UKRAINE: As east Ukrainians vote in referendum, poll shows opposition to secession

In a Pew survey, more than two-thirds of people in eastern Ukraine seek to remain in Ukraine.

Many people were skeptical when Russian President Vladimir Putin called for separatists in eastern Ukraine to postpone a referendum on joining the Russian Federation. Either way, the leaders of the pro-Russian faction are holding the plebiscite Sunday all the same. They may be disappointed: In a survey by the U.S.-based Pew Research Center, 70 percent of respondents in eastern Ukraine sought to remain in Ukraine.

Leaving aside the West’s suspicions about a vote taking place under the Kremlin’s watchful eye, Ukraine’s military operations in the east and the clashes in the region’s cities don’t enhance the referendum’s credibility.

May I ask how Pew is able to poll seemingly anywhere? Isn’t this place kind of a warzone right now? Did they do polls in Baghdad during the Iraq war?

I can imagine Abdul watching the American tanks roll by his house, then the phone rings...

“Hello?”
“Hi, we’re with Pew Research. How do you feel about the Iraq War?”

I noticed that you didn't ask how the votes get counted in Donetsk? As you say the place is a war zone.

You have to wonder with transparent ballot boxes, same as used in the Crimea, how many people felt coerced to vote a certain way.

They don’t. The outcome it likely pre-determined.

Also who counted the vote?

Who were the pro Ukrainian poll watchers? (I doubt there were any)

How would a pro Ukrainian poll watcher not be intimidated?...when pro Ukrainians have been threatened, beat up, kidnapped, shot and killed over the last few weeks in Donetsk.

All those legitimate questions yet we had poster questioning a poll?

In such an environment, neither vote nor poll is reliable, so Pew’s ‘research’ is no more useful than the outcome of the fraudulent election itself.

How can there be any assurance that votes are being counted honestly?

Russia’s Putin is having trouble taking what he wants from Ukraine, and BLM’s Feudal Lord Reid is having trouble taking what he wants from Nevada, New Mexico and TEXAS - - - - - .

Causes one to think, doesn’t it?

What is the World coming to if people here in 2014 STILL refuse to be shot like cattle? And yet we can send a rocket to the Moon - - - -. Sigh.

Ever been to Chicago?

As the great Democrat statesman William Marcy Tweed said,

"The ballots made no result, the counters made the result."

The result will be what Putin wants it to be. Just like the elections in the Soviet Union and the former Eastern Bloc Communist countries.

Likely predetermined? I would say undoubtedly predetermined.

“Likely predetermined? I would say undoubtedly predetermined.”

Several Western Journos noted today, in Tweets, that in informal straw polling they did in the lines waiting to vote, that nearly as many people were there to vote for independence, as there were to vote against the unelected Kiev government.

Half wanted to stay as part of Ukraine, but not under the “Criminals” in charge after the coup.

They also noted that the massacres of the last week played a huge part in deciding to even vote in the referendum.

Kiev couldn’t have made dumber moves, than they have in the last 10 days or so.

“How can there be any assurance that votes are being counted honestly?”

If Jimmy Carter puts his stamp of approval on it we will know it’s a sham for sure.

I agree.

That said, there have been polls over the years plus there was the original independence vote back in 1991.

For example 83% of the voters in Donetsk in '91 voted for an independent Ukraine.

My educated guess today in Donetsk is that somewhere between 25% and 40% would want to break away with a lesser amount wanting to become part of Russia. And that the pro Ukrainian majority of voters in Donetsk are being intimidated.

Same thing goes for Luhansk.

This is a thread about Ukraine.

Why are you diverting attention?

Everybody here (and their brother) knows about the problems in Chicago.

Very good point. I might add that just as Reid has unleashed the DOJ on the Bundy protesters, the Ukrainian nationalists are publicly intimidated and “disappeared”.
