The prohibition on transgender individuals serving in the U.S. military "continually should be reviewed," Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said on Sunday.
Hagel did not indicate whether he believes the policy should be overturned. However, he said "every qualified American who wants to serve our country should have an opportunity if they fit the qualifications and can do it."
A transgender individual is someone who has acquired the physical characteristics of the opposite sex or presents themselves in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth.
A panel convened by a think tank at San Francisco State University recently estimated that about 15,450 transgender personnel serve in the military and in the National Guard and Reserve.
In 2010, Congress passed legislation allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly. Hagel said the issue of transgender people serving in the military is more complicated. He said "these issues require medical attention" that at times cannot be provided in austere locations.

They are not even debating how to get transgenders in, only how soon. Can you imagine the psychological mess these people are in already before they have access to weapons?
I’ve always wondered... if sexual orientation is considered immutable and therefore cannot be discriminated against, why the specific prohibition against Pedophilia? Isn’t that a sexual orientation too?

When I joined the Navy, it was against the UCMJ to be gay and punishable with a dishonorable discharge. After a few years it was ok to be gay but you had to be quiet about it, and now this BS!
Thank God I retired before it becomes mandatory!
Right.
Take people with a hormone dependency and put them in an environment requiring self-sufficiency.
Take people with the state of mind to ellectively receive serious self-mutilation, and then give them control of our deadliest weapons, and expect them to have the perspective of when/when not to use that deadly force.
Take people with significant psycological issues (likely to include problems with authority figures like parents) and expect them to obey unpopular orders.

Transgenders being accepted in society is EXTREMELY NEW. Therefore these people went through a lot in their short lives. I personally know one and know of two more, who CHANGED BACK to their original genders.
There needs to be an admissions psych eval to delve deeply into all applicants’ stability, and it needs to be stealthy regarding gender. Obvious gender identity questions would be ruled homophobic. Rather, get to the point of the matter for the military: an oral and a written eval both with multi questions re how one feels about him or herself.
Hard to do because 95% of psychologists are libs. Hopefully military psychs will overcome political correctness and focus on screening out people who are that insecure about themselves in basic ways.
Remember once upon a time how they only wanted their own section in a restaurant? Now it is practically a criminal act to smoke even in your own house (unless it is pot).

I see two sides to this. While not common, there are birth defects where someone has external genitalia that do not match their internal genitalia; as well as true hermaphrodites; as well as those with incorrect prenatal brain gender determination.
The latter group are particularly difficult, as they evidence the wrong gender even before puberty, and experience severe stress because of it. Even Saudi Arabia recognizes the need for gender reassignment in some cases like this.
But these are all gender assignment or reassignment in children. By the time they are old enough to join the military they have a determined gender.
However, adults who become transgender are almost always very mentally unbalanced, like Private Manning. As such, it is not the transgenderism that is their problem, but their overall psychological profile. To be so mentally unhinged that in adulthood you change your gender almost guarantees that you are not suitable for military service.
People who are that screwed-up in the head have about as much business in the military as Chuck Hagel has being defense secretary.
Soon to be a quota for transgendered generals.
