U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz will visit Ukraine later this month to meet with the embattled nation’s political leaders in the midst of violent confrontations with pro-Russian separatists, a spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday.
The trip is certain to raise the Texas Republican’s profile at a time when he’s been widely speculated to be a 2016 White House contender.The trip is sponsored by Secure America Now, a conservative non-profit group that says it is “dedicated to mobilizing millions of national security activists to support policies that protect our nation against terrorist infiltration, attack and capitulation to enemies.”
Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said no taxpayer dollars will be used on the trip.
Cruz told The Associated Press earlier Tuesday that he’ll meet with political, military, business in Ukraine and other countries in Eastern Europe. Israel is also on the itinerary. Ukraine’s new leaders, who ousted a pro-Russian president, have scheduled a May 25 presidential vote.
“Ukraine right now is facing an enormous threat from a resurgent Russia. (Russian President) Vladimir Putin has been quite naked about his desire to reconstitute as much as possible the old Soviet Union,” Cruz told the Associated Press. “I have a particular responsibility to assess firsthand the current and future military threats that could jeopardize our safety and the security of our allies.”
Cruz has previously called for the Obama administration to reconsider a “Star Wars” type anti-ballistic missile system to counter Russia. He’s also pushed for U.S. exports of liquefied natural gas to reduce Ukraine’s dependence on Russia.

I assure you, the is clearly a minority opinion and would never pass as a resolution in the US Congress.
I doubt anyone would bring a war resolution to the floor as it would receive little more than passing ridicule.
So why make the promise? It's BS. The USA would not, under any foreseeable circumstance, risk existential war to defend Ukraine. Or Georgia. Or even a couple of the existing members of NATO.
It's delusional to think otherwise.

Why not? The sons, as you speak of, have already committed to defend freedom. Russia is a threat to freedom. Not as big a threat as the old Soviet Union, but a threat none the less!
Perfect example of why we have lost. No shortage of those who will find reason to trash the best we have to offer and to miss the significance of how bad the Left really is compared to even our worst offerings.

Same goes for eligibility to hold the office of the president. If you're a guy with a D next to your name, you better be able to prove you were born here. But if you have an R next to your name (especially if you live in Texas!) it's fine if you were born anyplace on the planet.

FDR shook hands with Stalin and called him Uncle Joe. He seemed to do all right. Nixon shook hands with Mao and had China's UN seat given to Communist China in order to peel it away from Communist Russia. Nixon suffered no negative political consequences from this. That's probably because unlike Stalin and Mao, Ukraine's neo-Nazis aren't actually responsible for the deaths of tens of millions.
China will occupy Russia up to the Ural Mountains. If Europeans are too legalistic to overrun European Russia, Turkey and the Central Asian stans probably have zero qualms. What remains after an all-out nuclear war may have Russian genes, but will probably speak either a Turkic language or Mandarin Chinese.
