May 11, 2014, 11:28 am Rogers: Obama can't base policy on 'what's trending on Twitter'

By Cameron Joseph

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) criticized the Obama administration for not paying enough attention to Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram before they abducted hundreds of girls.

"This was a problem in 2010 when Boko Haram said they wanted to be a part of Al Qaeda. That's when the problem started," Rogers said, referring to the State Department's decision not to classify Boko Haram as a terrorist group.

"You can't base your policy on what's trending on twitter. It has to be more than hashtags and selfies. This is a huge and growing problem that's really been relatively ignored," he said. "This is going to continue to happen unless we have a robust, holistic approach to what is radicalism and extremism popping up around the world."

Republicans have accused President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of not paying enough attention to growing radical Islamist movements in Africa.

The abduction of the Nigerian girls has drawn international attention and created lots of social media buzz in the past week, with the hashtag #bringbackourgirls trending strongly on Twitter.

Rogers was also critical of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki, saying he needed to present a plan for fixing the VA after a recent scandal in which ailing military veterans were reportedly kept on secret wait-lists to make it appear like they were getting medical care faster than they were.

"He's had five years to fix this problem. Five years. And what I found most disturbing about this is that when the Veterans Affairs committee was trying to get him up, it took a subpoena to get him up to answer questions. That's a huge problem," he said. "We have to get this right and if he can't come up to Congress and say 'here's exactly how I'm going to fix it,' then he needs to move along."

Why not??

That is what the U.S. Media now bases what they cover as “News” on.

And the millions of bot-controlled fake twitter accounts are easy to control by certain orgs. It’s called “opinion engineering”.

VA head....Shinseki should resign immediately or be fired. Obama will do nothing!!! He hates the USA military!!! Actually Obama is the guilty party.....he should be forced to resign by his Democrat Party or, they should impeach him for issuing death sentances to ailing military veterans for lack of prompt medical treatment!!!

Hmmm...better to base it on America’s whims than his own. Either way, he wins and weakens America exactly as he intended, and neither the Congress or Judiciary are willing to oppose him.

Keep up the pressure on our legislators and start directly lobbying big business. We have seen how less than 2% can control big business with threats of boycotts and bad press. The 40% needs to speak up to both business and government.

Yeah, former President Clinton ran his entire administration, all policies foreign and domestic, basically off of whatever was popular at the time.

Not surprised bammy is doing the same thing (with updated technology). bammy wouldn't know an original idea if it bit him in the backside.

Shinseki has two things going for him that may make his job safe: he’s Japanese-American, and he publicly disagreed with Bush over Iraq.
