Hungarian PM Orbán demands autonomy for Hungarians in Ukraine

Orbán, who was formally endorsed by Parliament as Prime Minister for a second consecutive term after a landslide election win in April, said on Saturday that ethnic Hungarians living in western Ukraine "must be granted dual citizenship, must enjoy all of the community rights and must be granted the opportunity for autonomy."

He said these people were entitled to Hungarian citizenship and also the right to self-administration.

"This is our clear expectation from the new Ukraine which is taking shape now," Reuters cited the PM as saying.

Ukrainian troops are battling pro-Russian rebels who are trying to wrest control of the country's easternmost provinces, which held two disputed referendums on Sunday that separatists said backed independence. Unlike the Russian sympathizers who want to break away from Ukraine, Hungary is urging autonomy for its ethnic kin living in countries in the Carpathian basin, Bloomberg reported.

Hungary has a population of 10 million and an additional 2.5 million Hungarians live beyond the country's borders in neighboring states. They are descendants of Hungarians who lost their citizenship in 1920, when the country lost two-thirds of its territory under the Trianon peace treaty signed in France at the end of World War I.

The PM said Hungary was and remained, beyond doubt, part of NATO and also the EU and his government regarded any programme that called for an exit from the EU a dangerous extremity.

"But we are members of these alliances and not hostages," Reuters cited him as saying. "We want a Europe that respects its own roots, respects Christianity and also gives due respect to individual nations."

"We do not want policies that support immigration and masses of immigrants who cause unmanageable tensions, but we want support for families to have more children," he reiterated an earlier remark of his.

Looks like the Europeans are regressing to their old behavior of constantly fighting with each other.

Wha???? Has this been reported anywhere else? There are other large ethnic groups in Ukraine where similar claims could be made.

Regression towards the mean :-)

All of this is due to the utter lack of US leadership-- despite all the European "Union" twaddle, Europe is still made up of sovereign states whose political parties normally rush towards the most politically opportunistic position as quickly as possible unless the US offers some firm alternative.

By "firm" I mean we also punish allies who don't toe the line, for example, if the City of London is so concerned about losing Russian money, let them get a whiff about restrictions on American depository receipts or the ability of US banks to trade on the London exchanges. Ditto for Frankfurt, and so on.

This upcoming tour will be “Barbarossa II”; are these Hungarians in the Ukraine remnants/descendants of the “liberators” of 1941?

dangerous precedence — the Romanians have a large Hungarian (Szekely) population right in the middle of the country, hundreds of km from Hungary.

Not good for Slovakia as well.....Many Hungarians believe Slovakia shouldn’t even be a country.
