Ukraine crisis: Eastern rebels claim 'self-rule' poll victory

Pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region have claimed a resounding victory in a "self-rule" referendum, saying 89% voted in favour.

In Luhansk, another eastern region, the results - also expected to show a strong backing - will be released soon.

BBC reporters at polling stations spoke of chaotic scenes, no voting booths in places and no electoral register.

Ukraine called the vote a "criminal farce" organised by Russia. The EU and US also said the polls were illegal.

Separatists claimed two people were killed by armed men loyal to Kiev in the city of Krasnoarmiisk.

But otherwise the voting passed off peacefully, the BBC's Richard Galpin in Donetsk reports.

Regardless of the illegality of the vote in Donetsk and Lugansk, as seen in the eyes of the West and Kiev, the landslide vote for state sovereignty there, strengthens the prospects Russia will recognize the new self rule authorities in these regions. And the massive turnout has already created a new reality.

The Putin ass kissers just ignore that fact.

Of course the Maidan fans overlook the fact all the organized terror has been initiated from Kiev not from Moscow.

Kiev did not want this vote to take place and it lost decisively. So much for the fairy tale eastern Ukrainians wanted to remain in a country ruled from Lvov and Ivano-Frankovsk.

If Russia recognizes the vote, it’s game over for Ukraine, as the IMF will “Renegotiate” the bailout.

Russia will go ahead with the South Stream Project, cutting off the Saudi’s Syria Turkey pipeline through Syria and Turkey to Europe.

"If Russia recognizes the vote, it’s game over for Ukraine"

Opinions are like a**holes, everybody has one so my opinion is no better than any other.

That said, after watching Putin during this mess I don't think he'll recognize it outright. Now, the Russian Parliament may as that could make Putin's next chess move look even more Statesmanlike. I have a hunch Putin won't recognize the vote as such, but will say the referendum is grounds to have someone like the OSCE go in and hold elections they set up, can vouch for, and can vouch for the results.

This puts the ball in the EU court and makes them look like the ones who are being unreasonable. It would require stability that Kiev clearly cannot provide and it would make Putin look like he's trying to calm the waters exactly the way the EU has been asking him to.

Just a thought.

Of course this is as meaningless a vote as if the Hispanics in San Jose voted to join AZTLAN or Mexico.

Actually, more meaningless as nobody recognizes this illegal vote made under the guns of Russian thugs.

Its actually the other way around. But of course the validity of the vote is not the issue. It took place and has consequences.

Elections always do.

The consequences are that the entire world knows it is bogus.

It has the credibility of a high school student council vote. Actually less credibility than that, when you think about it.

Putin is taking his time—he will scoop up the Land Bridge to Criema with out firing a shot. The Duma will do his dirty work for him, The Kiev Government will help him by going violent. Putin can wait before the tanks roll, and the EMF planes blank Ukraine off the Grid. Russia could use some more Coal Mines and tax payers. He is playing this close to the vest—and we are going balistic and not thinking things out. He’s still playing chess with us. We are playing tiddly-winks.

I can only agree in the short term and give Puti Poot credit for playing checkers.

I don’t think he knows what a chess board looks like and in the long term this will drive the rest of the European nations strongly away from Russia, into the West’s orbit.

So what will Russia gain? Naval Yards? Already had them. A land-bridge? Outdated thinking. Those ships are sitting ducks in modern warfare.

But what do Russians lose? Much. Credibility...they can’t be trusted. And the Russian sphere is tenuous at best, ripe for subversion when the West chooses. Russians will have to invest money and energy into running Ukraine. For what? To technically possess it. They already had it.

Ha ha. Take that you EU Nazis. I can’t believe FReepers are supporting a dictatorship and not a popular elected government.

"Credibility...they can’t be trusted."

Russia has lost far less credibility than the US has.

All of Europe now knows the US will recognize a mob installed government in Europe the same way they recognized the Muslim Brotherhood mob installed government in Egypt rather than standing by the legally elected government until regularly scheduled legal elections take place.

That means a whole lot of European countries are now a lot more worried about a US supported mob taking over in their own country than they are about whether or not Putin takes more than Crimea.

Putin and Russia, OTOH, can't lose credibility and trust they never had to begin with. When all is said and done, then, the best case result is US and Russia will both be considered as equally untrustworthy.

Before this is finished, though, as facts begin to break through the ad hominems and chants of support for King Barry's love of mob rule, Europe will have to weigh the US being behind an illegal siezure of the governent of an entire nation as opposed to Russia seizing a portion of a nation. A portion that was Russian as recently as 1953 and is to this day populated by people Ukrainians themselves call, "ethnic Russians" who speak the Russian language the coup in Kiev has outlawed.

People who believe Europe prefers accepting the risk of the former to the risk of the later are deluding themselves.

“Russia has lost far less credibility than the US has.”

You have really left the realm of reality.

Europe sees this land grab for sovereign land for exactly what it is.

If of course you ignore reality like the LGM Ripusdian special forces that have been all over Ukraine.

Yeah. Another Soviet style “ election”.
And to top it off, the Tovarishe have declared the “ Donets Peoples Republic”.

And alleged “conservatives” cheer this bullshit on.

"Europe sees this land grab for sovereign land for exactly what it is."

They recognize that Russia is doing exactly what the majority of them have done for centuries, that much is true. Seeing it as a land grab is total BS.

Russia doesn't care that much one way or the other about the actual added territory and is well on the way to getting what it does want which is Kiev thieves out of their arrangements with industry in those areas.

The election does not matter at all. All that matters is which side will kill more of the other side. Ukrainians are just like Russians. They will not let anybody come into their country and push them around any more than the Russians would.
