The victim, who was not immediately identified, was with his 24-year-old mother visiting a friend on Edwardsville Road at about 4 p.m. when the attack occurred.

According to Delaware State police, the boy’s mother, who is several months pregnant, was inside of the house while the 4-year-old played in the yard near her friends three pit bulls. According to state police, the boy had been around the dogs several times in the past.

Fours years old, and ripped to death by pit bulls, that seems to happen a lot.

In before it’s not the dogs, it’s the owners.

Too late.

Pit bulls are the sweetest dogs around, until they turn viscious. I would never truct one near a child.

Owning a pit bull is like staring down the barrel of a loaded 45 —

Why would you???

The 4 year olds mother was pregnant but still tried to rescue her child. She’s being treated for her injuries - but what kind of “treatment” does one offer to a mother who saw her child ripped apart by dogs and couldn’t stop it?

The child had been around the dog before so people (mom?) seemed to assume it was safe. That’s because people like those who come on threads like this one to make jokes, tell you their pit will lick you to death or insist, without proof, that these dogs COULDN’T be pits actually end up persuading others that the dogs are safe and are simply misunderstood. Very Very sad. Would not want to be any of the first responders to see yet another child killed by pit bulls. The kid was pronounced dead at the scene - which means Mom basically saw it all - no...that never makes me feel like joking around but pit bull enthusiasts tend to ignore the human suffering.

I also question the mother who let her 4 year old play with 3 pitbulls. I wouldn't leave a 4 year old alone with any dog, never mind 3 pitbull I didn't own.

photo Dickens_stare_zpsa9f6acbe.jpg This is Dickens, my giant Sheltie. Probably the gentlest dog in the entire world. My wife was babysitting a six month old child last week, and my advice to her was to not allow any chance of Dickens and the baby being alone together, not even for an instant. The chances of his harming a child are Slim and None, with Slim in the ICU and the undertaker measuring him for a coffin. It's a chance I refuse to take.

My 4 year old would never see the inside of a house or a backyard that contained one pit bull, never mind three.
Even if it was my mother’s house

"I wouldn't leave a 4 year old alone with any dog, never mind 3 pitbull I didn't own."

And therein lies the crux of the issue. People who blame the dog and obviate the parents or owners of responsibility in cases like this, presumably believe it's safe to leave children with other breeds, and in doing so, display their ignorance on the subject.

Ignorance abounds. The young mother, and the dogs owner are way beyond stupid.

I have a pit, German shepherd mix male, and a pit bitch. My dogs are dangerous, and they are a useful deterrent. I would not permit anybody to wander around my property unless escorted by me. If you hop my fence you have a problem with my dogs. If you roll up to my closed gate call the displayed phone number and I'll corral the dogs and open the gate remotely. There are a few folks who know the gate code and the dogs, they keep their children close until I corral the dogs.

Reading another article about this incident, the dogs were not restrained (wandered the neighborhood to which the owner just moved into a rental house), they were not vaccinated nor spayed/neutered.

So I would say in this case, the owner does have a lot to do with it.
