Search warrant: Missoula man may have been high when German student shot

Markus Kaarma may have been under the influence of marijuana when he shot and killed German exchange student Diren Dede, according to a search warrant requested by Missoula police.

The search warrant also indicates that during previous burglaries of the Missoula home, unknown suspects had taken all the marijuana and marijuana pipes out of the garage.

Kaarma, 29, is charged with deliberate homicide for the shooting of the foreign exchange student, who was finishing his junior year abroad at Big Sky High School.

According to the affidavit, Kaarma and his wife, Janelle Pflager, had been robbed several times before and set the garage up to ensnare a potential burglar.

The garage door was intentionally left open and the couple set up a motion detector and a baby monitor in the space. A purse was also left in the garage.

In the early morning hours of April 27, Dede entered Kaarma’s open garage. Authorities have not indicated why Dede entered the garage, but once alerted to his presence, Kaarma grabbed a shotgun and exited the home. He fired four shots into the back of his garage, which was dark at the time.

Two of the shots hit and killed Dede, who was pronounced dead at St. Patrick Hospital.

According to the affidavit, Kaarma fired after the teenager attempted to make verbal contact with him. The affidavit also states that he told his hairdresser several days earlier that he had been staying up late at night to "kill some (expletive) kid."

Subsequent searches of the Grant Creek home revealed Kaarma kept a mason-style glass jar containing marijuana in a kitchen pantry, and a neighbor told police that Kaarma smoked marijuana in the garage.

A neighbor also informed police that burglars had taken marijuana and marijuana pipes out of the garage during the previous burglary.

A search warrant requested by Missoula Police Detective Dean Chrestenson and signed by District Court Judge Karen Townsend allowed law enforcement to take a blood sample from Kaarma on April 28, while he was in the Missoula County jail pending bail.

It's anticipated that the results of the blood draw will be available within a month.

On Tuesday, Kaarma's attorney said he is still investigating the allegation of marijuana use. Attorney Paul Ryan has indicated his client will plead not guilty.

Interesting.

So a guy who likes to smoke pot in his garage should just take being burglarized or it proves pot is bad?

Laying in wait is frowned upon. Still, another ol’ boy recently did the same and there is no indication he was smoking pot. Just fed up with richard cranium breaking into his house.

Breaking, entering, burglarizing with the intent to steal property. That's the nature of "garage hopping". Acute lead poisoning is a likely consequence.

Clearly you've led a very sheltered life. Guess I have, too. I've never heard of it either. Maybe I should check with the recovering juvie delinquent next door. He used to be into all kinds of things.

University of Montana Muslim Student Association president Salvatore Farrara, whose given name is Nooriddeen, said that his Muslim organization is providing support to Dede’s father ..

Dede’s father: Celal said that the family plans a burial in Turkey..

Diren Dede , exchange student of Turkish descent , was committing a felony, if not for that he might be alive today.

“So the results of pot smoking are unpredictable; i.e. some will kill their neighbors and others will not?”

Well, nothing is 100% predictable. Not even sober people.

But I'd say 95%+ of people are far less inclined to be angry or violent on pot. Maybe 4%+ stay the same and a very very small group actually become more angry. I've met hundreds of pot smokers and nobody has ever heard of anyone becoming directly violent from it.

Booze is FAR more likely to directly incite aggression and violence. Countless people I've met become violent 100% of the time they get drunk and have domestic violence rap-sheets a mile long. Two of them actually stopped drinking and switched to pot which eliminated the violence.

Hmmm. So it might be the breaking and entering/trespassing that caused the problem?

I know, I know, drugs and the state induced by their use are totally benign. Druggies are genuine geniuses, never have accidents, all diseases are immediately cured upon the inhalation of one drag off of a marijuana cigarette and multiple trillions are saved in state revenues. Druggies never kill intentionally or accidentally, they do not lie, cheat or steal to get their drugs and paradise on earth will result if only the bad old rest of us would give the druggies their chance to have unfettered use.

I tend to believe that those supportive of unlimited drug use are addicted. Druggies need unfettered access to their favorite drug. They have tried all manner of stories to get to those drugs. They deny any problems just like an alcoholic, they miss work, just like an alcoholic, they suffer physical ailments, just like an alcoholic and the list goes on. Unfortunately the non-addicted will have to pay the freight and pick up the pieces of their fractured world.

Drug use is a harmful vice and there is absolutely no need for one more harmful vice. We have enough. In two states the accident rate has already "spiked;" but no, we need more harmless drug use spreading over our country. (Sarcasm!)

I never said “drugs”. Only pot.

If the WOD was truly about safety and keeping society “good”, they would include alcohol. It is worse than pot in EVERY POSSIBLE WAY yet is sold 24/7 at driver rest areas and gas stations. Alcohol would also be far easier to control than pot.

But they don’t do it and that proves it is all an obvious farce to make certain people rich.

Government involvement in booze and drugs isn’t about safety. It’s all about “managing” and getting a piece of the profit.

Laying in wait is probably wrong and certainly unlawful, still I sense a growing frustration in a general sense.

There have been more of these stories it seems.

The family — Turkish immigrants — planned to bury the teen in Bodrum, Turkey, after a memorial service at Yeni-Beyazit Mosque .

This garage shopping Muslim would likely have been killed in his native Turkey, too.

Likely. But this story has so much spin potential for big government lovers on both sides of the aisle...

Dede’s garage shopping companion that night was an exchange student who has since returned home to Ecuador.

Ryan said Dede and a companion had broken into garages at least three of four times before the April 27 shooting, and the neighborhood was on alert after a series of burglaries.

Ryan said he received a transcript from a police interview in which the companion admitted to entering the garages. The statement did not identify the companion, but Ryan told the Missoulian newspaper he is an exchange student who has returned home to Ecuador.

In his Turkish homeland, he would have had his right hand cut off as punishment for theft...if caught by the police first. That's for a minor infraction.

My father was XO at 32nd St Naval Station San Diego (1970-1977). He received a call from the commanding officer of a Turkish vessel berthed at 32nd St. The CO was requesting permission to conduct an execution aboard his ship while still berthed. My dad denied the request. The CO then informed my dad that they would be casting off at daybreak to sail where they could conduct business. What act prompted a sentence of execution? A drunk enlisted sailor took a swing at the Officer of The Deck upon return from a night of drinking in San Diego.

The arguments of druggies are all the same. They “feel” themselves to be unique when compared to the sober, which by the way may be another consequence of drug abuse.

Only the drug user is rational, calm and above the fray. All a druggie can use by way of argument are logical fallacies such as ad hominem. Trace the sayings of all the pro drug users on this forum you are not unique. You are all the same. The druggie is defending a vice. Amazing!

You haven’t explained why alcohol and tobacco are legal if government control of drugs is about public safety.

That’s a reasonable argument that proves government hypocrisy 100%. All you have is “you’re a druggie” when I am for making ALL drugs illegal. Most people who try illegal drugs the first time are under the influence of alcohol at a party. Alcohol is the true gateway drug.

Either all dangerous drugs should be legal or all illegal. Otherwise it’s a racket to make money for certain people while taking our rights.

Pot is the drug of peace.

You can tell by how sweet, calm and gentle your critics here are today.

Just don’t get between them and their stash. Or their Cheetos.
