Two in five Austrians think Nazi era wasn’t all bad, survey finds
World Jewish Congress ^ | 08 May 2014

Posted on 05/09/2014 12:48:06 AM PDT by Olog-hai

Sixty-nine years after the end of World War II, nearly a third of Austrians would like to have a “strong leader” (Führer) at the helm of their country “who doesn’t have to deal with elections and a parliament”, according to a new study published on Wednesday in Vienna.

Asked about what Nazi rule from 1938 to 1945 had given the country, 36 percent of the 1,015 Austrians surveyed answered “both good and bad things” while three percent said “primarily good things”. […]

A clear majority of respondents (56 percent) said discussions about the Holocaust and the Second World War should now end. This figure was higher than in previous surveys. …

Do these idiots not understand that if it was Austrians along with Jews that Hitler hated on whim that they would have suffered the same consequence! Someone correct me if wrong but did not Austria cater to the Germans in WWII?

It is weird seeing Mel Brooks thinner and younger, there.

Monarchy, Fascism, and Antisemitism run deep in their cultures and political thought.

Last night I watched a German documentary called "The Unknown Soldier," which was produced in the late 1990s and concerned the Wehrmacht's collaboration with the SS during the Holocaust. During protests of the so-called Wehrmacht Exhibition, a traveling exhibit focusing on Army war crimes, the media tried to interview old German soldiers who felt like they were being wrongly smeared. However, when the 20-something neo-Nazi protest leaders intervened and ordered them to shut-up, they fell right back into old habits and meekly did as they were told.

Very telling.

Mitch, you raise a good point. As an example, Hitler was terrified that his father may have been the illegitimate child of a wealthy Austrian Jew who had hired his grandmother as a maid. So, to hide that possibility he had the village where all of this may have occurred blasted off of the map - paying particular attention to the cemetery, synagogue and church where the evidence may exist.

“Someone correct me if wrong but did not Austria cater to the Germans in WWII?”

They were incorporated into Germany in 1938. In the 1860s two German states (Austria & Prussia) battled for supremacy of the hundreds of smaller German entities, and Prussia won. While they led the new Germany formed in 1871, Austria looked south for an empire (Austria-Hungary, which collapsed after WWI). In 1938 the much smaller Austria joined Germany; as German troops crossed the border to make it so, there can be some questions about Austria’s complicity in it. The allies, who had said this couldn;t happen at the end of WWI, did nothing.

The German army had little to do with the mass murders; this was mostly done by SS units that followed the combat troops (Einsatzgruppen). The German army tried to keep their independence, and attempted to kill Hitler. Even the Malmedy massacre on the Western Front was perpetrated by an SS unit.

That's a myth. While the average conscripted "Private Joe Fritz" was not directly involved since he was up on the front lines fighting, there's tons of documentary evidence that the German Army, as an institution, collaborated heavily with the SS in carrying out the Final Solution.

Somebody had to round up all the Jews, Romani, and Slavs in the vast Nazi occupied territories for the SS to murder, and it was the Wehrmacht that did it. The Wehrmacht also supplied soldiers and equipment to assist in the mass executions and burials.

That was the point of the Wehrmacht Exhibition, to knock down the myth.

In 1934 there were 176,034 Jews in Austria, or about 9% of the population. In 1951, there were 9,000 or about 0.6% of the population.

The greatest achievement of Austria in the 20th Century was convincing the world that Hitler was a German and Bach was an Austrian.

I'll answer that question. Because they get stuck in a hybrid system of social democracy. You have a system which inevitably locks up into gridlock, because they're trying to do economic planning within a democratic framework. No plan gets majority support, so you have gridlock. The government becomes at once all powerful and all incompetent. It makes promises it knows it can't keep. Just think of Obama's big lie to get ObamaCare passed.

If you follow the law, you're a chump, while the connected, the politicians, the crooks and gangsters all get incredibly weathly, while your situation deteriorates.

Eventually, people look for a strong man to bring the government under control and make it behave rationally.

They never ever try limited government and individual freedon. So, Europe goes through these political cycles.

Well, Hitler was Austrian, so it appears in the end, Austria won. Hitler despised everything about Prussia.

Very few things in this world are all bad. Even with a really psychotic government in place they got highways, VWs, and some serious leaps in technology and medicine. The question isn’t whether or not it was all bad, because the accurate answer to that is always no, the question is did the good out weigh the bad. Which in the case of Nazism would be hell no.

I didn't see in the article whether the interviewees were actually alive during the period in question. That makes a huge difference. So does being a member of a group directly involved in the violence - I don't think you'd get that answer from Austrian Jews (if you can find any) or from anyone directly affected by the war such as a soldier or victim of Nazi political persecution. In short, if you weren't directly involved, or if all you know about the thing is second-hand, you might well be able to idealize the period.

The Nazis were a fanatical subculture that exercised a power out of proportion to their numbers by rebuilding a police State from the top down. It is no exaggeration to point out those tendencies in the current administration and its adherents.

That’s in spite of the government, which means said government didn’t get in the way. Ferdinand Porsche was trying to shop his car design around to pre-existing car companies (one of them being NSU, who turned him down; VW ended up buying out NSU and other companies after the war thanks to the revenue from strong sales of the Type 1 “beetle”). The design was sound enough that it wouldn’t have required government assistance to make it emerge as the “KdF-Wagen”.
