar with them, you post their work often.

I don’t follow Paul. After he came out in full support of Amnesty I wrote him off entirely...like the vast majority of GOP.

“Russian leaders will post junk weapons...”

Umm, no. The Iskander-M is a mobile, multi-role strike weapon.

“The Russian Iskander-M cruises at hypersonic speed of 2100–2600 m/s (Mach 6–7) at a height of 50 km. The Iskander-M weighs 4615 kg, carries a warhead of 710–800 kg, has a range of 400–480 km, and achieves a CEP (Circular error probable) of 5–7 meters. During flight it can maneuver at different altitudes and trajectories and can turn at up to 20 to 30 G to evade anti-ballistic missiles. For example, in one of the trajectory modes it can dive at the target at 90 degrees at the rate of 700–800 m/s performing anti-ABM maneuvers.[4][9]

“The system is intended to use conventional warheads for the engagement of point and area targets, including:
hostile fire weapons (missile systems, multiple launch rocket systems, long-range artillery pieces)
air and missile defense weapons, especially stationary
fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft at airfields
command posts and communications nodes
troops in concentration areas
critical civilian infrastructure facilities

"Umm, no."

Russia also gave it to Iran and Syria (to Syria through Belarus). It shows an obvious signature, can be hit before launch and can be hit by western ABM systems before maneuvering in its terminal phase. And as I wrote, Russia tends to make inflated Iran-like Russian announcements about its weapons early on. It was not wise for Poland and Czech to listen to Russia and reject the ABM systems offered to them under the Bush Administration.

That’s also a Russian army weapon for use against ground targets. It’s no match for what NATO armies can do.

On speed, a Scud will go mach 5, but it can be stopped.
