U.S. Roman Catholics count on Hispanics, even as more leave the church

A new survey of more than 5,000 Latinos by the Pew Research Center finds that parishes like St. Cecilia are facing a paradox: Even as the population of Hispanic Catholics is rising in the U.S., a greater number are defecting to other faiths.

Nearly one-in-four Latino adults, or 24 percent, are now former Catholics, according to the survey.

Roman Catholics who have left the faith have tended to either drift toward a Protestant denomination or have ended their affiliation with religion altogether. According to the Pew Research Center survey, about 22 percent of Hispanics in the U.S. identify as Protestant, while 18 percent say they are religiously unaffiliated.

Yet more than half of the nation’s estimated 35.4 million Latinos, or 19.6 million, identify as Catholics.

And as of 2013, one-third, or 33 percent, of all U.S. Roman Catholics were Hispanic, according to the Pew Research Center.

So as the study puts it, even as Hispanics leave the church, because of the growing size of the Latino population, “a day could come when a majority of Catholics in the United States will be Hispanic, even though the majority of Hispanics might no longer be Catholic.”

Or as a different recent study — the National Study of Catholic Parishes with Hispanic Ministry — notes: “Hispanics account for 71 percent of the growth of the Catholic population in the United States since 1960.”

That study, released Monday, was written by Hosffman Ospino, professor of Hispanic ministry and religious education at Boston College, in collaboration with the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University.

The protestant churches all favor amnesty, too.

Being a Catholic is harder than being a protestant I guess.

No. They favor amnesty because some of them have adopted this squishy idea that everyone is a “victim.” They are very wrong on this as they will soon learn.

Very odd wording. Obviously no Hispanic ever made a considered decision to leave Catholicism and become a Protestant.

No, he just "drifts" into a Protestant church, like a leaf blown by the wind.

Slowing their decline in membership is part of it. The other part is it is a leftist church and the thinking is amnesty will create more Rat voters. If the govt is controlled by leftists the church will get more of it's "social justice" agenda pushed through.

In Los Angeles, former Archbishop Mahoney sold his soul to illegal invaders, counting on them to fill the pews in his churches. A loser in so many way is the Archbishop Mahoney.

At a Catholic high nearby, they had black man running the school, after about two years they fired him because he was only accepting black students in to the school......

One of the history teachers told the class that the White House was painted white because America is a racist nation....

Not making this up....

In the state of Rhode Island, Hispanic Christians were among the most vocal opponents against the state’s endorsement of sodomy.

We need more Christians of every race to take a stand for Christian values.

The Church does NOT favor amnesty. Catholic doctrine provides that nations have a right to secure their borders.

"Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants' duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens." Catholic Catechism, 2241.

The American bishops have taken it upon themselves to contradict and violate Church doctrine by trying to make open borders an article of faith.

If you know of any major Christian denomination in the United States that is vocally AGAINST amnesty, feel free to let me know. I haven’t found any yet.

In most cases, the lay people are strongly against it, whereas the clergy in leadership positions are strongly pushing for it. That goes for Catholics and Protestants, as well as other groups like Mormons.

Backpedalling so soon? You previously said "all churches".

We do know how a couple of the major denominations vote, and the Catholics sure vote for the pro-immigration side, while the major Protestant denomination is almost rabidly anti-liberal in their voting.

>> We do know how a couple of the major denominations vote, and the Catholics sure vote for the pro-immigration side <<

The Catholic vote is very different depending on ethnic group. A majority of white Catholics OPPOSED Obama, while a majority of Hispanic Catholics strongly supported Obama (as well as numerous Obama administration initiatives that the Catholic Church as a whole opposed, like the HHS mandate and gay marriage, etc.)

>> while the major Protestant denomination is almost rabidly anti-liberal in their voting. <<

The Methodist Church is an example of a "major Protestant denomination" in the United States. They are the second largest protestant denomination in the country, and the third largest Christian church overall. I doubt most people would describe the average Methodist as "rapidly anti-liberal" in their voting.

A couple other examples might fit your describtion, for example, I would say the Southern Baptist Convention is overall pretty rapidly anti-liberal in their voting. But again, if you were discuss the immigration issue specifically, if would break down as follows:

Most lay Southern Baptist members strongly oppose rewarding illegal aliens.

Most Southern Baptist clergy in leadership positions strongly SUPPORT rewarding illegal aliens.

Which again, is also true of EVERY major religious group in the United States. The lay people are against illegal immigration, their religious leaders are in favor of illegal aliens. If you know of any exceptions to this rule, please inform me.

Again, feel free to let me know of any “protestant denomination” in the United States that is vocally opposed to illegal immigration. I’m still waiting. Is the Presbyterian Church organizing “send illegals home” marches?

The Catholic denomination votes democrat and always has, it is a church denomination not a race, and their vote has always been predictable, and democrat, and always will be, with extremely rare exceptions.

The Protestant vote has gone democrat 3 times in history, and the second largest church denomination in America, a Protestant one, is about 80% republican voting.

Even Hispanics become more anti-leftwing when they leave the Catholic denomination for a Protestant one.

UNITED STATES CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS

""Nearly eighty percent of Catholic voters support earned citizenship ""

WASHINGTON—A large majority of Catholics support immigration reform legislation that provides a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country, according to a recent survey sponsored by the Office of Migration Policy and Public Affairs of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

>> The Catholic denomination votes democrat and always has, it is a church denomination not a race, and their vote has always been predictable, and democrat, and always will be, with extremely rare exceptions. <<

You seem to be confusing Catholics with Jewish voters. If it "has always gone Democrat", how the heck did George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, and Dwight Eisenhower WIN the Catholic vote when they were running for President? None of them were Catholic candidates.

That seems to reflect that Catholics vote how the nation as a WHOLE votes (unlike Jewish voters, who reflectively vote Dem, even if a Republican Presidential candidate wins the nation as a whole easily) John Kerry is a Democrat, and he LOST the Catholic vote, despite BEING a Catholic. So what happened to Catholics "always voting Democrat" in those elections?

Most pollsters disagree with your premise that Catholics are a safe Democrat voting bloc. That might have been true in the 1930s, but it certainly isn't true given how Republican Presidential candidates have won Catholics numerous times in recent decades. Jews are a safe Democrat voting bloc that has overwhelmingly supported every Dem Presidential candidate for at least 80+ years (in contrary to numerous Republicans who fantasize about how Jews are "in play" every election cycle), whereas Mormons are a safe GOP voting bloc that reliably votes Republican even when Republicans do poorly nationally (Bob Dole, John McCain, etc.). Catholics are as swing vote that tend to support the candidate that the country as a whole supports, which the occasional exception.

In fact, 2012 was the third straight Presidential election where the Catholic vote has been a near-carbon copy of the overall vote nationwide. If Catholics are "safely Democrat", shouldn't have Obama to win over much more than 50% of them? Shouldn't have John Kerry, a Catholic and a Democrat, won the Catholic vote in 2004 INSTEAD of George W. Bush?
