Guardian’s Suzanne Goldenberg jumps the shark again – gets called out by NYT (Antarctic "collapse")
Watts Up with That ^ | May 12, 2014 | By Anthony Watts

Posted on 05/13/2014 2:36:08 PM PDT by Brad from Tennessee

The wailing today is that the collapse of the Antarctic ice sheet has already begun. . .

Story at link uses mixed media so it is hard to transfer text. Going to the link is worth the trouble. Watts documents how melting glaciers in the Antarctic, a geologic event first reported in 1909, are being hyped to coincide with Obama's global warming scare tactics.

Good. The damage is done. Now the carbon alarmists can shut up and sit down.

They are "very concerned" about ice melting in western Antarctica. Below is a map of Antarctic volcanoes. Notice anything about it?

The vast majority of Antarctic “glacier” is actually an ice pack covering open ocean.

Melting of ocean ice does not cause a proportional increase in the level of the oceans even if all of the ice melted completely in pretty much the same way the level of your Coke in a glass does not increase when the ice floating in the glass melts

A very substantial percentage of the Antarctic ice pack could melt with minimal change in ocean level

The graphic says it all. From time to time the warmists point to this region as an area where Antarctic ice is melting. Then some scientist will chime in reminding them of this chain of volcanoes.

I don’t know for sure, but I imagine if you start at the Greenwich Meridian and start walking counterclockwise around the pole, you’ll be in Western Antarctica for a good bit.

Hate to seem like a smartass, but are you aware that not one person in 10,000 can tell you when viewing your map, which way is "north." or why?

At the South pole, every direction viewed is "north..."

My guess is “western Antarctica” is the part of Antarctica in the western hemisphere, and I can only assume that the given map is aligned with the western hemisphere on the west side, but unless you know the continental features that lie on the western side (I think the large peninsula does) you would need cartographic lines and labels to know for sure.

Mt. Siple — a reminder of perhaps the greatest Eagle Scout and polar scientist of the 20th century:

Helped build Little America, invented wind chill factor, and helped save the U.S. Army in Korea. I wonder what he’d think of all of this.

By convention West Antarctica is the part of Antarctica which is in the western hemisphere, i.e. the half of the world where the Americas are.

Good point!

It's ALL north!!!!

Where on Earth, would a person be, if they walked 1 mile north; turned right and walked 1 mile east, and then turned right again and walked 1 mile south; ending up exactly where they started??

We refer to the Orient as the Far East.

Could it not also be called the Far West?

"The vast majority of Antarctic "glacier" is actually an ice pack covering an open ocean."

Nope.

While some lazy "jernalysts" may refer to them incorrectly, most (not all) articles do correctly identify glaciers. Much of the intermingling of terms occurs in the discussion/argument phase after a report is issued.

Ocean/pack ice is saltwater, melting has little effect on water levels. Glaciers are freshwater over land, melting does effect water levels.
