(WBNG Binghamton) As the heroin epidemic rolls on, the drug is appearing in some unlikely places including schools and jails. Kellie Musa helped found Dreams Over Drugs, a non-profit to provide help to students understand addiction, and works with two other former addicts to warn other students of her past.
"My morals became broken, my self-confidence became broken, and all the morals my parents instilled in me were no longer strong," Musa told a class of students at Union-Endicott High School.
She had hard truths about her addiction for her old alma mater. "I would steal from my family, I would steal from my friends," Musa said. "I would use and abuse anyone that meant anything to me." Decisions that led her to jail five times.
A place where instead of getting clean, some addicts find ways to sneak in drugs.
In Broome County's correctional facility, arrests for heroin in the jails more than tripled from three in 2012 to 10 in 2013. All other drug possessions saw increases between 2012 and 2013. Broome County Sheriff David Harder said sneaking in contraband is common, but not rampant.
"Somebody might be able to get a cigarette lighter through their rectum," Harder said, "Those things go on all the time." The sheriff said the increase in arrests does not mean there's more abuse.
"You're seeing more of it on paper because the officers are being more alert," Harder said, "And taking more action against the people coming in."
President of Dreams Over Drugs, Michael John-Barton said it's important to reach children now before they start a habit. He calls children growing up now 'Generation H,' a generation flooded by temptation for heroin and other opioids.
He said there challenge is why he helped organize the group. "It came out of seeing so many kids die and seeing so many families hurt by this problem," John-Barton said.
The addicts hope their tales will leave an impression. "It could be six months down the road or a year down the road when they all of a sudden realize, 'Wow, all the stuff that guy said would happen, is happening,'" John Barton said.
A hope he can keep students after him away from addiction, and potentially, a life behind bars.
These stories are happening all over the country. This crap wasn’t around when I was growing up in Miami in the 80’s and 90’s. there was cocaine, and I know what a war on drugs looks like and this ain’t it.
There is no war on drugs today. It is all a farce. They should start with why the DEA is MIA in preventing this crap from getting into the country. This level of trafficking would not happen without government complicity. Heroin isn’t grown here. The SEC sees no evil while Wall Street banks launder $BILLIONS in cartel money.

Curious…big H addictions in blue states like Oregon and Vermont—a rural drug now, like meth! And it’s mostly white kids who go for it.
Heroin is prescribed in pill form by doctors to children. It is available in lollipop form.

Most people don’t know that opiate deaths have surpassed alcohol and car accidents in accidental deaths! We are living a level of deception that is beyond most people’s comprehension. Take care of your families!
You want to stop it? If you are really serious about making a dent, we need to do what Singapore does, death penalty for dealers.
They’re bad about it and they don’t care.
And so they don’t sell drugs — now, souls is another question.

I’m sure that if Americans were simply informed of all the dangers, parents could deal with it accordingly. Most parents who have lost children had no idea what was going on until it was too late.
The Federal government is covering up because they’re guilty. They could certainly work towards preventing this from getting in.
Don’t forget “gangwalker”, which was about arming street gangs (distribution network which has cartel ties).
No one in their right mind does, but take a bored kid, add some some peer pressure, get them high on something else that affects their judgement (a joint or a few beer), and add one opportunist pusher, and it is a recipe for trouble.
Works for me! Just catch them in the act.
“Because we’re badass” is not a reason to embrace virtue.
It is a broader spiritual mindset.
Through extreme worldly pressure one can reshape sin (I imagine the private drunkenness rate in Singapore leaves American sin cities in the dust) but cannot eliminate it.
People once rarely abused chemicals that are now guarded jealously, at a time when a trip on them (i.e. non medical use) would be viewed as a visit from Satan. Now the reaction is more like “Cool! Satan!” And absolutely NOTHING from the world can do anything about this underlying urge. Absolutely NOTHING.
You are correct. To defeat addiction requires spiritual freedom from it as well. No God, no power, Know God, Know power.
And Christians should preach, but with a heart.
We’re not preaching to folks, “hey you’re headed to hell” because we feel so super about it. Some do put on that attitude and it’s an abomination. It distances people from God. We’re here to tell the world it has gotten itself in trouble by choice and that God is extending another choice, this time to be gotten back out of trouble.
And addictions take a lot of forms other than drugs. Addiction is basically world-boundness. In fact it may be an ironic mercy to particular persons that it shows up in the form of something like a drug addiction or a sex mania, because then the situation demands attention. This is in the spirit of how Jesus warned Pharisees that drunkards and prostitutes were coming into the kingdom of heaven before they, the proud “normals,” were.
So if someone is headed to Hell and we warn them about it, they might decide to go to Hell?
I don’t see the problem here.
