Modi in power could bring India, China closer: Chinese daily

Beijing, May 7 (IANS) If BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi comes to power, it could bring India and China closer, says an influential state- run Chinese daily. The Global Times in a write up says that Modi was once a "practical businessman". After he became chief minister of Gujarat he established good relations with China. "A large number of Chinese enterprises invested in Gujarat, contributing to the economic development of the state. Therefore, ties between China and India may become closer under Modi's leadership," says the daily. The article, titled 'Modi victory could cause disquiet in West', says that "there is still visible disquiet about the prospects of the election in mainstream Western media". It says that some Western media and observers are "trying to foment discord between China and India by hyping up nationalist Modi's aggressive statements on the border issue between the two countries. They underscored the possibility that India will ally with Japan and Vietnam to contain China after Modi becomes the prime minister". "In fact, it has been a policy for India to offset the negative effects of China's rise by enhancing strategic cooperation with countries around China. It's unlikely that Modi will change this policy. However, it doesn't mean he will strengthen the trend," says Liu Zongyi, a strategic analyst from the state-run Shanghai Institute for International Studies. The article says the Bharatiya Janata Party manifesto promises a multilateral diplomacy and the establishment of "a web of allies" to further India's best national interests, "which steers away from a tilt toward the US held by India in diplomacy in the past decades. This has caused worries from the West". It says that while Western countries like the US hope to use India to counterbalance China, "but they don't support India on issues of the country's core interests. The US withdrawal from its super-loose monetary policy led to a sharp devaluation of the rupee and capital flight from India and the US-designed Trans- Pacific Partnership excludes India. "Therefore, India has strengthened coordination with emerging countries such as China and Russia over a spectrum of global issues. "India in the future will chase more strategic independence. The West has adapted to an India with a weak central government in the past decades. It is afraid that a strongman like Russian President Vladimir Putin will make India really strong and build the country into a challenger to the West economically and politically. The US is particularly upset with the enhanced strategic cooperation among China, Russia and India," the article says. "The extreme nationalist stand of the BJP has changed. Modi as a prime minister will face different tasks from when he was merely a politician. Modi in the past used some stained political means to seek the support within the party. But if he assumes the prime ministerial post, he will be confronted with bigger challenges than local politics." The author says that the BJP will have to "organise the government with coalition partners.

India needs a practical and business background leader much more than the politicians from Nehru’s Congress party, who are a bunch of socialists.

“Maybe this is the end of Indo US honeymoon period.”

Trust me, that was over when US authorities strip-searched a female Indian diplomat.

Well it certainly is bringing a lot of words together into a single paragraph.

That's a start.

I think you have to date it back to Bengal Bay massacre in 1970s. Diplomat story has actually assured skeptics that there won’t be any progress in near future.

Modi in power will bring death to Christians and Muslims in India.

In fact, last month when I was over there, one senior official in Modi’s BJP party said that if Modi wins, anyone who is not a Hindu should get out and go to Pakistan and get out of India.

Modi’s party is also responsible for mass attacks on Christians.

Modi may have some benefits as a Capitalist, but he is a radical Hindu who seeks to ensure only Hinduism exists inside his country. The Christian brethren there are terrified what will happen to them should he win this election.

You sound like the NYT/WaPo. Modi has been CM of Gujarat State for 13 years now. Except for the 2002 riots, for which he has been exonerated by a Special Supreme court team, there has been unprecedented peace in the state, which used to see 2-3 major and 2 dozen minor riots every year. He gets a third of the Muslim vote in Gujarat.

The idiot who said that anti-Modi people should leave for Pakistan was making an election speech. The rhetoric got away with him. He will soon be put in his place as Modi knows that people have voted for him for one reason only - getting the economy moving, That he is competent enough for and he will make it his priority.

The BJP has NOT been responsible for mass attacks on Christians. Do not deliberately mix up the VHP with the BJP for cheap points. That is what the lamestream media and libs do.

The only thing that will prolly happen to Christians is what will happen to everyone else to - a reduction in handouts and incentives to stop whining and start working. I do not think that will terrify most of them.

I am as far from anything the NYT or WaPo would ever print.

The congregations I serve out there have a very different opinion of Modi and his ultra-nationalist party than you do.

In fact, several beatings of pastors in the area I serve were committed by those in the BJP party - and one fellow who is a local caste leader in one of the villages is also a member and causes quite the problem for the brethren whenever he can.

While politics in India is more insane than here in this country - I do not think that different congregations in areas separated by several hours driving time expressing the same fears are without merit. Some of them have suffered at the hand of BJP party members riling up a mob against them.

As to the party official who warned Muslims and Christians to get out of India, if he was playing to the crowd for election points, what does that say about the mobs that would like nothing more than for Modi to act on such rhetoric?

There is fear of Modi among Muslims and Christians in areas of India for a reason, and its not due to taking EBT cards away and making people work for a living.
