There is a phrase that floats around college campuses, Princeton being no exception, that threatens to strike down opinions without regard for their merits, but rather solely on the basis of the person that voiced them. Check your privilege, the saying goes, and I have been reprimanded by it several times this year. The phrase, handed down by my moral superiors, descends recklessly, like an Obama-sanctioned drone, and aims laser-like at my pinkish-peach complexion, my maleness, and the nerve I displayed in offering an opinion rooted in a personal Weltanschauung. Check your privilege, they tell me in a command that teeters between an imposition to actually explore how I got where I am, and a reminder that I ought to feel personally apologetic because white males seem to pull most of the strings in the world.

I think I would have to respond with, “and you need to watch your affirmative action status.”
“Long and rock hard as always.”
That’s pretty funny. People who have been given everything and havent even earned their place at an Ivy league university lecturing those who earned everything about “privilege”.
Second that. For crying out loud, fight back. Use their own words, if you must: "why do you hate me?...I do not want to be judged by the color of my skin, anymore...
Whatever you do in such instances, make the perpetrators feel the heat.
Just another permutation of the race card. Nothing good can come of this (but I eagerly await witnessing some of the bad ;’)
So, I have to “check my privilege,” but you have the privilege of shutting me up because you don’t like what I have to say?
So, who’s “privileged” here?
I’ve already checked mine, by instructing the Bureau of White Privilege to stop sending me those monthly checks.
Who is John Galt?
LOL! Why, yes, Lovey. Kinda john f’n kohn-heinz-kerry-esque. Smug pompous assclowns.
- Be born to a working class family
- Serve his country in WW2
- Get a job as a mechanic
- Build our house with his own two hands (it took two years)
- Work his mechanic job for 38 years while also working part-time in carpentry, small engine repair and as a meter reader.
He never asked for anything. Everything he has, he earned by the bend of his back and the sweat of his brow.
He he says, " Everybody talks about their rights. They have the same rights as me - to bust my ass my whole life."
Screw these worthless pigs. They couldn't carry my father's jockstrap.
Check my privilege? How about checking your obamacare since I’m about to stomp a mudhole in you and walk it dry. I have had it with these pathetic twerps, man.
Am I the only one who finds this article incredibly self-righeous and insufferable?
The writer congratulates himself that he’s speaking truth to power when in fact, he’s been tricked into playing their game by their rules. He can’t be privileged... because... (wait for it...) HE’S A VICTIM, TOO! HA HA! Check and mate.
But it doesn’t wash. His descent from people who fled terror and oppression and struggled to gain a foothold in this country has nothing, but NOTHING, to do with him. Their past struggles don’t make him a victim, and he shouldn’t try so hard to cash in on it.
He’s no worse than people who descended from the Mayflower... that’s what we’ve always believed in America... but when did we all decide that landing here in a leaky rowboat made you BETTER? THAT’S the “new privilege” — the huddled masses are victims and are therefore entitled to relief.
That’s the new privilege and the author is dying to grab his share, while at the same time insisting that he’s not interested, nope, not him. He’s all about merit.
And it’s really disingenuous to argue that he’s all about earned merit when that Princeton degree will forever magically open doors closed forever to poor white rural graduates of Georgia State.
Congrats on getting your degree from Princeton. Now, shut it. You’re not a victim.
Like I said. If there is such a thing as white privlege, then why are there any homeless white people who won’t/can’t find jobs? Just wonderin’. :>}
“Yeah, Mr. Affirmative Action Hire...I got yer ‘privilege’ hangin’ right heah, little pal. Come get it, Twinkie. Heh, heh...heh, heh...”
Yeah, but I’d bet you’ll still get random strangers coming up and giving you stuff just because you’re white. While I find that a bit embarrassing, it happens to me all the time. :=)
