KKZN Denver to drop liberal talk

Yet another of Clear Channel’s Liberal Talk stations is dropping the format. “AM 760″ KKZN Thornton/Denver is next in line to shift to another Talk variation following similar moves in recent months at sister stations in Portland and Los Angeles.

Morning host Gloria Neal posted on Facebook that she had been fired as the station would be changing formats. With Randi Rhodes ending her syndicated show next week the station is losing two of its shows. Greg Foster, VP/Programming for Clear Channel Denver confirmed to the Denver Post that Neal was let go. “I can confirm that Gloria Neal’s show is no longer on KKZN and she is no longer with our company. We will be announcing new programming for KKZN in the near future.”

Clear Channel registered RealTalk760.com last December that could potentially be used for KKZN. With the company also owning News/Talk/Sports 850 KOA and Conservative Talk 630 KHOW perhaps the company will follow in the footsteps of its Los Angeles and San Francisco clusters and move Rush Limbaugh off of KOA to enable it to focus on all local programming. After KKZN drops the Liberal Talk format, Clear Channel will be left with three Liberal talkers in Albuquerque, Asheville, and Madison in their portfolio.

Another one bites the dust, in a very liberal town. They s still have NPR. Clear Channel so they'll blame this on Bain Capital/Mitt Romney

Maybe this is another sign that the pendulum is finally starting to swing back.

More likely they finally realized as much as they love their liberal politics - now one listens.

If a tree falls in a liberal talk show, does anyone hear it?

Didn’t Randi Rhodes or some other collectivist talk show host hold someone hostage at a radio station or refuse to give up the radio booth not long ago?

I’m surprised it hasn’t happened again.

Here’s the thing, which few grasp. For a decade...none of these liberal talk shows or local stations were making any money. Rhodes, Gloria Neal, etc? None have seen any raises or upgrades for an entire decade. They’ve all been waiting on the gravy train to arrive....for someone within the old chain of liberal chatters to help them get up the next step or find a MSNBC job. Well...it never came.

The local stations that carried this stuff? They kept waiting for more listeners and more dynamic stuff. It never came.

NPR? No one is leaving much or moving on, because there’s no community out there....willing to pay what they were making at NPR. Hoping to break into NPR? The best you can do is get on with some local state station, and hope to wait thirty years out, and maybe some NPR guy finally retires.

You can go into some areas like north Ala or eastern Tenn, and conservative talk radio is absolutely dominate, with NPR way behind. People may not be totally with Rush, but there’s more than enough options now....that you could listen any of five different conservative talkers....if you desired...in the mid-day.

format change

>>Brace for big changes on the local radio scene. Specifically AM 760. Gloria Neal posted on Facebook:

As many of you know I have splitting my time between hosting the Gloria Neal Show on AM760 Radio from 7am -10am and being a part of the 6pm News Team on CBS4, Mon-Fri. As of this morning, The Gloria Neal on AM760 is no more. Clear Channel is completely changing the format. The official announcement has not been made as to what the format will be, but none of current hosts will be on the new station.

>>“Colorado’s Progressive Talk” may be unplugging. The station was previously a sports talk outlet. The word Thursday morning from Greg Foster, Clear Channel vice president/programming:
“I can confirm that Gloria Neal’s show is no longer on KKZN and she is no longer with our company. We will be announcing new programming for KKZN in the near future.”

Don’t know, but Randi wasn’t renewed at Clear Channel’s Premiere syndicated company...

In Boston the NPR stations (WGBH, WBUR) do pretty well (incl. govt funding/CPB). When mostly conservative talk WTKK changed to hip hop, WGBH picked up liberal/centrists Eagan and Braude who had been on WTKK.
A guy named Jeff Santos was paying to put liberal talk on the air, including at WWZN 1510. The station owners turned him away (plus he kept losing money) to go to sports and now will be so-called libertarian talk radio (G. Beck, Dr K Show,
Alex Jones, Jay Mohr). WRKO Boston has been conservative talk for years (Howie Carr, Jeff Kuhner) and does OK as does WBZ nighttime host Dan Rea, also fairly conservative.

Clear Channel tried prog talk in Boston at 1200 and 1430 and failed. (They also admittedly didn’t do well with conserv talk on the 1200 and now lease it out as Bloomberg News Radio). But what does it say about prog talk on the commercial dial that in Boston someone had to pay to put it on?

I recall the 2004 election. 1200 and 1430 had flipped to
prog talk in Oct of that year. The stage was set for a victory celebration as “President Kerry” would show up to a jubliant crowd downtown, and Al Franken was to broadcast his show from Boston that week. Then...it was not to be (ha!)...and for the next few days Franken and company sounded very downbeat, and almost like they hadn’t gotten sleep in the past week. Of course he sounded like that normally anyway.

I listen to this station about 6 times a year, just for the humor value of the ‘callers’. TO THIS DAY, THEY STILL BITCH ABOUT BUSH. Even Ed Schultz has grown tired of it.

If this keeps up Thom with an H is going to have to go back to Lansing and start spinning country records again.

I have listened to talk radio for years —even NPR sometimes — and out of openmindedness tried to listen to progressive talk. Politics aside, it is just dismally bad: nasty, unappealing, untalented hosts and no interesting content.
